The most reliable way into an entry-level game job is to choose one role family, create work that demonstrates the skills in current listings, and search several hiring channels at the same time. Use studio career pages, the IGDA Career Center, professional Discord channels, local chapters and discipline groups; then tailor each application to the vacancy. Projects, mods, game jams, open-source contributions, internships, mentorship and portfolio reviews can provide evidence when paid experience is scarce. A degree may help for some vacancies, but neither the available employer research nor current career guidance supports treating a particular degree as universally required. QA can be a valid target, but it is not a guaranteed shortcut into development.
What the entry-level game-job market actually looks like
Entry-level hiring is competitive. The IGDA’s 2023 Hireability Gaps report describes employers seeing more entry-level talent than available roles and emphasizes that practical experience and strong portfolios often distinguish candidates. Its observation is qualitative, not a current count of vacancies, and it should not be treated as a live measurement of the 2026 market. The report also notes that hands-on opportunities can be concentrated at larger or better-resourced companies, so an effective search cannot depend on internships at major studios alone.
Read every listing as its own set of requirements. Some employers use a degree as a signal of interest or a screening requirement; others say a degree is optional when a candidate can learn the tools independently and show a strong portfolio. An anonymous interviewee quoted in the IGDA report put the latter view this way: “higher education degree is optional for most if not all of our jobs. If you are able to learn tools by yourself and you have a strong portfolio to back it up, we will certainly consider you even if you don’t have higher education.” That is one employer perspective, not a promise that every studio hires on the same basis.
The University of Chicago Career Advancement 2025–26 guide illustrates the breadth of the field: programming, design, marketing, sound, user experience, art and business all have game-industry paths. It reports that over 75% of UChicago students interested in gaming participate in an experiential program to build portfolios during college. That figure describes one campus population, not all aspiring game workers, but it shows why visible work matters.

Choose a role family before you search
“I want to work in games” is too broad for a resume, portfolio or search alert. Start by comparing the work you would do every week, the evidence employers can inspect and the tools named in listings. The IGDA Entry-Level Skills Hub, dated April 26, 2024, is a useful starting framework; validate it against current employer descriptions because tools and expectations change.
| Role family | Entry-level evidence to build | Where to show it |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering and technical development | Small playable systems, clean code, debugging notes, version-control history and familiarity with the engine or language named in the vacancy | Repository, downloadable build, technical breakdown and concise readme |
| Game and level design | Design decisions, prototypes, level-flow iterations, playtest findings and ability to explain trade-offs | Playable prototype, annotated videos, maps and a short postmortem |
| Art and animation | Role-specific fundamentals such as modeling, texturing, concept work, rigging, animation or visual effects | Curated portfolio, turntables, process images and finished assets |
| Audio | Implemented sound, music or interactive audio, plus an understanding of how assets work in a game | Showreel, playable scene, implementation notes and credits |
| UX and UI | Research, information architecture, wireframes, interaction prototypes and usability reasoning | Case studies that show the problem, iterations, test observations and result |
| Production and project coordination | Planning, communication, risk tracking, scope decisions and evidence that a team shipped something | Team project overview, production artifacts and a retrospective |
| Quality assurance | Reproducible bug reports, test-case design, clear severity reasoning, regression checks and careful communication | Redacted sample reports, test plan, test matrix and an explanation of your process |
| Writing, narrative and localization | Dialogue, narrative structure, branching logic, editing or localization-quality work | Selected scripts, interactive sample and brief commentary on constraints |
| Marketing, community and business | Audience research, campaign or community work, analytics interpretation and reliable execution | Case studies, calendars, sample posts or campaign analyses with confidential details removed |
You do not need to commit permanently. Pick one primary target for the next search cycle and, if useful, one adjacent target that shares evidence. A programmer might also apply to tools or technical-design roles; a tester might target QA analyst, localization QA or support roles. Keep separate versions of your resume and portfolio so the connection is obvious.
Turn a job description into a practical checklist
Collect 10 to 15 current listings for the role you want. Do not copy every wish-list item into a course plan. Instead, mark each requirement as essential, frequent or occasional, then identify the smallest project that can demonstrate it.
- Extract the repeated skills. Record engines, languages, software, workflows, collaboration practices and domain knowledge that appear across listings.
- Separate proof from adjectives. “Passionate,” “team player” and “self-starter” are claims. A shipped prototype, clear bug report or documented iteration is evidence.
- Check the level. A posting that asks for several years of professional experience may still describe junior work, but apply only when your portfolio addresses the actual duties and the employer accepts early-career candidates.
- Build a gap list. Choose two or three missing capabilities for a focused project rather than trying to learn an entire discipline at once.
- Mirror the vocabulary honestly. Use the employer’s terms when they accurately describe your work; never claim production experience you do not have.
The IGDA Hub includes role-specific requirements, portfolio examples and interview guidance. Use it to understand what “ready” can look like, then let the listings determine which details matter for your target studios.

Build a portfolio that proves contribution
One finished, relevant sample is usually more useful than a large unfiltered gallery. Select work that lets a reviewer answer three questions quickly: What did you do? How did you do it? What changed because of your decisions?
Choose an achievable project
- Personal game or mod: Define a small feature or level, finish it, and publish a playable build or video. A mod can demonstrate that you understand an existing game’s tools and constraints.
- Game-jam contribution: Keep the team size, time limit and your exact responsibilities visible. Explain what you shipped under pressure and what you would change with more time.
- Open-source contribution: Link the issue, pull request or asset and explain review feedback, tests and merge status. Contributions need not be game-specific if they demonstrate the same technical or collaboration skill.
- Discipline exercise: A QA test plan, animation study, audio implementation or UX case study can be valuable when it matches the vacancy and is presented with professional care.
Document the work
For every featured item, include a one-sentence summary, your individual contribution, tools and constraints, the result, and links that a reviewer can open without special access. Include a short video when a build is difficult to run. Show iteration: screenshots, prototypes, playtest notes, bug histories or code decisions. Team credit is essential; claiming a group’s work as your own undermines trust.
Make the first screen useful
Put your target role, two or three strongest samples and contact information near the top. Remove unfinished experiments unless they demonstrate a skill the listing specifically requests. Check every link, provide accessible files and label mature or restricted content before a reviewer encounters it.

Studio career pages
Make a list of studios whose projects and locations fit you, then check their official career pages on a schedule. Search titles such as junior, associate, trainee, internship, graduate, QA, test, tools, support and community in addition to the word “game.” Smaller studios may advertise less consistently, so follow their official channels and attend events where they recruit.

IGDA Career Center and professional channels
The IGDA Career Center includes job postings, Discord job-opportunities and looking-for-work channels, chapter events, special-interest groups and mentorship. Use job channels for leads, not as a substitute for verifying the vacancy on the employer’s own page. A mentor or portfolio reviewer can help you identify unclear evidence, improve a resume and understand local hiring norms.
Local chapters and discipline groups
Chapters and special-interest groups can expose you to smaller teams, talks, game jams and peer feedback. Attend with a specific introduction: your target role, one project you made and the kind of advice or connection you are seeking. Follow up with a short message and a relevant link rather than a mass application.
Early-career programs
The IGDA Foundation’s 2026 Questline page describes early-career support and a cohort for international students and recent graduates. Eligibility, dates and places can change, so verify the current conditions directly before preparing an application. Treat this as one route among several, not as a replacement for applying to open roles.

A repeatable search workflow
- Set your target. Write one primary role, two or three proof skills and the locations or remote conditions you can accept.
- Create the evidence. Finish or substantially improve one relevant project. Ask a peer, mentor or chapter contact to review it.
- Build a source list. Add studio career pages, the IGDA Career Center, relevant Discord channels, local chapters, special-interest groups and eligible programs.
- Track vacancies. Record employer, role, closing date, location, eligibility, required skills, contact and application status in a spreadsheet.
- Tailor the application. Move the most relevant project to the top, use the listing’s accurate terminology and explain your contribution in concrete terms.
- Follow up once. If a listing gives a contact or timeline, use it. Otherwise avoid repeated messages; continue improving evidence and applying elsewhere.
- Review weekly. Note which requirements you repeatedly miss, which portfolio links receive questions and which channels produce legitimate interviews. Adjust the next project or application accordingly.
Prepare application materials for an early-career review
Resume
Keep the first page focused on the target role. Put relevant projects, shipped jam work, mods, open-source contributions, internships and measurable responsibilities above unrelated employment. For each item, state the action, tool or method and result: for example, “Designed and tested three tutorial layouts, incorporated playtest findings and documented the final flow.” Do not inflate a class assignment into commercial experience.

Portfolio and links
Use a stable page or document with working links and clear labels. A reviewer should not have to download an unknown file to understand your contribution. Include repositories only when they are organized enough to inspect, and provide a build or video for code that cannot be evaluated from a screen alone.
Cover letter or application questions
Answer the employer’s actual question. Connect one project to one responsibility in the listing, explain what you learned and identify the evidence link. A short, specific explanation is stronger than a generic declaration that you have always loved games.
Compare the main entry routes
| Route | Who can use it | What it can provide | Limitations to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior posted role | Applicants who meet the vacancy’s stated requirements | Direct evaluation for the target discipline and a possible paid position | Competition is high; each listing may define “junior” differently |
| Internship or graduate program | Usually students or recent graduates; verify each program | Structured feedback, team workflow and a clearer first professional reference | Places and eligibility are limited, and opportunities may cluster at larger employers |
| Game jam or personal project | Open to people willing to organize a small scope | Visible evidence, collaboration practice and a conversation starter | It is not automatically professional experience; document your role and finish quality |
| Mod or open-source work | People able to work within an existing project’s rules | Tool familiarity, review history and inspectable contributions | Access, permissions and maintainer timelines vary |
| Mentorship, chapter or special-interest group | Applicants who can join the relevant community | Feedback, contacts, event information and portfolio improvement | Networking does not guarantee a referral or a job |
| Adjacent role | Applicants whose skills transfer to support, tools, localization, community or other functions | Industry context and experience that may broaden later options | It may not lead to the discipline you ultimately want; keep building role-specific evidence |
Is QA a good way into game development?
QA is a legitimate entry target when you enjoy finding edge cases, reproducing failures and communicating precisely. Apply to QA, test, localization-QA and support vacancies that match your skills, and prepare evidence rather than relying on the idea that QA automatically leads to programming or design.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Show what a junior tester can do
- Write a concise bug title, environment, reproduction steps, expected result, actual result, severity and supporting media.
- Design a small test matrix covering platforms, save states, input methods or settings relevant to the sample.
- Explain how you would confirm a fix and run regression checks without retesting randomly.
- Demonstrate calm, unambiguous communication about a defect that another person can reproduce.
Use a personal prototype, mod or jam project as a test target, but disclose that it is your own sample. The available evidence does not establish QA as a guaranteed bridge to development, so continue building the programming, design or art portfolio required for the destination role while applying for testing work.

How to think about degrees and training
There is no universal answer. Follow the listing: some vacancies require a degree, some prefer one, and some explicitly accept demonstrated ability instead. Compare the tuition, time and access to feedback of a formal program with lower-cost practice through projects, jams, open-source work, mentorship and community events. A course is worthwhile when it produces strong work, useful critique and a network—not merely a credential.
If you are already enrolled, use campus resources, internships and experiential programs to ship work. If you are not, do not wait for a degree before testing your fit: build a small project, read listings and ask for portfolio feedback now. The IGDA report’s mixed employer views mean that “degree required” and “degree irrelevant” are both overbroad assumptions.
Prepare for interviews and work tests
Discuss your work precisely
For each portfolio item, rehearse the problem, your responsibility, the decision you made, the alternative you rejected, the result and what you would improve. Teams want to know how you receive feedback and work within constraints, not only whether the final screenshot looks polished.
Expect role-specific evaluation
- Engineering: Be ready to explain architecture, debugging, performance trade-offs and version-control choices in your sample.
- Design: Walk through goals, player assumptions, iteration and playtest evidence.
- Art, audio and UX: Explain process, constraints, implementation and how feedback changed the work.
- QA: Practice prioritizing defects, writing reproducible reports and describing a sensible regression pass.
- Production, marketing and community: Describe planning, stakeholder communication, audience reasoning and how you measured or reviewed outcomes.
Complete take-home tasks only when the scope and deadline are clear. Keep copies of your work, respect confidentiality and do not submit another person’s assets or code.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Applying to every discipline with one resume | The reviewer cannot see a fit | Create a primary role version and reorder evidence for each vacancy |
| Listing tools without proof | Software names do not show competence | Link a project and explain what you produced with the tool |
| Relying only on major-studio internships | Those opportunities are limited and concentrated | Use jams, mods, open source, small studios, chapters and adjacent roles |
| Assuming QA guarantees development work | Career transitions depend on later skills and vacancies | Build destination-role evidence while applying to QA |
| Treating a degree as mandatory or useless | Requirements vary by employer and vacancy | Follow each listing and compare the practical value of available training |
| Sending an unfinished portfolio | Broken links and unclear ownership create avoidable doubt | Test every link, label team contributions and remove irrelevant experiments |
| Ignoring location and eligibility | A strong application can fail on work authorization or attendance rules | Record location, remote policy, student status and deadlines before applying |
What to do if you have no experience
Replace “experience” with a sequence of credible evidence. In the next few weeks, select a small project, define your role, publish the result and ask for specific critique. Join a jam or contribute to an open-source project if collaboration is the missing proof. Add the finished item to a role-specific portfolio, then apply while starting the next improvement cycle. Employers may still reject an application, but this process gives you something concrete to discuss and a way to respond to recurring gaps.
Keep a record of applications, feedback and skill gaps. A rejection that mentions missing engine experience, weak bug reports or unclear ownership is actionable; use it to revise one artifact rather than rewriting your entire career plan. The goal is a growing body of inspectable work and a search process that reaches more than one hiring channel.
One practical starting plan
- Today: Choose one role family and save 10 current listings.
- This week: Extract repeated requirements, select a project and define its smallest finished version.
- During the project: Track your decisions, tests, iterations and individual contribution.
- When it is presentable: Publish the build, repository, video or case study; obtain a peer or mentor review.
- Each week: Check studio pages, IGDA channels, local chapters and relevant groups; apply only when your evidence addresses the vacancy.
- After each interview or rejection: Record the missing evidence and improve the next application or project.
This approach does not promise a fast hire. It makes your search specific, gives employers verifiable reasons to consider you and keeps progress possible even when entry-level openings are scarce.
