To find diesel prices and stations for a road trip, use a fuel finder that covers the countries on your route and explicitly supports the diesel grade your vehicle needs. Search the itinerary when the service offers route lookup; otherwise, check likely stop towns. Before choosing a station, verify the price timestamp, payment conditions, opening hours, amenities, and detour distance.
Choose a fuel finder that covers your route
Station-level coverage and route-search features vary by country and service. A national average is not a quote for a particular pump, and a nearby-station search is not necessarily a search along your whole driving corridor.
| Where you are driving | Useful starting point | What it supports | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | GasBuddy | GasBuddy’s Find Gas feature searches nearby prices in the app; its website accepts a city or ZIP/postal code. App results can be sorted by price, distance, or a combination and filtered by brand, rating, and amenities. | The cited instructions establish nearby search, not a guaranteed diesel search along an entire route. Check that the listing is for the required grade and note whether the price is cash/debit or credit. If a station seems missing, reset filters; they can hide results. |
| United Kingdom | Fuel Finder data through participating apps and websites | GOV.UK says participating services surface retail prices by fuel type, forecourt details, amenities, opening hours, and timestamps. Retailers must submit price changes within 30 minutes. | Check the timestamp and whether the app offers route search. The downloadable CSV is updated twice a day, so it is not refreshed as frequently as the reporting standard. |
| France | prix-carburants.gouv.fr | The official government site supports a route search with departure and arrival fields and lets you select Gazole (B7). It also offers location searches and station or service filters. | Confirm the listed fuel grade, station details, and price close to your departure. |
| United States | AAA fuel finder, calculator, and TripTik | AAA describes a fuel finder covering more than 100,000 stations, a road-trip fuel-cost calculator, and TripTik point-to-point planning. | The service description does not specify whether station results can be filtered to diesel. Verify the available fuel-grade controls before relying on it. |
Find stations along the route
- Confirm the required fuel. Check your vehicle’s manual or fuel-door label, then identify the countries or states on your itinerary. Fuel names and grades differ by market; for example, the French site labels diesel as Gazole (B7).
- Search the itinerary where supported. Enter the departure and destination in a service with explicit route search, such as the French government site. If your chosen tool only searches nearby, look up likely stop towns or areas near the route instead of assuming it covers the whole corridor.
- Compare the full stop, not just the displayed price. Check the fuel grade, timestamp, payment terms, opening hours, amenities you need, and distance from your route. A cheaper price may not be worthwhile if the detour is long or the station is closed when you arrive.
- Recheck before leaving the route. Open the station detail shortly before your stop. Listings can be stale, hidden by filters, or conditional on cash or debit payment.
- Keep a backup in mind. A fallback station is especially useful on remote stretches or when travelling late at night.
Read prices and timestamps carefully
In the UK, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Fuel Finder guidance, published February 2, 2026, says: “Prices are published within 30 minutes of any change.” That is the service’s reporting standard; check the timestamp shown by the app or website you actually use. The downloadable CSV is updated twice daily.
In the United States, some GasBuddy listings distinguish cash or debit prices from credit prices. Make sure the displayed amount applies to the payment method you plan to use. Its filters can also hide stations, so clear them if expected results do not appear.

- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Keep national figures separate from station listings. AAA’s fuel-price page labeled the U.S. national diesel average “highest recorded” at $6.2040 per gallon as of September 13, 2026. That dated national snapshot is not a current October 4 quote or a promise about the price at any particular station.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before you commit to a stop
- Coverage: Does the service cover the country and the section of route you are travelling?
- Fuel grade: Does the station sell the diesel grade your vehicle requires, rather than merely a different fuel type?
- Price freshness: Is there a timestamp, and how recent is it?
- Payment terms: Is the price tied to cash, debit, or another condition?
- Practical details: Are the address, opening hours, amenities, and route detour suitable for your stop?
For hands-free navigation while following the route, a car phone mount for navigation can keep the map visible; it does not find prices or confirm station details.
