To download a few movies, select them in Google Drive on a computer and choose Download. To keep a local copy of My Drive, use Drive for desktop’s Mirror files option—after checking that your computer has enough free space. For an archive of Drive data, use Google Takeout. No single method guarantees a download of every movie you can see: shared drives, owner permissions, and work or school account policies can limit what is available.
Choose the right way to download your movies
| Method | Best for | What happens on your device | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive in a web browser | Downloading a few selected movies | Downloaded files use local storage. | The owner can disable downloads for viewers or commenters. Browser problems or a temporary download-volume restriction can also interfere. Google Drive Help |
| Drive for desktop: streaming | Browsing a large library while conserving disk space | Files stay primarily in the cloud unless you make them available offline. | Files not made available offline need an internet connection. Shared Drives can only be streamed. Google Drive Help |
| Drive for desktop: mirroring | Keeping a local copy of My Drive | A full copy of My Drive uses local disk space. | Mirroring applies to My Drive, not Shared Drives. Check available space and the destination folder before switching. Google Drive Help |
| Google Takeout | Creating an archive or transferring Drive data | The archive needs enough space at its destination. | Some work or school account data may be unavailable; exports have size limits and may not include changes made while the archive is being created. Google Takeout Help |
| Drive app on Android | Downloading an individual file to a phone | The file uses device storage. | The Download option is unavailable when Data Saver is enabled. Google Drive Help |
Find movie files in Google Drive
First, switch to the Google account that owns the movies or has access to them. Search Drive for a movie’s filename or browse the folders where you saved it. If your collection spans multiple accounts or shared drives, check each relevant account and location; a search in one account does not establish that you have found every movie you can access elsewhere.
Drive’s download instructions cover selecting files, but do not promise that a very large selection will finish as one uninterrupted download. For a large library, mirroring or Takeout may be a better fit than trying to download everything in one browser action.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Download selected movies in a browser
- On a computer, open Google Drive and locate the movie files.
- Select one file, or select multiple files by holding Command on Mac or Ctrl on Windows while clicking.
- Right-click the selection and choose Download.
- Check your browser’s download location for the completed files.
Google says you cannot drag a Drive file or folder directly onto your desktop. If you select Google-native files such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Vids, Drive may offer export formats rather than downloading an identical native file. That is generally not relevant to ordinary video files.

Keep a local copy with Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop offers streaming and mirroring for My Drive. Streaming keeps files primarily online and uses little local storage; mirroring stores a full My Drive copy in a folder on your computer and makes it available offline. The trade-off is straightforward: mirroring needs enough disk space for the files, while streamed files need an internet connection unless you make them available offline. Google’s streaming and mirroring comparison says Shared Drives are stream-only.
Before you switch to mirroring
- Check how much free space your computer has and whether it can hold your My Drive files.
- Confirm the local folder where the mirrored files will appear.
- Remember that the setting covers My Drive, not Shared Drives.
For a selection of movies rather than all of My Drive, streaming may be more practical: you can make only chosen files available offline. Offline copies use local disk space. On a desktop, streamed files are accessible in Finder or File Explorer while Drive for desktop is running. Google’s offline-access instructions explain how the behavior differs by mode.

Use Google Takeout for a Drive archive
Google Takeout exports Drive files and folders along with other supported Google data. For Drive, the export includes current file versions and versions marked “Keep forever,” among other Drive information. Google recommends downloading and viewing Takeout archives on a desktop computer; the archive includes an archive_browser.html file with information about its formats and contents. Google’s Takeout guidance describes the export.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTakeout is suited to archiving or transferring data, not necessarily to quickly saving a couple of movies. Google warns that some work or school account data may not be available, export attempts over maximum size limits may fail, and changes made after the export request may not appear in the archive. If an export fails, Google suggests trying again, selecting fewer products, or requesting smaller archive sizes.

Download a movie on Android
- Open the Google Drive app and find the movie.
- Tap More beside the file.
- Tap Download.
This is a per-file download workflow, not a phone equivalent of mirroring all of My Drive. If the Download option is missing, check whether Android Data Saver is enabled; Google says that setting makes the option unavailable.

- Download is missing: The owner may have disabled downloading for people with view or comment access. Ask the owner for permission or an authorized copy; do not try to bypass the restriction. Google Drive Help
- Drive Web downloads fail in Chrome: Blocked third-party cookies can prevent Drive from communicating with Google’s secure download server. Google suggests allowing cookies for Drive if needed. Browser extensions can also interfere; test with extensions off, then re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict. Google Drive Help
- You see “Too many users have viewed or downloaded this file recently”: Google says this temporary restriction typically resets within 24 hours. Wait and try again rather than attempting to evade the restriction. Google Drive Help
- You cannot make a file available offline: Check free device space, your internet connection, and file permissions. Google Drive Help
There is an important difference between downloading and offline access. A downloaded movie is saved locally. With Drive’s offline feature, a selected streamed file is also stored locally for offline use; it still takes space. If you disconnect your account from Drive, streamed offline files are removed, while mirrored files remain on your device. Google Drive Help
