Start with the online issue your family needs to address, then choose a resource whose age or grade guidance, format, language, and adult involvement fit your child. Free options from UNICEF, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), and Common Sense Education can help families learn together. Pair lessons with practical privacy steps and conversation—not parental controls alone.
Start with the family’s concern
Choose a resource based on the question you want to work through: protecting personal information, unwanted contact, gaming, cyberbullying, social media, screen habits, or a child’s first device. UNICEF’s Digital Parenting hub is a useful starting point for broader questions about healthy digital habits, privacy, safety, and harmful content.
Once you have a focus, compare resources by age or grade fit, topic, format, language, whether an adult should preview or participate, and whether the material suggests a practical next step. An age label is a guide, not a substitute for your judgment about your child’s maturity, experience, and needs.

| Common Sense Education family resources | Families; activities, videos, podcasts, and grade- or topic-based materials | Family discussion, digital literacy, and digital well-being | Confirm the grade guidance and language for each item; some materials are available in English and Spanish. |
| UNICEF Digital Parenting | Families; curated expert explainers and guides | Exploring broad questions about children’s digital lives and healthy habits | Use the hub to identify the specific issue you want to address, then select material focused on it. |
Choose a format your child can use
For younger children or a first device
Try a short video, game, or guided activity, and take part if the material is designed for adult support. Keep the discussion concrete: what information should stay private, what to do when something feels uncomfortable, and which trusted adult the child can ask for help.

For a family conversation
Use a checklist or discussion activity to connect an online-safety idea to your household’s actual habits. Ask open questions about what the child enjoys online and what they would do if they encountered something confusing or upsetting.
For tweens and teens
Look for topic-specific tip sheets, videos, or presentations that address the situations they encounter, such as social media, gaming, privacy, or harmful content. Review the material when appropriate and invite the young person to help decide which advice makes sense for their apps and routines.

NCMEC’s NetSmartz resources are grouped by audience and school grade. NCMEC advises presenters to review materials and select what fits the audience’s prior exposure and needs. That guidance is useful for families too: previewing a resource can reveal whether its examples and level of detail suit your child.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use controls to support digital literacy
Parental controls can help manage content, screen time, and purchases, but they work best alongside family practices and a child’s growing ability to make safe choices. Explain the reason for a boundary and revisit it as the child gains experience. UNICEF recommends using age- and developmentally appropriate language to discuss personal information and digital footprints. In its parent guidance, UNICEF says: “Use age and developmentally appropriate language to explain why we need to keep personal information safe and how what we do online leaves a lasting record or ‘digital footprint’.”
