There is no single repair for a “long-standing Windows bug.” The safe approach is to identify the exact symptom, record your Windows version and recent changes, establish a reproducible baseline, and test one reversible change at a time. Start with the built-in troubleshooter that matches the problem, compare normal startup with Safe Mode or a clean boot when background software may be involved, use DISM and System File Checker only when corruption is plausible, and choose recovery tools according to when the failure began.
This process is designed to protect personal files and leave you with evidence if the behavior is a genuine product defect. It does not assume that a problem described as “a Windows bug” has one known cause or that any particular command will fix it.
First, put the problem in the right Windows context
Identify the edition and build before changing anything. Press Win+R, enter winver, and record the version and OS build. Also note whether you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11, the affected app or device, and whether the computer is managed by an employer or school. Microsoft’s startup guidance covers both versions, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides the normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date under its general support policy. Check Microsoft’s current lifecycle information and any applicable Extended Security Updates eligibility before treating an unsupported Windows 10 installation as if it had the same security status as Windows 11.
A support date does not explain a particular failure. It does change the risk calculation: keep a current backup, be cautious about obtaining replacement components, and do not disable security features merely to make an old installation appear to work.

1. Define the failure before trying a fix
A symptom and a recent-change timeline are clues, not proof of cause. Write a short incident record before opening a repair tool.
- Expected result: what should have happened?
- Observed result: what happened instead, including the exact error text or code?
- Trigger and timing: when did it start, and does it happen at every attempt, only after sleep, after sign-in, or under a particular workload?
- Reproduction steps: list the smallest sequence that reliably causes the failure.
- Scope: identify the app, account, external monitor, printer, network, storage device, or other component involved.
- System identity: record Windows edition, version, build, and the affected app or driver version if shown.
- Recent changes: note Windows updates, display or other driver updates, newly installed software, peripherals, policy changes, or settings changes.
Do not clear event logs, delete folders, or change several settings while you are still establishing the baseline. If the fault is confined to one app or physical device, follow that product’s troubleshooting path rather than applying generic Windows repair commands. For common Windows problems, open Get Help’s Windows troubleshooters and choose the problem-specific diagnostic. The steps vary by issue, so a troubleshooter that does not match your symptom is not useful evidence.
2. Protect data and record the starting state
Make a separate backup of important documents, photos, project files, browser data, and other irreplaceable material before Windows Update troubleshooting or recovery work. Microsoft’s update guidance explicitly advises backing up personal files. A restore point is not a substitute for that backup: it is a record of system state, not an independent copy of every personal file.

3. Test whether startup software is involved
Safe Mode and a clean boot are comparisons, not cures. They help answer whether the failure requires a nonessential driver, service, or startup program.
Use Safe Mode as a narrow comparison
Safe Mode starts Windows with only essential services and drivers. On a typical Windows 11 installation, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. In the recovery menus choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option. Labels and routes can differ by version; Microsoft documents the available choices in Windows startup settings.
Reproduce the problem in Safe Mode without changing anything else. If it disappears, the result narrows the search to software or drivers that do not load in that mode; it does not identify which one. If it remains, ordinary startup software is less likely to be the cause, although hardware, core Windows components, or the affected app can still be involved. Note exactly what you tested, then restart normally.

A clean boot disables non-Microsoft services and startup programs while retaining more of the normal desktop than Safe Mode. Sign in with an administrator account, open msconfig, and use the Services tab to hide Microsoft services before disabling the remaining services. In Task Manager, disable the relevant startup applications, restart, and test the failure. Microsoft’s procedure is detailed in How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

Write down each item you disable. A clean boot can temporarily remove audio, security, synchronization, VPN, or other functions, so it should not be treated as a permanent configuration. After testing, return msconfig to Normal startup and re-enable the startup items and services you changed. On managed or networked computers, policy can restrict these controls; Microsoft cautions against changing advanced boot options under policy without guidance from the responsible support engineer.
4. Match a repair to the evidence
Repair Windows components only when corruption is plausible
If error messages, failed updates, or other evidence points to damaged Windows components or protected system files, use an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and run Microsoft’s documented sequence:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow.
Leave the window open until System File Checker reaches 100 percent and reports its result. DISM repairs the Windows image; SFC checks protected system files against that repaired image. The order matters. These commands can take time and are not a diagnosis or universal remedy for every persistent bug.
Microsoft explains that DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source. If the update client itself is broken, a different repair source may be required; that is an advanced scenario, not a reason to improvise with downloaded images or undocumented switches. Use the instructions in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files and record the final messages.

Roll back a driver only for a matching driver-related symptom
If the issue began immediately after a specific display-driver update and concerns a monitor or graphics output, a rollback is a scenario-specific option. Microsoft’s external-monitor guidance covers that case at Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows. Do not generalize that advice to unrelated symptoms, and do not uninstall arbitrary drivers simply because the computer is unstable.
5. Choose recovery according to when the failure began
System Restore for a plausible recent system change
Microsoft describes the feature this way: “With System Restore you can revert your PC’s state to a previous point in time.” In practice, System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs associated with a selected restore point while leaving personal files unaffected, according to Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.
Use it only when the timeline supports a recent system change as the likely trigger. Open System Restore, select a point before that change, and use Scan for affected programs to inspect what will be removed or restored. A restore point does not repair every application or hardware problem, and it may not exist for the date you need.

Windows Recovery Environment for startup or broader recovery problems
If Windows will not start normally, or ordinary troubleshooting cannot reach the desktop, Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) provides several tools. Microsoft lists Startup Repair, uninstalling updates, Startup Settings, Command Prompt, System Image Recovery, and Reset this PC in Windows recovery environment.

These choices have different consequences. Startup Repair targets boot problems; uninstalling an update is relevant when the failure follows a particular update; Startup Settings provides Safe Mode; and System Image Recovery requires a previously created image. Reset this PC is more consequential. Its options determine whether personal files are kept or removed, and installed applications and settings are not preserved in the same way as a normal restart. Read the selected option’s description and confirm your backup before proceeding.
If the device is encrypted, locate the BitLocker recovery key before entering Windows RE. Recovery tools may require it, and being unable to unlock the drive can stop an otherwise appropriate repair. Recovery options do not replace a separate personal-data backup.

7. Report a persistent, reproducible bug responsibly
When the problem survives appropriate tests, use the Feedback Hub app rather than describing it only as “Windows is broken.” Microsoft’s instructions at Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app explain how to search for similar reports, add your experience, and submit new feedback.
- Search for an existing report using the exact error text, app or device name, and a distinctive symptom.
- If a close match exists, add your experience and upvote it rather than creating several duplicates.
- If no match exists, submit one concise report with the Windows version/build, date or trigger, expected and observed results, and numbered reproduction steps.
- Attach screenshots or a recording that shows the failure without exposing passwords, personal documents, or private messages.
Feedback Hub is for reporting and tracking, not immediate guided support. Microsoft directs users who need immediate help to Get Help or Support. Read Diagnostics, feedback, and privacy in Windows before consenting to optional diagnostic data. Microsoft notes that optional data can include crash-time device memory state and might unintentionally contain portions of a file that was open when the crash occurred. Decide what you are comfortable sharing, especially on a work computer.
What not to do
- Do not edit the registry or delete system folders based on a generic internet tip.
- Do not disable antivirus, firewall, or other security protections as a first-line “fix.”
- Do not install third-party driver or repair utilities when Windows’ documented tools fit the evidence.
- Do not change multiple services, drivers, and settings at once; you will lose the ability to tell which change mattered.
- Do not describe a symptom as a confirmed Microsoft known issue without a matching version, hardware context, and reproducible evidence.
- Do not assume a restore point, reset, or recovery command is equivalent to a file backup.
When to stop and seek help
Stop experimenting when the computer is losing data, showing signs of storage failure, overheating, repeated blue screens, or failing to boot after a recovery change. Preserve the incident record, protect the backup, and use Microsoft Support or the device manufacturer’s support channel. Give the technician your Windows build, exact error text, reproduction steps, timeline, tests performed, and the result of each test. That evidence is more useful than a list of unrelated commands you tried.
A safe resolution is not always a command that makes the symptom disappear. Sometimes the correct outcome is identifying a conflicting startup service, reverting one documented driver change, restoring a known-good system state, or producing a reproducible report that Microsoft can investigate. Keeping the diagnosis separate from the repair is what prevents a long-standing problem from becoming a larger one.
