To download images from a web page, open it in Chrome or Firefox, let the content you want load, then use a browser image-downloader extension to scan the page. Review the results, filter out icons and duplicates, choose the images you need, and download them. “All images” means the files the tool can detect on the loaded page—not necessarily every image the site uses or every original-size file.

What an image downloader can—and cannot—find

A browser image downloader scans a page for image elements and image URLs that are exposed to the browser. It usually presents the results as a grid so you can inspect and select files rather than saving everything blindly. The Chrome Web Store listing for Image Downloader describes browsing pictures on the active webpage and offers controls for filtering and managing downloads.

The scan is not a guarantee that every visual asset used by a site is downloadable. It may miss images that have not loaded yet, require a login, sit inside a protected viewer, or are rendered into a canvas or video rather than exposed as ordinary image URLs. Authentication, hotlink restrictions, and other site controls can also prevent access to a file. Treat the results as a list to review, not a complete inventory of the site’s image storage.

Why some images are missing

  • Lazy loading: A page may load images only as you scroll. Scroll through the sections you need and wait for the images to appear before scanning.
  • Login or access controls: The browser must have access to the content. An extension cannot make a private or protected image public.
  • Non-image rendering: Content drawn into canvas or displayed as video may not appear as a downloadable image URL.
  • Site restrictions: A visible image may use a protected URL or hotlink rules that stop a direct download.

Download page images in Chrome

  1. Open the page and let it load. Visit the target page in Chrome. Wait for the initial content to finish loading; scroll through lazy-loaded sections you want included, pausing so their images appear.
  2. Install an extension from the official Chrome Web Store. The Image Downloader extension listing says it can browse pictures on the active webpage, filter by size, dimensions, or URL, remove duplicates, rename files, save to a subfolder, and download in the background. Review the extension’s permissions before installing.
  3. Run it on the active page. Click the extension icon while the page you want to scan is open. Review its thumbnail grid; do not assume that every result is a useful photograph.
  4. Filter and select. Use dimension and URL filters to remove tiny icons, tracking pixels, avatars, and duplicate thumbnails. Select only the images you intend to save.
  5. Choose the best available image URL. If the extension exposes an original-image URL as well as a thumbnail, prefer the original when you need the larger file. A larger-looking preview does not by itself prove that the URL points to an original.
  6. Start the download and check its destination. Chrome’s Download All Images listing says selected files can be saved to the default directory or a specified subfolder. Check Chrome’s download settings if you need to confirm or change the default location, or if the browser repeatedly prompts you to choose where files go.

Choosing filters that help

  • Dimensions or minimum size: Exclude tiny assets such as interface icons and tracking pixels. Set the threshold to match the content you want; logos and small illustrations can be legitimate images too.
  • URL: Narrow the list when you recognize a site’s image path or want to omit a category of assets. Avoid excluding a URL pattern until you have checked what it contains.
  • Duplicate removal: Useful when a page presents the same image in several places or exposes repeated variants. Compare dimensions and URLs if two similar-looking files may have different resolutions.
  • Thumbnail review: Use the visual grid to identify relevant content before downloading. This reduces clutter and lowers the chance of saving incidental page assets.

Find the original or full-size image

Pages commonly display a resized thumbnail while linking to a larger file, but not every page exposes the original in a way an extension can identify. When a tool provides both a preview and an original URL, select the original URL for a full-size copy. Imageye documents copying original URLs and converting WebP, JPG, and PNG files; see its product information.

  1. Compare the listed dimensions and file URLs for visually identical results.
  2. Prefer the result with the larger dimensions when you need more pixels, provided it is actually the source image rather than an unrelated variant.
  3. If the extension offers an original-URL action, use it and inspect the destination before downloading.
  4. After saving, open the file and check its dimensions and format. A conversion option can change the format, but it does not restore image detail absent from the source.

Some sites generate multiple responsive sizes or serve images through scripts, access controls, or protected viewers. In those cases, the largest URL visible to an extension may still not be the site’s original upload. Do not treat “full size” as a guarantee unless the page or its image source establishes that.

Use an image downloader in Firefox

Firefox users can install Mozilla’s Image Downloader add-on. Its listing supports downloading one, multiple, or all images and conversion to JPEG, PNG, or WebP. The general workflow is the same as in Chrome: load and scroll the page, open the add-on on the active tab, inspect its results, select the images you need, and download them.

Store listings and add-on features can change. Before installing, check the current listing, supported browser, permissions, and the controls available in the version offered to you.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to save a visual record of a webpage rather than obtain its individual image files, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one API request. It is not an image-downloader replacement: a screenshot captures the rendered page, not a folder of the page’s original image assets.

For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of the rendered page as a WebP file. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Check permissions and protect your privacy

A browser extension needs permissions to interact with pages or downloads, and those permissions matter because it may process page content. Install extensions from the official Chrome Web Store or Mozilla Add-ons, review what access they request, and run a scanner only on pages you trust. Avoid an extension requesting unrelated access without a clear explanation.

Chrome’s extension documentation explains that extension resources and page access are permission-controlled, and that default restrictions reduce fingerprinting and exploitation risk: Chrome extension network requests and permissions. The Image Downloader vendor documentation says the extension reads page content when the user clicks its icon: Image Downloader documentation. Check the current store listing and vendor documentation before installation, since permissions and product behavior can change.

Copyright: downloading is not permission to reuse

Saving a picture to your device and having permission to republish it are different things. The U.S. Copyright Office says, “If you want to use someone else’s photo from the internet, you need to get permission.” See its fair-use FAQ and visual artists guidance. Copyright owners generally control reproduction, distribution, adaptation, and public display of protected visual works.

Before using a downloaded picture in a post, product, advertisement, presentation, or client project:

  • Check the page’s stated license and the creator’s terms.
  • Check any stock-service restrictions if the image comes from a stock library.
  • Keep the creator, license information, and source URL alongside the file.
  • When the terms are unclear, ask the rights holder or use an image that is explicitly licensed for your intended use or in the public domain.

The ability to copy, capture, or save a file technically does not establish that its owner authorized distribution; the Copyright Office discusses this distinction in its website-content circular. Fair use is determined by the circumstances, not a fixed percentage or word-count rule, as the Copyright Office explains in its fair-use FAQ.

Troubleshooting common download problems

Problem Likely cause What to try
The extension finds only a few images Images lower on the page have not loaded, or the page uses content the scanner cannot expose as ordinary image URLs. Scroll through the relevant sections, wait for images to appear, then scan again. Images in canvas, video, protected viewers, or gated content may remain unavailable.
The results contain icons, avatars, or tiny files The page includes interface assets and other small images alongside its main content. Filter by dimensions or URL, remove duplicates, and review the thumbnail grid before selecting files.
The saved file is a small thumbnail The page exposes a thumbnail URL, or the chosen result was a resized variant. Look for an original-image URL or a result with larger dimensions. Verify the downloaded file’s dimensions; an extension cannot recreate detail that was never supplied.
A download is blocked or fails The image may require access the browser does not have, or the site may restrict direct file requests. Confirm that the page is accessible in the same browser session, then try the image link offered by the page or extension. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.
Chrome keeps asking where to save files Chrome’s download location or prompt behavior may be configured to ask for each download. Review Chrome’s download settings, choose a default destination if that suits your workflow, and check the extension’s subfolder option.
The extension asks for broad or surprising permissions Its requested access may exceed what you expect for scanning a page. Read the official store listing and vendor explanation. Do not install or use it on sensitive pages if the access is not clearly justified.
A downloaded picture cannot be reused as expected Possessing a copy does not grant a reuse license. Check the creator’s terms, obtain permission, or select an image with a license that covers the intended use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an image downloader get images from a page that requires a login?

Only if the browser session can access the image and the site makes it available to the extension. A login requirement or protected viewer may prevent the file from appearing in the scan.

Does converting WebP to JPG make an image higher quality?

No. Conversion changes the file format, not the detail present in the source image.

Can I use a downloaded image in a commercial project?

Only when the applicable license or permission allows that use. A download alone does not grant commercial reuse rights.
