Use two separate federal databases: the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for campaign-finance records, and LDA.gov for federal lobbying disclosures. Search company and related entity names in each system, because neither portal captures every kind of political activity connected to a company.

Which database answers which question?

Database What to look for What it does not establish by itself
FEC campaign-finance data Federal campaign-finance records about how candidates and committees raise and spend money, including candidate, committee, contributor, filing, spending, and loan information. It is not a complete record of lobbying activity or all political activity connected to a company.
LDA.gov LD-1/LD-2 search LD-1 registrations and LD-2 quarterly lobbying activity reports, searchable by registrant, client, lobbyist, issue area, government entity contacted, affiliated organization, and foreign entity. A filing does not prove a policy outcome, lobbying effectiveness, or that lobbying caused a government decision.
LDA.gov LD-203 contributions search Separate lobbying-related contributions reports, with fields such as registrant, lobbyist, contribution date and amount, contribution type, contributor, payee, and honoree. LD-203 entries are not the same record set as FEC campaign contributions and should not be added to FEC totals as though they were equivalent.

The FEC describes its data as a way to help voters understand federal campaign fundraising and spending. LDA.gov provides access to lobbying registrations, quarterly activity reports, and contributions reports. The Senate Office of Public Records receives and maintains LDA records for public inspection, while the House Clerk describes quarterly activity and semiannual contributions reporting under the LDA framework. See the Senate Lobbying Disclosure page and the House Lobbying Disclosure page.

How to search for an AI company’s federal campaign-finance records

  1. Open the FEC campaign-finance data portal and choose the search or browse route that matches what you are trying to identify: a candidate, committee, contributor, filing, or spending record.
  2. Search the company’s exact name, then try relevant spelling variants and known related entity names. If the company has a political committee or PAC, search that committee’s name separately.
  3. Use the FEC’s candidate and committee profiles, individual-contributor search, and filing or spending views to inspect the record type rather than treating a name match as a single company-wide total.
  4. Record the exact name searched, record type, date range, and filters. Repeat the search for related names if you want a broader picture.

The FEC is an official starting point for federal campaign-finance records, but a company-affiliated individual’s donation, a committee’s activity, and a company’s own spending are distinct kinds of records. Keep them separate when describing results.

How to find federal lobbying registrations and activity

  1. Open the LD-1/LD-2 search to look for lobbying registrations and quarterly activity reports.
  2. Search the company as a client and, where relevant, search the lobbying firm or other entity as the registrant. A client and registrant can be different names in the filing.
  3. Try relevant affiliated-organization names and use available filters such as lobbyist, issue area, government entity contacted, and foreign entity when those fields fit your question.
  4. Note the report type and quarter or date range alongside the search terms and filters, then repeat with related names if needed.

LD-1 filings concern registrations; LD-2 filings report quarterly lobbying activity. Read the disclosed issue areas and government entities contacted as reported activity, not as proof of a particular outcome or of influence.

How to search LD-203 contributions without confusing them with FEC donations

Use the separate LD-203 contributions search for the LDA contributions-report family. Its search fields include registrant, lobbyist, contribution date and amount, contribution type, contributor, payee, and honoree. These records answer a different question from FEC campaign-finance data, so report them separately rather than combining their dollar amounts.

How to interpret results—and search gaps

  • A company name in a filing identifies a disclosed role or record; it does not establish that lobbying achieved a policy result, was effective, or caused a government action.
  • No result for one company-name search does not prove there was no related political activity. A record may use a PAC, individual, client, registrant, subsidiary, or affiliated-organization name, and the portals divide information by report type.
  • State and local campaign-finance or lobbying records are outside these federal systems. For those, identify the relevant state or locality and consult its election, ethics, or lobbying disclosure agency.
  • For a company comparison, define the companies, name-matching rules, reporting period, and record categories first. Compare like with like: individual donations with individual donations, committee activity with committee activity, and lobbying activity with lobbying activity.

Keep a search log for reproducible results

For each search, save the entity string, whether it was searched as a company, contributor, committee, client, registrant, or affiliate, the report type, date range, and filters. This makes clear what the search covered and helps distinguish a narrow name match from a broader review of related entities. LDA.gov also provides a REST API for downloading reports through its public disclosure portal at LDA.gov.
