Search a 3D platformer in deliberate passes: clear the main route, inspect side paths and vertical spaces, note anything blocked by a movement ability, then return when you can reach it. The details vary by game—some collectibles are objects, while others may be characters to rescue—so use the game’s own counters and clues rather than assuming one genre-wide method.
Search an area systematically
Start without a guide so you can learn how the level communicates routes and secrets. On your first pass, follow the obvious path while checking spaces just outside it. This is a practical search method, not a universal rule about where every game puts collectibles.
- Clear the main route. Look behind large objects, around corners, and along the route beyond the point where the camera seems to lead.
- Inspect side paths and height changes. Check branches, upper ledges, lower platforms, and places beyond the normal jump line.
- Notice unusual features. Isolated platforms, conspicuous gaps, surfaces that look breakable, repeated visual markers, or paths that appear to continue off-screen may be worth investigating. The meaning of these clues depends on the game; check its controls and tutorials before assuming a particular action will work.
- Test traversal you already have. Try the movement actions the game has taught you, then record anything that still appears out of reach.
Tell a hidden collectible from a route you cannot reach yet
An item you can see but cannot reach may be gated behind a later movement ability rather than hidden behind a secret entrance or puzzle. Keep those possibilities separate in your notes: “visible, unreachable,” “possible puzzle,” and “suspected hidden route” are more useful clues than simply marking a spot as missed.

Return after gaining movement abilities
When you obtain a new power or suit, revisit the locations you marked as inaccessible and test whether it changes how you move. Astro’s Playroom offers a concrete example: its Monkey Suit enables climbing steep walls. That is a game-specific mechanic, not a promise that every platformer gates collectibles behind new abilities.

Follow the game’s own clues
Use tutorials, control prompts, level signage, and any in-game map or counter the game provides. There is no established universal map feature, audio cue, or visual signal shared by 3D platformers, so verify clues in the particular game you are playing.
Keep track of what you have checked
A short area-by-area log can prevent repeated searches and make a later guide search more precise. Record the level, the counter shown by the game, routes you have cleared, and suspicious locations that need another look. A simple note on paper or a device works if the game does not provide a tracking interface; no standard tracking system exists across the genre.

- Progress: the game’s visible collectible count, if it shows one.
- Checked: main route, side branches, upper and lower routes.
- Revisit: locations that appear to require an ability or puzzle solution you do not yet have.
Use a guide for a specific gap, not as a substitute for the game
If your notes narrow the problem to one stage or one missing item, search using the exact game name, level, and collectible type. Community-made lists can help identify possible locations, but their presence does not confirm accuracy. For example, a Steam Community listing for a Raccoo Venture 101% collectibles guide shows that player-created guides exist; it does not verify that guide’s completeness. Check that any guide matches your game version and platform, and compare its directions with the game itself.
What collectible rescue looks like in Astro games
Astro Bot: scattered crew to rescue
Astro Bot is a single-player PS5 3D action platformer. PlayStation’s official game page describes more than 50 planets. Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet described the objective in 2024 as a mission to rescue 300 bots scattered across the galaxies, including more than 150 cameo characters among them. Those figures make the game a clear example of character rescue as a collectible goal; they do not provide a complete location-by-location route.

Astro’s Playroom: artifacts, puzzle pieces, and a return incentive
In a 2020 PlayStation.Blog post, Team Asobi described Astro’s Playroom as spanning four worlds and 16 stages, with distinct power-up suits and PlayStation-history artifacts, puzzle pieces, cameos, and Easter eggs. The post reports 96 puzzle pieces and more than 60 hidden cameos. It also says that collecting all main-campaign artifacts and puzzle pieces unlocks eight speed-run challenges. These are figures and rewards for that game, not genre-wide expectations.

Once you have cleared the levels, review your notes and the game’s counters, if available. Revisit locations tied to powers you gained later, then focus any remaining search on specific areas rather than starting over everywhere. If full collection unlocks extra content in your game, use its stated requirements to decide whether that cleanup is worth doing; Astro’s Playroom’s speed-run challenges are one documented example.
