On most HP EliteBook keyboards, the screenshot button is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen near the upper-right corner. Press PrtSc to copy the entire display, Alt + PrtSc to copy the active window, Windows + PrtSc to save a full-screen PNG automatically, or Windows + Shift + S to select an area. If your EliteBook does not respond, try Fn + PrtSc; some HP laptop layouts require the Fn key.
Find the screenshot button on your EliteBook
Look along the top row of keys, usually toward the upper-right. The key may be marked PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen. The label can share a key with another function, so the printed text or icon may be smaller than the main lettering.
On some HP laptop layouts, the Print Screen function is secondary and requires Fn. If pressing PrtSc alone appears to do nothing, hold Fn and press PrtSc. The Windows shortcuts below provide alternatives when the key is difficult to identify or use.
Choose the right capture method

Copy the entire screen with PrtSc
- Arrange the desktop exactly as you want it captured.
- Press PrtSc. If your EliteBook requires the function modifier, press Fn + PrtSc.
- Open Paint, a document, an email, or another application that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the image from the Clipboard.
- Use that application’s save command to create an image file, or leave it in the document.
A plain PrtSc press does not automatically create a file. It places the screen image in Windows memory (the Clipboard), so paste it before copying something else or closing applications that you need for the workflow.

Capture only the active window
- Click the window you want to document so it is active.
- Press Alt + PrtSc (or Alt + Fn + PrtSc on a layout that requires Fn).
- Open Paint, a document, email, or another image-capable application.
- Press Ctrl + V, then save or edit the pasted image.
This is useful for documenting one dialog or application without including the rest of the desktop.
Save a full-screen screenshot automatically
- Press Windows + PrtSc. If necessary, use Windows + Fn + PrtSc.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to PicturesScreenshots in your user folder.
- Open the newly created PNG, rename it, move it, or attach it to your report.
This shortcut saves the full display as a PNG instead of leaving the capture only on the Clipboard. If you use more than one monitor, Windows captures the screen arrangement as it appears when the shortcut is pressed; use a region or window capture when you need a tighter result.
Select an area with Snipping Tool
Windows + Shift + S is the most flexible built-in method. Microsoft describes it as opening a dimmed desktop with choices for rectangular, free-form, window, and full-screen capture.

- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the desktop darkens, choose a capture mode from the toolbar: rectangular, free-form, window, or full screen.
- Drag around the region, click a window, or select the full-screen option.
- Open the notification that appears to launch Snipping Tool.
- Crop or annotate if needed, then use Snipping Tool’s save command.
The same action also places the capture on the Clipboard, so you can paste it immediately with Ctrl + V. This method avoids having to trim unrelated desktop content later.
Make PrtSc open screen snipping
Windows can assign the Print Screen key to the Snipping Tool overlay rather than the traditional full-screen Clipboard capture. If pressing PrtSc opens a selection toolbar, check the Windows keyboard accessibility setting:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility, then Keyboard.
- Find the Print Screen option that opens screen snipping.
- Turn it on or off according to the behavior you want.
With the setting enabled, PrtSc intentionally opens the snipping overlay. With it disabled, PrtSc follows the conventional full-screen Clipboard behavior (subject to the HP model’s Fn requirement).

Fix a PrtSc key that appears not to work
Try the HP function modifier
Press Fn + PrtSc. HP documents that some notebook layouts require Fn for the Print Screen function. Also try Windows + Fn + PrtSc when you want an automatically saved file.
Use the Windows selection shortcut
Press Windows + Shift + S. It bypasses uncertainty about the physical Print Screen key and should present the capture toolbar on a Windows EliteBook.
Check the Clipboard rather than a folder
If PrtSc worked, the image may be waiting on the Clipboard instead of in Pictures. Open Paint or another destination and press Ctrl + V. Save the pasted image from that application.

Look for the snipping assignment
If PrtSc opens a dimmed overlay, that is usually the Windows Print Screen shortcut setting, not a failed key. Review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and change the Print Screen behavior if you need direct Clipboard copying.
Check what you actually pressed
On compact EliteBook keyboards, confirm that you are using the key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen rather than Delete, Insert, or another shared function. Hold Fn only when the layout treats Print Screen as a secondary action.
Save, edit, and share the result
- Use PrtSc or Alt + PrtSc when you want to paste directly into a ticket, message, or document.
- Use Windows + PrtSc when you need a predictable PNG file without opening an editor first.
- Use Windows + Shift + S when you need a particular region, a single window, or quick annotation.
- After saving, open the image and verify that private data, passwords, notifications, and unrelated windows are not visible before sharing it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my screenshot disappear after I copied something else?
PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc use the Clipboard, so a later copy operation can replace the image. Paste the capture into Paint, a document, or another destination immediately, then save it if you need a persistent file.

Windows + PrtSc creates a PNG in PicturesScreenshots. PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc do not create that file automatically; confirm those captures by pasting with Ctrl + V.
