There is no single command that reveals every URL that exists on a website. To get a useful answer, separate three sets: URLs that exist in the site’s software or database, URLs discoverable by following links, and URLs Google knows about or has indexed. Use a sitemap and an internal-link crawl for a site inventory; use Google Search Console to see Google’s reported status. A site: search is only a quick sample.
First decide what “all pages” means
A website can contain URLs that are not linked anywhere, URLs blocked from crawling, duplicate URL variants, private pages, redirects, and pages that Google has discovered but chosen not to index. Consequently, an inventory of the site and an inventory of Google’s index will not normally have the same size.
| Method | What it shows | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
site:example.com search |
A sample of URLs Google knows about | A complete inventory or an exact count |
| XML sitemap | URLs the site owner submits for discovery | That every listed URL exists, is crawlable, or is indexed |
| Internal-link crawl | URLs reachable from a selected starting point | Pages with no discoverable link, or content rendered only after complex browser actions |
| Search Console Page indexing report | Google’s reported known, submitted, crawled, and indexed URL status | Every URL that exists on your server |
| URL Inspection | Google’s details and a live test for one URL | A guarantee that the URL will appear for a particular query |
If you need “every record in our CMS,” export the CMS or database directly. The procedures below find the public web-facing sets and show where they differ.

1. Run a quick Google sample
Use a site-restricted query
Search for site:example.com, replacing the domain with yours. Add a path or phrase to narrow the sample, such as site:example.com/blog or site:example.com "pricing". Open several results and check whether they are current, canonical pages on your domain.

Do not treat the result count as your page total
Google documents the site: operator as a way to see sample pages. Search-result counts are approximate, can change between queries, and may include multiple URL variants. They are not a complete site inventory. Use this step to spot obvious omissions, old URLs, or unexpected subdomains, then move to the sitemap and Search Console.
2. Inspect the sitemap and sitemap index
Find the declared sitemap
Request https://example.com/robots.txt and look for one or more Sitemap: lines. Also check the CMS or hosting dashboard: many platforms generate a sitemap automatically. A site may publish a sitemap index that points to several child sitemaps.
Read the URL entries
Download each XML file and extract the <loc> value. Record the URL, its host, and (if present) its last-modified value. Treat the list as the owner’s intended discovery set, not as proof of publication. A stale sitemap can contain deleted URLs; a maintenance error can omit live pages.

Google’s sitemap guidance limits one sitemap to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs. Split larger collections into multiple files and reference them from a sitemap index. Google’s sitemap overview uses about 500 pages as a practical definition of a small site when deciding whether a sitemap is necessary; that figure refers to pages the owner wants to appear in search, not every URL the software can generate.
Compare, rather than blindly “fix,” differences
- Sitemap URL, not found in a crawl: it may be orphaned, blocked by navigation, or rendered only through JavaScript.
- Crawled URL, absent from the sitemap: it may be intentionally excluded, newly published, or evidence that the sitemap is incomplete.
- Many parameterized URLs: decide whether they represent useful distinct content or duplicate variations before adding them.
Google states that listing a URL in a sitemap does not guarantee crawling or indexing. Keep the sitemap limited to canonical URLs that you want considered.

3. Crawl the site from its links
Set a responsible crawl scope
Start at the homepage, then follow internal links in navigation, XML sitemaps, category pages, and HTML pages. Stay on the intended host, normalize fragments, record redirects and HTTP status codes, and set a maximum page count. Respect the site’s robots.txt, use a descriptive user agent, and add a delay or concurrency limit so the audit does not overload the server. A basic crawler sees server-delivered HTML; it may miss links created only after a browser executes JavaScript.
Run this small standard-library crawler
The script below follows same-host links, removes fragment identifiers, and writes a CSV-style report. It is deliberately conservative: it does not bypass authentication, submit forms, or ignore robots rules.
#!/usr/bin/env python3
import csv, sys, time
from collections import deque
from html.parser import HTMLParser
from urllib.parse import urljoin, urlparse, urldefrag
from urllib.request import Request, urlopen
class Links(HTMLParser):
def __init__(self):
super().__init__()
self.hrefs = []
def handle_starttag(self, tag, attrs):
if tag.lower() == 'a':
for key, value in attrs:
if key.lower() == 'href' and value:
self.hrefs.append(value)
def crawl(start, limit=1000, delay=0.25):
start = urldefrag(start)[0]
host = urlparse(start).netloc.lower()
queue, seen, rows = deque([start]), set(), []
while queue and len(seen) < limit:
url = queue.popleft()
if url in seen:
continue
seen.add(url)
try:
req = Request(url, headers={'User-Agent': 'InventoryCrawler/1.0'})
with urlopen(req, timeout=20) as response:
final = response.geturl()
status = getattr(response, 'status', '')
ctype = response.headers.get('Content-Type', '')
data = response.read(2_000_000)
rows.append((url, status, final, ctype))
if 'text/html' in ctype:
parser = Links()
parser.feed(data.decode('utf-8', errors='replace'))
for href in parser.hrefs:
child = urldefrag(urljoin(final, href))[0]
parsed = urlparse(child)
if parsed.scheme in ('http', 'https') and parsed.netloc.lower() == host:
if child not in seen:
queue.append(child)
except Exception as exc:
rows.append((url, 'ERROR', str(exc), ''))
time.sleep(delay)
return rows
if __name__ == '__main__':
start = sys.argv[1] if len(sys.argv) > 1 else 'https://example.com/'
with open('crawl.csv', 'w', newline='', encoding='utf-8') as fh:
writer = csv.writer(fh)
writer.writerow(['requested_url', 'status', 'final_url_or_error', 'content_type'])
writer.writerows(crawl(start))
print('Wrote crawl.csv')
Run it with python3 crawl.py https://example.com/. Before a production audit, add robots.txt parsing, retry/backoff handling, canonical extraction, and a persistent queue. For JavaScript-heavy applications, use a crawler that renders pages in a real browser and document that extra coverage separately.
Use the crawl as an evidence set
Filter the report into successful HTML pages, redirects, errors, non-HTML assets, and URLs containing query parameters. Check canonical tags, noindex directives, and response codes where your crawler supports them. A 200 response means the server returned content; it does not mean Google will index that content.
4. Check Google’s reported URL status in Search Console
Review the Page indexing report
In Google Search Console, open Indexing → Pages (the Page indexing report). It separates URLs Google knows about from URLs submitted in sitemaps and groups pages by indexed and not-indexed reasons. Export the report when you need to compare it with your crawl and sitemap. Its scope is Google’s systems, not a database dump of your site.

Inspect an individual URL
Paste a URL into the Search Console URL Inspection field. Review whether crawling is allowed, whether Google fetched the page, whether indexing is permitted, and which canonical URL Google selected. Use the live test when the page has changed and you need a current fetch. An “indexed” result is not a promise that the page will be served for every search.
Understand the stages
Discovery, crawling, indexing, and serving are separate stages. Google can discover a URL but not crawl it, crawl it but exclude it, or index it while selecting another canonical. Google’s official guide puts the limitation plainly: “Google doesn’t guarantee that it will crawl, index, or serve your page, even if your page follows the Google Search Essentials.”
5. Reconcile the three lists
Put the sitemap URLs, crawl URLs, and Search Console exports into a spreadsheet or database keyed by normalized URL. Add columns for HTTP status, final redirect target, canonical, robots/indexing directives, sitemap membership, crawl discovery, and Search Console state.
| Finding | Likely interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| In crawl and sitemap, indexed | Normal public page | Check canonical and freshness |
| In sitemap, not in crawl | Orphaned, blocked, or JavaScript-only link | Open it directly; inspect robots and navigation |
| In crawl, not in sitemap | Missing sitemap entry or intentional exclusion | Decide whether it is a canonical page worth submitting |
| Known to Google, not indexed | Duplicate, blocked, low-value, or otherwise excluded URL | Read the exact Page indexing reason and inspect the canonical |
| Redirect or error | URL is not the final content location | Update internal links and sitemap to the final URL |
Do not inflate the count by adding tracking parameters, fragments, or duplicate host variants. Conversely, do not delete a URL solely because it is absent from Google: it may be a valid page that is new, private, deliberately noindexed, or simply not yet discovered.
Or skip the browser setup
If you already have the URLs and need clean visual captures for an audit, documentation set, or regression check, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one GET request. It is not a substitute for a sitemap or crawl: it captures a URL you provide. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options. Replace the example URL with one from your reconciled list.

“My site: search shows fewer pages.”
That is expected: the operator is a sample and Google may omit duplicates or pages it has not discovered. Compare the sitemap, crawl, and Page indexing report instead of chasing the displayed count.
“The sitemap returns 404 or an empty file.”
Check the exact path in robots.txt and your CMS settings. Confirm that the response is XML, not an HTML login page, and inspect a sitemap index for child files. Regenerate it after publishing or deleting pages.
Recommended Free Tools
“The crawler finds far fewer URLs than the CMS.”
Look for orphan records, pagination controls, JavaScript-generated links, authentication, host differences such as www, and crawl limits. Add legitimate navigation or use an authenticated, rendering-capable audit only when the content is intended to be public.
“Search Console says a page is excluded.”
Open the exact reason. Common classes include duplicate/canonical selection, a noindex directive, crawl blocking, soft errors, or a page Google has not yet crawled. Fix only a condition you actually want changed; some exclusions are intentional.

“URL Inspection selects another canonical.”
Compare canonical tags, redirects, internal links, sitemap entries, and near-duplicate content. Make the preferred URL consistent across those signals, then request a new crawl when appropriate.
“The crawl overloads the server or times out.”
Lower concurrency, add delays, cap response sizes, cache results, and crawl in stages. Schedule large audits off-peak and preserve the response log so a transient failure is not mistaken for a missing page.
Performance, reliability, and maintenance
- Start cheap: a
site:sample and sitemap download take minutes, but answer different questions. - Make crawls repeatable: save timestamps, user-agent settings, scope, status codes, redirects, and errors with every run.
- Separate discovery from validation: first collect URLs, then test status, canonical, indexability, and content quality.
- Control variants: normalize fragments and define a policy for query parameters, trailing slashes, case, and alternate hosts before counting.
- Respect access controls: never expose private URLs merely to make a count larger, and do not bypass authentication or robots directives.
- Recheck after releases: compare a new crawl with the previous URL set to catch accidental deletions, redirect chains, and orphaned sections.
For a small brochure site, the sitemap plus a controlled crawl may be sufficient. For a large or frequently changing site, retain historical exports and automate reconciliation so trends—not one volatile Google count—drive decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do URL fragments such as #team create separate pages?
No. Fragments are handled by the browser after the document is fetched and normally should be removed when counting page URLs. A client-side application can still change what a visitor sees, so test its routing separately.
Should private, staging, or preview URLs go in the public sitemap?
No. Keep them protected and out of public discovery systems. If a preview accidentally appears in a crawl or Search Console, remove the exposure and use the appropriate access control or removal process.
How often should I repeat a complete inventory?
Repeat after major navigation, migration, or CMS changes; otherwise choose a cadence that matches publishing volume. Store each run so additions, removals, redirects, and new orphaned URLs are visible over time.
