To clean up a photo library safely, first make a separate backup and identify where the authoritative library lives. Then use Apple Photos’ built-in Duplicates collection where available, review similar-but-not-identical images yourself, and delete in small batches. Google Photos currently has no built-in automatic duplicate-removal feature according to recent Help Community guidance, so its items must be checked manually.

Duplicate or near-duplicate: what are you trying to remove?

An exact duplicate is another copy of the same photo or video. A near-duplicate may be a burst frame, a crop, an edited version, a resized copy, or a separate shot of the same scene. Those similar images can differ in resolution, focus, expression, edits, or metadata, so removing one automatically may discard something you wanted to keep.

Apple Photos provides a Duplicates collection, but Apple’s support instructions do not explain the matching algorithm or promise that it groups all of those near-duplicate cases. Treat any app-generated group as a set of candidates to inspect—not as a guarantee that every image is disposable or that every similar image will be found.

Back up first and locate the library you are cleaning

  1. Make a separate copy of the photo library. Copy it to another location and verify that the copy opens before deleting anything. Microsoft explains the basic distinction: copying leaves the source in its original location and adds a copy at the chosen location. The source does not prescribe a particular backup device or storage service. Microsoft’s explanation of copying and moving in Photos
  2. Identify the authoritative library. Check whether the photos are in Apple Photos, Google Photos, a local Windows folder, OneDrive, or an iCloud Photos-synced folder. If a folder is synced, deletion may affect cloud copies or other devices. Microsoft specifically warns that deleting files from an iCloud Photos synced folder also deletes them from iCloud. Microsoft’s guidance on Photos and synced folders
  3. Confirm recovery options before cleanup. Find the app’s Recently Deleted or trash area and understand what it allows you to recover. Do not empty it until you have confirmed that the retained images and separate backup are usable.

Find and merge duplicates in Apple Photos

On Mac

In Photos, open Utilities in the sidebar and select Duplicates. Review the groups, select only those that are genuinely redundant, then choose Merge. Apple says one original remains where the selected duplicates were located. If the library is large, analysis may take time. Merged duplicates appear in Recently Deleted, where Apple says they can be recovered for up to 30 days. Apple’s instructions for removing duplicates on Mac

The support page does not establish that this feature finds every crop, edit, burst frame, or other near-duplicate. Apple’s iPhone duplicate-photo guidance

Handle Google Photos and Windows libraries carefully

Google Photos

Google Photos Help Community answers dated May 8, 2025 and May 8, 2026 say there is no built-in automatic feature to identify and remove duplicates. This is current community guidance, not a formal Google product specification. For now, search and inspect items manually; before deleting, confirm the account and library you are viewing and check what other devices or services are synced. Windows Photos and folders

Windows Photos can search by filename, date, file type, and location; Microsoft also documents semantic search in specified Windows and device circumstances. These are search capabilities, not documented duplicate detection. Microsoft’s Windows Photos search guidance

Be precise about the action you choose: copying retains the source and creates another copy, while moving changes the file’s location. Removing a folder from the Photos app removes it from the app’s view; it does not necessarily delete the files. However, deleting items from an iCloud Photos-synced folder deletes them from iCloud as well. Microsoft’s Photos file and folder guidance

Review near-duplicates by hand

Compare similar photos at full size before deciding which to keep. A practical review checks:

  • Resolution: Is one copy larger or less compressed?
  • Crop and framing: Does one version include useful detail that the other cuts off?
  • Edit state: Would removing the edited version lose changes you want?
  • Focus and exposure: Is one frame sharper or better lit?
  • Expression and timing: If the images are from a burst, is one moment clearly better?
  • Metadata: Does one version preserve information you care about, such as capture details?

Keep both when the differences matter—for example, if one is an original and the other is a meaningful edit. There is no universal rule for automatically choosing the best frame, and a visual match alone does not prove that two files are interchangeable.

Delete in small batches and verify before emptying trash

  1. Review one small group or batch at a time rather than selecting a large library of candidates all at once.
  2. After merging or deleting, confirm the retained photo is present in the expected library and that the separate backup still opens.
  3. Check the app’s Recently Deleted or trash area to make sure the removed items are recoverable if you made a mistake.
  4. Empty Recently Deleted or trash only after you are confident the cleanup is correct. Recovery periods and deletion behavior vary by service; Apple documents a 30-day recovery period for merged duplicates on Mac, but that should not be assumed for other platforms.

When to consider a third-party duplicate finder

Duplicate-finder software exists, but the available vendor documentation establishes only that a product offers a duplicate-picture finding feature; it is not enough to recommend a particular utility today. Before trusting one with a library, verify its current operating-system support, whether it matches exact files or visual similarities, whether it lets you preview and review groups, what happens to metadata, how deletion can be undone, and how it handles cloud-synced folders. Do not grant broad access or approve automatic deletion until those details are clear. Vendor documentation describing a duplicate-picture finding feature

For a basic cleanup, Apple Photos’ built-in duplicate review is the best-supported native option covered here. A current cross-platform comparison of third-party tools is not established, so choosing one requires checking its current safeguards and behavior rather than assuming all duplicate finders work alike.
