To broaden the sources represented in Apple News, search for both topics and publishers, follow several sources on subjects you care about, and use story-level feedback to tune recommendations. These controls can expand your followed mix, but they do not guarantee a balanced feed or that every followed source will appear equally.
Follow more than one source on the subjects you care about
Following a topic can surface related coverage, while following several publishers gives you more than one source to draw from. Search by subject as well as by publication—for example, look for a topic and then search for specific news channels that cover it. Apple says followed channels and topics appear in Today. Availability varies by region, so a particular outlet or topic may not appear in your results. Apple’s News quick-start guide notes that Apple News and Apple News+ are not available in every country or region.
On iPhone
- Open News and tap Search.
- Enter a publisher or channel name, or search for a topic.
- Tap the result, then tap Follow.
Repeat the search for other sources and subjects you want represented. Apple’s iPhone guide to searching News documents the search-and-follow flow. Menu labels can vary by iOS version.

On Mac
Apple News for Mac organizes the sidebar into areas including Today, Favorites, Following, and Suggested. If a source or topic is not visible, search for it rather than assuming it is unavailable. The suggestions may reflect whether you follow or block sources and whether you ask for more or fewer similar stories. See Apple’s macOS News guide.

Use story feedback to shape recommendations
On iPhone, go to Today, tap More beneath a headline, then choose Suggest More or Suggest Less. Use this for the kinds of stories you want News to recommend more or less often; it is separate from following a channel or topic. Apple describes this control in its iPhone guide to personalized stories.
Choose the control that matches what you want to change
| Control | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Follow a channel or topic | Adds that source or subject to your followed mix. | You want it represented among the sources and subjects you follow. |
| Suggest More or Suggest Less | Gives feedback about similar story recommendations. | You want to tune recommendations based on a particular story. |
| Block a channel or topic | Excludes it from most of the feed. | You do not want that source or subject appearing in your feed. |
| Stop Suggesting | Hides a suggested story group without blocking its channel or topic. | You want to dismiss a suggested group, not block its source. |
| Restrict Stories | Limits Today to followed channels and removes Top Stories and Trending Stories; Apple says this significantly limits variety. | It is not the setting to use when your goal is a wider range of viewpoints. |
To manage a channel or topic, open it and use its More menu to follow, unfollow, block, or unblock. The options and their effects are described in Apple’s iPhone personalization guide.

Understand what appears in Today
Today is not simply a list of followed sources. Apple says it can also include editor-selected Top Stories, stories suggested by Siri, trending stories, My Sports, and other items. Following more publishers can broaden the followed-source portion of your experience, but it does not establish that the overall catalog or ranking is balanced, comprehensive, or evenly distributed among viewpoints.
Does this require Apple News+?
No subscription requirement for following channels or topics is stated in Apple’s instructions. Apple News+ is an optional paid subscription that adds paid content and features; availability of News and News+ varies by country or region. Check the News getting-started guide for Apple’s availability notes.
