To download a filed return from TurboTax Online, sign in with the Intuit account you used to file, open Tax Home, scroll to Your tax returns & documents, choose the tax year, and select Download/print return (PDF). TurboTax says online returns are available for the past seven years, but the return must still be in the account you’re using.
Download a filed return from TurboTax Online
- Sign in to TurboTax with the same Intuit user ID used to file the return.
- Open Tax Home and scroll to Your tax returns & documents.
- Select the tax year you need.
- Choose Download/print return (PDF) and save the file to your device.
TurboTax’s support article, updated August 17, 2026, says, “You can access returns for the past seven years.” That is the stated online access period, not a guarantee that every return will appear in every account. See TurboTax’s prior-year return instructions.
If you are already working in TurboTax, the Documents menu may also offer a tax-year dropdown and Download tax PDF. Labels and navigation can vary by product and tax year.
Choose the right file type
| File | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Reading, printing, or providing a copy when requested | A practical document format; it is not the editable tax-software data file. | |
| .tax | Continuing work in TurboTax | Tax-software data, not a general-purpose document. TurboTax provides instructions for downloading a prior-year .tax file from Your tax returns & documents. |
For a return copy that includes government and TurboTax worksheets, TurboTax describes opening the relevant year’s return workflow, then choosing Tax Tools > Print Center and Print, save or preview this year’s return. You can select whether to include worksheets. The exact route can differ by product and year. Check TurboTax’s instructions for your product.

If the return is missing from your account
- Check the Intuit account. You may have filed with a different user ID or have more than one account. Sign out and try the account associated with that filing.
- Consider whether another filed return replaced it. TurboTax describes cases where a later return in an account replaced an earlier one; it says the earlier return cannot be recovered there and directs users to the IRS for a copy. TurboTax’s support page explains this limitation.
- If you used TurboTax Desktop, search the computer where you prepared the return. Desktop returns are saved locally by default rather than stored in your TurboTax Online account. Check TurboTax/Documents folders, the computer’s files, and any backup drive or cloud backup you maintained.
TurboTax Business
For Business Online, TurboTax’s guidance says to sign in to the Intuit Account, open Documents, select the year, and download the PDF. If the document is absent, the support article describes requesting data through Data & Privacy > Download; TurboTax says that request can take up to 15 days. For Desktop Business, locate the return file on the Windows computer and use the new return’s file browser to transfer it. Verify the current Business steps with TurboTax, since product navigation can change.
Use IRS records if TurboTax cannot provide the return
The right IRS document depends on what the lender, agency, or other recipient will accept. A transcript is not the same as a complete photocopy of the filed return.

| IRS record | What it provides | Cost and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Tax return transcript | Most line items from the original Form 1040-series return as filed; it does not show later changes. | Free. Online access is generally for the current and three prior tax years. Older transcript requests may require Form 4506-T. |
| Tax account transcript | Account information, including changes made after filing. | Free. Generally available for the current and nine prior tax years through an Individual Online Account, subject to limitations. |
| Complete copy of the filed federal return | A copy of the return and attachments as originally submitted. | Request with IRS Form 4506. The April 2025 revision lists a $30 fee per return; confirm the current form’s fee, address, and processing time before sending. |
The IRS states, “A transcript isn’t a photocopy of your return.” Read the IRS transcript guidance for record types and ordering options. If you need a complete copy, use the current IRS Form 4506 and its instructions. A transcript may be accepted instead of a photocopy in some situations, so ask the recipient before paying for a complete copy. The IRS explains copy requests and transcript alternatives.
Downloading a filed return is not preparing a prior-year return
If you never filed the return and want to prepare it now, that is a separate task from downloading a copy of a filed return. TurboTax’s supported prior-year filing options change by filing season; consult its current prior-year filing guidance. Prior-year filing software does not retrieve a return that was already filed.
