For a clear first look at how a Milky Way-like galaxy can form, start with ESA’s Vintergatan animation. To inspect simulation particles interactively, use Firefly and its FIRE examples; for public simulation outputs and comparisons, explore FIRE’s Latte pages and FlatHUB. These resources show modelled histories or data—not a recording of the actual Milky Way’s past.
Where can I watch a Milky Way formation simulation?
Start with ESA’s Vintergatan animation
ESA’s Vintergatan page, dated 21 March 2024, presents a simulated Milky Way-like galaxy from the early universe to 3 billion years ago. It shows dark-matter structures assembling, followed by gas and star formation, and marks a collision involving the young galaxy. ESA credits the animation to “Vintergatan – Renaud, Agertz et al. (2021).” It is a guided visual introduction, rather than an interactive dataset.
The animation’s own legend identifies gas in blue, stars in white, dark matter in red, and iron in green. Its time labels use redshift (z) and gigayears (Gyr). Those colors are specific to this animation; other visualizations may use different color schemes or display different quantities.
Move from animation to interactive examples
Firefly is a web application for interactively exploring 3D particle data. Its FIRE examples include a low-resolution view that emphasizes hot outflows through velocity vectors and temperature, a high-resolution view of disk surface density and spiral structure, and a disk-formation time series. The live demo notes that pink points indicate dark matter when zoomed out. Firefly displays model data; it is not itself the physical simulation.

How do scientists simulate the Milky Way forming?
A formation simulation calculates how modelled matter and structures evolve over time. Cosmological galaxy simulations can show dark matter, gas, and stars, and may represent a galaxy similar in mass or structure to the Milky Way. The results are visualized as particles, rendered images, movies, or datasets that can be examined with specialized tools.
That distinction matters: these are model histories, not observations of the Milky Way’s entire past. A simulation’s colors and visible features represent selected quantities from that particular model and rendering. For technical details about a model’s assumptions and methods, follow the project’s scientific papers and references.

Where can you get FIRE Latte data?
The Latte overview describes high-resolution FIRE-2 simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies, including m12i and m12f. It presents them as theoretical tools for studying galaxy formation in a cosmological setting. For a more direct path to outputs, the FIRE Milky Way page says raw present-day (z=0) snapshots are available for m12f, m12i, and m12m. These include dark-matter, gas, and star particles, as well as associated synthetic Gaia DR2-like surveys through Ananke.

Illustris for project media and wider context
Illustris is a broad cosmological galaxy-formation project completed in late 2013. Its site brings together scientific background, results and references, movies and images, public data access, and interactive exploration tools. Use it to explore galaxy formation across a cosmological simulation; a Milky Way-mass zoom simulation such as Latte is more directly focused on individual galaxy analogues.

FlatHUB for catalog exploration
FlatHUB is a data-exploration platform, not a narrative animation. It lets users browse and filter data, create preview plots, compare simulations with curated observational or experimental collections, and download subsets. Its listed catalogs include FIRE, Gaia DR2 and DR3, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG, alongside Milky Way and cosmological galaxy-formation collections.
What do the colors and time labels mean?
Read the legend and timeline for the specific visualization you are viewing. In ESA’s Vintergatan, the color key distinguishes gas, stars, dark matter, and iron; it is not a universal code for galaxy simulations. Firefly’s examples can instead emphasize quantities such as temperature, velocity, or disk surface density, so color and visual marks need to be interpreted in the context of that example.

Time labels such as redshift and Gyr are essential context. They tell you where a frame sits in the model’s timeline; they are not decorative labels or, by themselves, proof that every detail represents the Milky Way’s actual history.
How are Gaia maps different from formation simulations?
Gaia-based Milky Way visuals belong to a different category. ESA describes its Gaia visuals as artist impressions based on Gaia data: Gaia maps the galaxy from within using information about individual stars, and its data have changed understanding of structures such as the central bar and spiral arms. These are depictions informed by observations, not simulations of the galaxy forming.

Can you reuse ESA’s animation?
ESA’s Vintergatan page warns that the video contains third-party content and must not be modified or reused in other productions without explicit authorization. The page lists the ESA Standard Licence; check the page’s licensing information before using the animation beyond viewing it there.
