You can buy the Amulet of Mara from Maramal in Riften for 200 gold after asking him about marriage, or earn one during Dinya Balu’s quest, The Book of Love. To use it for marriage dialogue, equip it from your inventory. You must also have discussed marriage with Maramal and meet the chosen NPC’s personal requirements.
Buy the Amulet of Mara from Maramal
- Go to Riften and find Maramal, a priest of Mara. He may be at the Temple of Mara or the Bee and Barb; no dependable time-of-day schedule is established. (Source)
- Ask him about Mara and marriage in Skyrim. Let him explain the marriage custom; this conversation is important both for the purchase option and for later marriage-related dialogue.
- After the conversation, buy the Amulet of Mara from him for 200 gold. The price is listed by the Elder Scrolls Wiki; its publication year is not stated. (Source)
Earn one through The Book of Love
- Speak with Dinya Balu in the Temple of Mara in Riften and ask about Mara’s blessing to begin The Book of Love. (Quest details)
- Complete the quest’s stages: help Fastred in Ivarstead, assist with a matter in Markarth, then wear the amulet while dealing with the long-dead lovers Ruki and Fenrig near Gjukar’s Monument.
- Dinya gives you an Amulet of Mara during the quest. Completing it also awards Agent of Mara. (Quest details)
Equip the amulet
- Open your inventory and go to the apparel or jewelry section.
- Select the Amulet of Mara and choose Equip. Carrying the amulet is not the same as wearing it.
Once equipped, it can enable marriage-related conversation with eligible NPCs, but it does not make every character available to marry. You must first have discussed marriage with Maramal, and the NPC may require you to complete a personal quest or favor. (Marriage requirements)

If marriage dialogue does not appear
- Check that it is equipped. An amulet in your inventory alone does not meet the wearing requirement.
- Speak to Maramal about marriage. His explanation of Skyrim’s marriage customs is a prerequisite for the intended dialogue.
- Check the NPC’s requirements. The character may require a quest or favor before becoming eligible.
- If you are trying to buy the amulet, finish Maramal’s explanation first. The purchase option follows that conversation.
