Start with cruise lines’ official shipboard career pages, search by department and exact job title, and apply through the line or a recruiter it names as an authorized partner. Match openings to your existing skills and check each vacancy’s age, experience, medical, passport, visa, language, and certification requirements. You will live and work aboard a ship on a contract; the ship and itinerary are assigned according to operational needs, so travel is part of the job—not unrestricted vacation.
Where to find legitimate cruise ship openings
- Choose cruise lines and departments. Visit each line’s official careers website and open its shipboard, onboard, or jobs-at-sea section. Search by department and exact role title. Royal Caribbean, for example, lists opportunities across food and beverage, marine, hotel operations, entertainment and recreation, guest experience sales, and operations support. - Read the live vacancy carefully. Compare the duties and required credentials with your actual experience. Some entry-level roles accept relevant land-based experience, while technical and marine positions may require specific certificates or experience. Princess says cruise experience is not necessary for many roles, though some positions prefer it. Princess Cruises shipboard jobs
- Apply through a verified channel. Use the cruise line’s own application portal or a regional hiring partner explicitly listed on its website. A partner may source and pre-screen applicants, but the cruise line makes the hiring decision. Cruise-line or authorized-partner job fairs, including virtual events, can also be an option. - Prepare role-specific application materials. Carnival says its application asks for education and work experience and may request a résumé, cover letter, qualifications, certificates, and details of specific skills. Be ready to discuss relevant experience and demonstrate the English and communication skills the position requires. Carnival shipboard careers
- Follow written onboarding instructions. After an offer, the process may include a medical examination, visas and travel documents, background checks, and other steps determined by country or flag-state rules. Carnival says employment is confirmed only after onboarding and acceptance of a contract for the first assignment; an interview or provisional offer is not the same as confirmed employment.
Which cruise ship jobs may fit your experience?
Ships employ people across hospitality, technical, marine, entertainment, and business functions. Exact job titles and openings differ by line.
| Job family | Examples to search | Transferable experience to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Food and beverage | Cook, bartender, waiter, restaurant attendant | Restaurants, catering, culinary work, bar service, customer service |
| Hotel and guest services | Guest services, stateroom attendant, concierge, laundry, public-area attendant | Hotels, housekeeping, reception, concierge, guest relations |
| Marine, technical, and facilities | Deck, engine, electrical, facilities | Engineering, maintenance, maritime work, electrical trades |
| Entertainment and recreation | Musician, stage staff, youth staff, sound or lighting technician | Live performance, childcare or youth work, production, audio and lighting |
| Other onboard functions | Shore excursions, casino, photography, HR, IT, finance, medical operations | Relevant professional experience in the specific function |
Applying without cruise ship experience
Search by transferable skills as well as by cruise-specific titles: hospitality, customer service, cooking, maintenance, engineering, healthcare, entertainment, sales, and administration can all be relevant. Princess says many entry-level positions accept land-based experience. That is not a blanket rule: check whether the particular line and vacancy require previous shipboard work.

Some services onboard are operated by concessionaires rather than hired directly by the cruise line. Princess identifies casino, spa, art, fine jewelry, port shopping, and retail as concession-partner opportunities. Check requirements before applying or paying for training
There is no single set of entry rules for every cruise line, nationality, itinerary, or job family. For the exact vacancy, confirm:
- Age: Royal Caribbean lists 18 as its general minimum and 21 for beverage-serving roles; Princess lists 21 as its baseline. These are company-specific policies, not an industry-wide minimum.
- Experience and qualifications: Check required work history, job-specific certificates, licenses, and any technical or marine credentials.
- Travel documents: A valid passport is commonly needed. Depending on nationality and itinerary, you may also need a C1/D crew visa, Schengen visa, seafarer’s book, or other documents.
- Medical and background checks: Expect the employer to specify medical examination and clearance steps during hiring or onboarding.
- Language: Confirm the vacancy’s English-language and communication expectations.
- Safety training: Requirements vary. Princess says many hotel roles do not generally require a Seaman’s Book or STCW certification, while some deck and technical roles do. CLIA’s general onboard guidance includes STCW Basic Safety Training. Ask the hiring line what the precise role requires before buying a course; a study manual can help prepare but does not replace approved training or certification. CLIA careers information
Allow time for processing
Princess estimates that most candidates complete its process in a few weeks to a couple of months, but the timing varies. Carnival notes that onboarding and waiting for a ship assignment can add time. Do not make arrangements to join until the employer gives you precise instructions and confirms the assignment.

Spot recruitment scams and understand possible costs
Apply only through the cruise line’s careers page or a partner listed on that line’s official website. Princess and Royal Caribbean warn that they do not charge applicants to apply, interview, or secure employment. CLIA also warns against application, agency, processing, or unnecessary course and medical fees demanded by recruiters. Be wary of guaranteed-job promises, pressure to pay immediately, unsolicited requests for sensitive information, and email addresses or social accounts you cannot verify against the employer’s site. If a request seems suspicious, contact the company using details published on its official website. Princess Cruises hiring guidance Royal Caribbean shipboard careers
No recruitment fee does not mean there can never be costs associated with joining. Passports, seafarer documents, medicals, travel, certifications, and licenses may involve expenses. Royal Caribbean says some visa travel costs are reimbursed after joining, while visa service charges are not. Who pays for each item depends on the employer, position, nationality, and assignment; get the terms in writing before spending. Royal Caribbean shipboard careers

What traveling while working onboard actually means
You live and work on the vessel as it travels, but your job duties and contract shape what you can do. Royal Caribbean says assignments are made according to operational needs and it cannot guarantee a preferred ship or route. Princess says assignment depends on openings when a candidate is ready to travel. It also says a signed agreement generally means working through the scheduled disembarkation date; an early return is handled only in unusual or extenuating circumstances. Royal Caribbean shipboard careers Princess Cruises shipboard jobs
Before accepting, review the written terms for contract length and schedule, accommodation and meals, shore-leave rules, transportation, leave arrangements, and early-return terms. Do not assume you will be free to explore every port; your work schedule and the employer’s policies determine your time ashore.

Compare vacancies before choosing one
When several openings look plausible, compare the details side by side rather than choosing on itinerary alone.
