To find Beagle 2 in NASA Mars orbiter imagery, start with HiRISE observation ESP_039308_1915, acquired December 15, 2014. NASA labels a feature in the image as interpreted Beagle 2 hardware and gives its approximate location as 11.5° north, 90.4° east. You can use that observation ID to open the image record, inspect its caption and scale, and follow related image products.

Find the NASA image that identifies Beagle 2

  1. Open NASA’s Beagle 2 Lander Observed by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image record. It presents an annotated excerpt from HiRISE observation ESP_039308_1915, taken December 15, 2014.

  2. Use the image caption to orient yourself: NASA places the interpreted feature at approximately 11.5° north, 90.4° east and includes a 10-meter scale bar. These references apply to the captioned image excerpt, not to a claim that the feature’s exact dimensions or condition are known.

  3. Follow the record’s links to other products from the observation if you want a different view or more context. Keep the observation ID with you when searching; it is a more precise handle than a general search for “Mars lander image.”

Compare the other Beagle 2 observations

NASA’s Beagle 2 composite article identifies two earlier HiRISE observations used alongside the 2014 image. The images were taken at different times and under different Sun angles, allowing the team to compare how the suspected object reflected light.

The changing glints led the team to interpret the reflections as coming from more than one deployed panel. That supports the identification, but it does not establish the lander’s full condition.

What the images do—and do not—show

Beagle 2 was released by ESA’s Mars Express and was not heard from after its expected landing on December 25, 2003. NASA’s 2015 captions describe the HiRISE feature as interpreted Beagle 2 hardware, near the center of the planned landing area. That wording matters: the images support the identification, but the captions do not claim that every detail of the lander’s state is visible or settled.

NASA planetary scientist Tim Parker explained that the bright spots appeared in two HiRISE images. Because a cosmic-ray strike on the detector would not account for a feature repeated in separate images, the repeated appearance supported the conclusion that the spots were on the ground. The observations taken with different Sun angles also showed glints from different parts of the object. Parker said the team had not yet determined whether all of Beagle 2’s panels had opened. See the NASA Science transcript for his explanation.

Find other landers in Mars orbiter images

Use NASA/JPL Photojournal for mission records

NASA/JPL Photojournal provides mission image records and downloadable products. Its archive pages can be filtered by mission, target, spacecraft, and instrument. Search for a lander mission such as Pathfinder or Phoenix, then check the record metadata for Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and HiRISE to find orbital views rather than surface-camera images.

Use Pathfinder as a documented example

NASA/JPL Photojournal has a HiRISE image of the Mars Pathfinder landing site and its surroundings, acquired December 21, 2006. The record describes local geology and surface hardware. Open the Pathfinder landing-site image record and use its metadata and image products to explore the scene.

Browse the HiRISE viewer

The HiRISE image viewer describes a zoomable Mars map with a menu for selecting images. Example image pages offer browse, large JPEG, and full-scale versions, plus a context map; see the example image page. These viewer pages are older, so confirm that the specific route loads before relying on it.

Verify a candidate before calling it a lander

A bright or dark mark in an orbital image is not enough by itself to identify hardware. For each candidate, compare the record’s mission and instrument, observation ID and date, captioned location and scale, and whether the feature persists in separate observations. Then consider whether lighting changes or image artifacts could explain its appearance. Beagle 2 is a useful example because NASA’s interpretation draws on repeated detections and glints that changed with illumination.
