There is no single public command that guarantees every subpage of a website. Start with the sitemap named in robots.txt, then follow sitemap indexes, check Search Console if you manage the site, sample Google with site: searches, and crawl internal links. Reconcile those results. For a truly authoritative inventory—including orphaned, private, or unpublished URLs—you need authorized owner-side CMS, database, or server data.
What “all subpages” can mean
Before collecting URLs, define the inventory you need. These sets are different:
- Published sitemap URLs: the addresses a site operator has chosen to advertise to crawlers.
- Linked URLs: pages reachable by following links from your chosen starting points.
- Google-known URLs: pages Google has discovered, crawled, or indexed.
- Owner-side URLs: records in the CMS, database, route source, or server configuration.
A public method can reveal only what is exposed to it. Login-protected, unpublished, orphaned, blocked, or otherwise unreachable pages may never appear in a sitemap, crawl, or search result.

Method 1: Find the sitemap through robots.txt
- Open
https://example.com/robots.txt, replacing the host with your target website. - Search for one or more lines beginning
Sitemap:. Use the complete URL after the colon; do not assume the file is at/sitemap.xml. - Open each sitemap URL. If it is a sitemap index, open every child sitemap listed inside it.
- Collect the URLs in each
<loc>element and remove duplicates.
A sitemap is the best first source because it is a structured list intentionally published for discovery. It is not a guarantee that every listed URL will be crawled or indexed, and it may omit pages the owner did not include.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Quick command-line inspection
curl -L https://example.com/robots.txt
curl -L https://example.com/sitemap.xml
Save the response and inspect for Sitemap:, <sitemapindex>, <sitemap>, and <url> elements. Large sites commonly split URL data across multiple child files.
Method 2: Use Google Search Console when you manage the site
Search Console provides Google’s perspective, not the website’s complete database.
Sitemaps report
In Search Console, open the property, choose Sitemaps, and review submitted sitemap URLs, fetch status, and processing details. Owner permissions are required to submit through this report or its API. A sitemap can also be advertised in robots.txt without submitting it here. Fetching a sitemap and crawling its listed URLs are separate events; crawling time varies.
Page indexing report
Open Indexing → Pages to review URLs Google has crawled and indexed, with filters for submitted and known pages. This report can expose URLs discovered through sources other than your sitemap, but it is still an index view. Some valid URLs should not be indexed, and discovery does not guarantee indexing.

Method 3: Sample Google with site: searches
Run queries such as:
site:example.com
site:example.com/docs
site:example.com/blog
The first targets a host; the others narrow the sample to a path. This is useful for finding indexed pages and spotting sections missing from your sitemap. Google does not guarantee that a site: result contains every indexed URL, so do not treat the result count as an export. Copy discovered addresses into your working list and deduplicate them.
Method 4: Crawl internal links
A link crawler starts at one or more pages, downloads permitted HTML, extracts links, and repeats within the chosen host. Start at the home page and important section pages, then record canonical URLs, redirects, status codes, and the referring page.
What a crawl adds
- Pages linked in navigation, articles, XML rendered by the application, or other public HTML.
- URLs absent from the sitemap but reachable through links.
- Broken links, redirect chains, duplicate paths, and sections that need cleanup.
What a crawl misses
- Orphaned pages with no reachable internal link.
- Login-protected or permission-gated content.
- Pages blocked, unavailable, rendered only after application actions, or outside your starting scope.
Respect the site’s access rules and rate-limit requests. Crawling a site you do not control does not grant permission to bypass authentication or other controls.

| Source | Represents | Ownership required | Can find orphaned URLs? | Reliability boundary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sitemap or index | URLs the publisher lists | No | Sometimes, if listed | May omit URLs; listing does not ensure crawling or indexing |
| Search Console Page indexing | Google-known, crawled, and indexed URLs | Yes, for the property | Only if Google discovered them | Google’s view, not the site database |
site: search |
Approximate indexed sample | No | Only if indexed and returned | Results are not guaranteed to be exhaustive |
| Internal-link crawl | Reachable public links | Usually no | No | Limited by reachability, access, and crawl scope |
| CMS, database, or server source | Owner-authoritative records | Yes | Yes, if records exist | Requires authorization and interpretation of unpublished routes |
Compare sets with spreadsheet joins or a script: sitemap-only URLs may be unlinked; crawl-only URLs may be missing from the sitemap; Google-only URLs may come from external links or historical discovery. Investigate each difference rather than deleting it automatically.
Finding pages that are not linked in navigation
Navigation is only one link source. Check all sitemap files first, crawl contextual links, inspect Search Console’s known URLs, and compare the results. A page absent from navigation can still be linked in an article, feed, footer, JavaScript-rendered interface, or external site. If it is absent from every public source, ask the owner or inspect authorized CMS and server data; no public scan can prove that no such page exists.
Robots.txt is not privacy protection
robots.txt communicates crawler access preferences; it does not authenticate users. A disallowed URL can still be indexed if other sites link to it. Protect sensitive material with authentication or authorization controls, not a robots rule. Treat any URL discovered in a robots file, sitemap, log, or search result as potentially public.

How many pages need a sitemap?
Google describes a “small” site as about 500 pages or fewer that the owner wants to appear in search. For a small, comprehensively linked site, Google says a sitemap may be unnecessary. Larger or more complex sites generally benefit from one, but inclusion remains a discovery signal rather than a crawl or indexing promise.

Troubleshooting
No Sitemap line in robots.txt
Try the site’s documented URL, common paths such as /sitemap.xml, and Search Console if you own the property. Do not infer that no sitemap exists merely because robots.txt does not name one.
The sitemap returns HTML or an error
Check the exact URL, redirects, compression handling, HTTPS certificate, and server response. A sitemap index may be valid XML even when it contains no page URLs directly; follow its child files.
Google shows fewer pages than the sitemap
This is expected: discovery, crawling, and indexing are different. Review Page indexing reasons and verify that canonical, access, and content policies are intentional.

When your workflow needs screenshots of discovered URLs, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options, then run:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

When only owner data is complete enough
If the requirement is a definitive site-wide inventory, obtain authorized exports from the CMS, routing system, database, deployment artifacts, or server logs. Confirm whether the export includes drafts, deleted records, localized variants, redirects, and authenticated routes. Public sitemaps, Google reports, and crawlers can validate discoverability, but they cannot certify that the owner-side inventory contains no additional URLs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Google list every page on a website?
No. Search results and the site: operator are approximate views of indexed content, not a guaranteed URL export.
What is the fastest first check?
Open the host’s robots.txt, follow every advertised sitemap and sitemap index, then reconcile those URLs with a link crawl.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I find private or orphaned pages?
Use authorized CMS, database, route, or server-side data. Public discovery methods cannot reliably expose pages with no public path or link.
