To find a Wi-Fi dead zone, compare the connection in a problem room with the same device near your router, then check whether the broadband itself is working. Start with free router-placement changes; add an extender, mesh system or wired access point only if the weak areas remain. The right fix depends on whether the problem is isolated to one room or spread across the home.
How to tell whether the problem is Wi-Fi or broadband
A connection that drops or slows in one part of the home often points to a local Wi-Fi coverage problem. If several devices also fail near the router—or a wired connection fails too—the issue may be with broadband service or equipment rather than wireless coverage. Ofcom recommends checking equipment, restarting devices where appropriate and trying a network cable if possible: Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
- Check that the modem and router are powered on and that cables are connected.
- Test the same device near the router, then in each room where Wi-Fi is unreliable. Note whether the connection drops, the signal is very weak or only the speed seems lower.
- Check another device in the problem area. If only one device struggles, its settings or hardware may be involved.
- If a stationary device can connect by Ethernet, test it that way. If the wired connection also fails, troubleshoot broadband service or contact your provider before buying Wi-Fi equipment.
- Restart equipment if appropriate, then repeat the tests.
Signal bars and performance can vary by location. Thick walls, floors, metal, water-filled objects such as fish tanks, and nearby electrical equipment can weaken or disrupt the signal. Microsoft explains how home layout affects Wi-Fi in its home-layout guide.

Move the router to a more open, central spot
Place the router as centrally as practical, elevated and in the open rather than inside a cabinet, on the floor or tucked behind furniture. Keep it away from thick walls, metal surfaces, fish tanks, microwaves and cordless devices where possible. Ofcom’s Wi-Fi improvement advice covers placement and common sources of interference.

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Change one thing at a time and retest
After moving the router, test the same device in the rooms that were weak. If needed, make another small placement change and test again. Changing one factor at a time helps show whether placement made a difference; it also avoids mistaking a broadband fault for a coverage improvement.
Choose a fix that matches the pattern
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Reposition the existing router | The router is low, enclosed or off to one side. | Free and simple, but may not overcome thick construction or a large, multi-floor layout. See Ofcom’s guidance. |
| Wi-Fi range extender | One localized area needs better coverage. | It must receive a usable signal from the router; placing it in the dead zone itself is unlikely to help. Follow the exact model’s placement guidance. See TP-Link’s extender placement guide. |
| Mesh system | Several rooms or floors need coverage. | Units need suitable placement and compatible models. Check compatibility for the exact product family before adding nodes. See TP-Link’s comparison of mesh, extenders and powerline. |
| Ethernet plus a Wi-Fi access point | A cable can reach the weak area, or a wireless relay cannot maintain a stable link. | Requires cable routing and setup, but avoids relying on a weak wireless hop. TP-Link describes Ethernet-connected access-point mode in its extender placement guidance. |
| Powerline networking | A wireless path is difficult and the home’s electrical wiring is suitable. | TP-Link says adapters need to be on the same electrical circuit; confirm this before buying. See its solution comparison. |
Place an extender where it can still reach the router
An extender helps a localized gap only if it can receive a good signal from the router and then cover the weak area. A halfway position is a rough starting point, not a guarantee: walls, distance and the specific model affect placement. TP-Link advises placing its extenders where the router signal remains strong, and moving them closer to the router when obstacles interfere. Its placement guide gives model-oriented examples, not universal distance guarantees.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions and retest the target room after installation. If the extender cannot maintain a stable connection to the router, moving it closer or using Ethernet in access-point mode may be more effective than leaving it deep in the weak area.

Mesh is worth considering when weak coverage affects multiple rooms or floors rather than one isolated spot. Place the units so they can maintain a connection between nodes, and follow the system maker’s placement advice. Ofcom mentions two or three mesh boxes as a possible way to reach more rooms; that is an example, not a universal node count. The layout and equipment determine what is needed. Do not assume products with the same brand name can all join one mesh. For example, Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in a mesh with older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points (Wi-Fi 5). Check the exact model family and current rules in Google’s Wifi placement and compatibility support information.

If Ethernet can reach the affected room, you can connect a stationary device directly or use the cable to connect a Wi-Fi access point. This can be useful when distance or obstacles make a wireless relay unreliable, because the access point’s connection back to the router does not depend on that weak wireless path. The trade-off is running and setting up the cable and access point. Ofcom recommends trying a network cable when diagnosing a connection issue; TP-Link also describes wired access-point mode for its extenders in its setup guidance.

Retest after the change
- Repeat the same device checks in the same rooms, including the near-router comparison.
- Confirm the connection is stable where it previously dropped, not just that signal bars look different.
- If only one room remains weak, reconsider the placement of the extender or access point.
- If multiple rooms or floors remain weak, review router and mesh-node placement and verify that the system is compatible.
- If wired service also fails, return to broadband troubleshooting rather than adding more wireless equipment.
