Start with the game publisher’s official site and the game’s Google Play listing. If the game is unavailable where you live, check whether the publisher offers an official download or supported store for your country before changing Play settings or installing an APK. Availability depends on the specific game, country, account, and device; a VPN or APK is not a reliable way to bypass those restrictions.
Why a Japanese game may not appear on Google Play
Google Play availability varies by country or region. Publishers choose the countries where their apps are distributed, so a listing can exist in Japan but not in your country. Google’s country availability guidance explains how availability works; the game’s own listing is the place to check the title’s current status.
A missing listing does not by itself tell you whether the game has a separate official download, whether your device is compatible, or whether the publisher permits accounts from outside Japan. Those details are title-specific.

How to check whether there is an official way to get the game
- Search Google Play for the exact game name and publisher. Confirm that the listing is published by the actual game company, and review its country availability and device compatibility.
- Check the publisher’s official website and support pages. Look for a global release, Japan-only Android release, or link to an official alternative store or direct download. Google explains that developers select distribution countries in Play Console.
- Read the publisher’s conditions before installing. Check country and account eligibility, age restrictions, supported Android versions and devices, and how updates are delivered. An official download does not necessarily mean the game is supported in every country.
- If the official route is unclear, ask the publisher. Without a stated route, do not assume that an APK will install, launch, or work with your account.
Compare the available routes

Should you change your Google Play country?
Only consider this if you have genuinely moved. Google says, “To set up a new country or region, you must be in that location and have a payment method from the new country or region.” See Google’s Play country-change rules for the current requirements.

Google generally limits country changes to once every 90 days and warns that changing your Play country can affect access to content. The change is not a general method for visiting another region’s catalog: location, payment eligibility, and the game’s own distribution rules matter.
Can you install a Japanese APK?
Android supports installing apps from outside Google Play, including downloads provided by developers. Google describes its app-distribution and safety approach at How Google Play Works. But installing a package is only one step: it does not guarantee that the game will launch, receive updates, accept your account, or allow play from your country. Publishers may apply account, region, device, or integrity checks.

If the publisher or a trusted store provides the package, use the current Android installation flow and follow the prompts on your device. Avoid modified packages and sources whose identity, signature, or update process you cannot verify. The official Android sources explain sideloading and verification concerns but do not endorse a particular third-party APK repository.

Android’s developer-verification protections began on September 30, 2026 for specified installs from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand on certified devices running Android 7 or later. The rule is specific to those countries, devices, and distribution routes; it is not a blanket description of every sideload. Check the current Android developer verification guidance and the installation prompt shown on your device. Android’s June 2026 announcement describes the rollout.

What to do if there is no supported route
If the publisher does not offer a supported download for your country and the game is not available to you on Google Play, contact the publisher or wait for a local release. An unknown or repackaged APK is not a dependable substitute: it may be unsafe, fail to update, or be blocked when the game checks your account or device.
The right answer for a specific title depends on its publisher, your country and Play account, your Android version and device certification, and any launch checks imposed by the game. Verify those particulars on official pages before installing.
