Old Samsung photos may still be on the original phone, tucked into a hidden album or Trash, stored in OneDrive or another cloud account, or included in a backup. Start by checking the old phone if you can still unlock it, then check the specific account and backup services you used. The right route depends on whether you want to view a photo, restore a deleted one, or make a separate copy.
Start with the old Galaxy phone
If the phone still works and you can unlock it, look there before resetting, trading it in, or changing accounts. Open Gallery and check both Pictures and Albums, including Downloads. If a photo appears in My Files but not in Gallery, check for hidden albums and hidden files; Samsung also recommends checking Trash in both Gallery and My Files. Menu names and availability can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s Gallery troubleshooting guide covers photos that do not display in Gallery.
Restore a photo from Gallery Trash
On supported Galaxy devices, open Gallery > Menu > Trash, select the image, and choose Restore. Samsung says Gallery Trash keeps deleted files for 30 days; after that, they are permanently deleted from that Trash. The retention period does not mean every missing photo will be there. Samsung’s instructions for managing Gallery Trash describe the steps.

Look in OneDrive if you used Samsung Gallery sync
The direct Samsung Gallery–OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026. That change stopped the integration; it did not delete copies that had already been uploaded to OneDrive. Microsoft Support says, “Your OneDrive photos and videos are still accessible at onedrive.com or through all your devices where OneDrive is installed.” Open OneDrive or onedrive.com and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the old sync. Samsung and Microsoft accounts can be different. Microsoft’s guidance for photos previously synced with OneDrive explains where to access them.
Samsung says previously synced photos can be downloaded to a device through OneDrive. If a cloud copy was deleted, check the OneDrive Recycle bin, in the app or on the web. Samsung says deleted OneDrive photos and videos remain there for 93 days. This is separate from Gallery Trash. Samsung’s OneDrive photo guidance covers access and recovery.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Back up new photos to OneDrive
To keep backing up new photos, use OneDrive’s Camera backup rather than expecting the ended Gallery integration to continue. In OneDrive, choose the correct Microsoft account, enable Camera backup, grant photo and video access, and check that the account has available storage. The exact labels can vary by app version and device.

Samsung Cloud
If you enabled Samsung Cloud backup on the old phone, check whether a relevant backup is available. Samsung documents this restore route: Settings > Samsung account > Samsung Cloud > Restore data. Select an available backup and check its contents before relying on it; the presence of a backup service does not establish that a particular photo was included.

Google device backup
Samsung notes that Google device-backup restoration takes place while setting up a new or reset device. Do not reset a working phone just to look for photos unless you have confirmed that a relevant backup exists and understand what the reset and restore will do. A device backup is different from photo-library sync. Samsung’s backup and restore instructions describe the available routes.
Google Gallery Cloud Sync
Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync with Google can show media covered by that sync and lets users choose device folders. It does not make every item in a Google Photos library browseable from Samsung Gallery. Because synced deletions and restoration can affect both apps, check how sync is working before deleting or moving files. Google’s information about Gallery Cloud Sync explains its scope.

Copy photos that are still accessible
If you can open the photo on the old phone, make a separate copy before wiping or handing over the device. Copying preserves accessible files; it cannot retrieve an image that has been permanently deleted and has no surviving copy or backup.

Choose the route that matches what happened
| What you know | Where to look | What the route can do |
|---|---|---|
| The old phone works and can be unlocked | Gallery, Albums, Downloads, hidden files, My Files, and the two Trash locations | Find local files or restore items still in Trash |
| You used Samsung Gallery–OneDrive sync | OneDrive under the Microsoft account used for sync | View or download surviving cloud copies; check OneDrive Recycle bin for deleted items |
| You enabled Samsung Cloud backup | Settings > Samsung account > Samsung Cloud > Restore data | Restore content present in an available backup |
| You have a Google device backup | Device setup on a new or reset phone | Restore content included in that backup during setup |
| You can still open the photo on the phone | Computer, another phone, Quick Share, or compatible USB OTG storage | Make a separate copy of the accessible file |
Before deleting files or resetting a phone, confirm which account and service hold the copy you need and whether the actual photo is present. Cloud sync and device backup are not interchangeable, and menus or services can differ by device, One UI version, country, carrier, and account settings.
When recovery may not be possible
Samsung’s documented routes cover restoring items still in Gallery Trash or OneDrive Recycle bin, and restoring content present in an existing backup. They do not establish a dependable way to retrieve a photo permanently deleted from all relevant Trash locations when no other copy or backup survives. If the photo is not on the phone, in a cloud account, in Trash, or in a backup, avoid assuming that a recovery method will bring it back.
