You can find the Sombrero Galaxy, or M104, in Virgo with a springtime star hop and a telescope. It is too faint for the unaided eye, but NASA says it can be seen with small telescopes and is easiest to spot in May. Finding its bright central glow is realistic; seeing the famous dust lane is much less certain and depends on aperture and sky conditions.
When to look for M104
NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog says M104 is most easily spotted during May. That is a useful seasonal guide, not a guarantee for every location: the galaxy’s height and visibility depend on your latitude, date, local horizon, and how dark the sky is. Check a current planetarium app or star chart for your observing site and night before setting up.
M104 lies in Virgo. For a Northern Hemisphere spring star hop, Space.com’s 2026 guide suggests finding Spica first, then identifying Corvus, the nearby four-star pattern that forms a diamond. A diagonal line of fainter stars near Gienah and Algorab points toward the area of sky containing the galaxy. This route helps orient you, but it does not give precise angular offsets for each step, so use a chart or app to finish the pointing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to locate the galaxy
- Check the sky for your location and date. Use a current planetarium app or chart to confirm that Virgo is above your local horizon and to identify where M104 lies.
- Find Spica and Corvus. Use Spica as a landmark, then look for Corvus’s four bright stars arranged in a diamond.
- Follow the nearby faint-star line. Use the diagonal of faint stars near Gienah and Algorab as an orientation aid toward M104’s part of Virgo.
- Sweep slowly with a telescope. M104 is beyond naked-eye visibility, so search the indicated area through the telescope and compare the field with your chart. A printed atlas showing Virgo and Corvus can also help, though no particular atlas is required.
Published coordinates differ between the consulted pages: Space.com lists right ascension 12h 41m 20s and declination −11° 45′ 59″, while NASA’s 2025 object page lists 12h 39m 59.32s and −11° 37′ 16.78″. For precise pointing, use a current chart or planetarium application rather than assuming either page’s coordinate pair is definitive.

What you can see through a telescope
NASA lists M104 at apparent magnitude 8.0 and says it is beyond naked-eye visibility but viewable with small or modest amateur telescopes. In an eyepiece, expect a faint, elongated glow rather than the richly detailed galaxy shown in observatory photographs. Darkness, atmospheric clarity, aperture, and observing experience all affect what stands out.
| Observing setup | What the sources suggest | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Small or modest telescope | NASA says M104 can be spotted with small telescopes; its Hubble page calls it readily viewable with a modest amateur telescope. | These are general descriptions, not a guarantee for every telescope or sky. |
| 6-inch telescope | Space.com’s 2026 observing guide says the bright core may be visible. | This is editorial observing guidance, not a controlled comparison; conditions and observer experience matter. |
| 8-inch or larger telescope | The same guide says a subtle suggestion of the dust lane may be visible. | It describes a possibility under pristinely clear conditions, not a typical or assured view. |
Why the dust lane is harder to see
M104’s nearly edge-on disk and thick dust lane give it the distinctive “Sombrero” appearance in detailed images. The brighter central region is the more attainable visual target; detecting the lane is a subtler challenge. Even with a larger telescope, do not expect the crisp contrast or detail visible in high-resolution space-telescope imagery.
