To find a running club near you, check several local sources, then ask the organizer about pace groups, distances, beginner support, meeting details, and cost before you go. “Pace” can mean different things from one group to another, so the best fit is the one whose format and purpose match your current running—not an arbitrary speed target.

Where to find running clubs and group runs

Start with a search for running clubs or group runs in your city or neighborhood, but do not rely on one directory alone. Local running stores and race organizers often know about recurring runs, while online listings can help you build a shortlist.

  • RunningGroups.org lets you browse local listings and filter for categories such as beginner-friendly, no-drop, and all-paces groups. Treat categories as leads, then confirm the details with the club.
  • Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), running-store group runs, local races, Meetup, Strava, and Facebook are other places to look for local groups, as Fleet Feet describes in its guide to finding a running group.
  • If you are in England, England Athletics’ RunTogether offers a club and group finder. Its description says groups are intended to encourage beginner runners and may include sessions from walk-run to longer runs.

Listings and routines can change. Once you find a promising option, check the club’s own page or contact an organizer to verify that it is still active and that the posted details are current.

How to tell whether the pace and distance fit

Before comparing yourself with a group’s advertised pace, find out what that number represents. It might describe an easy conversational run, a workout pace, or a pace based on a race result. Ask which pace bands are available and what the group’s slowest option actually does.

Share your current running honestly

When you contact a club, give the organizer a realistic picture of your running: your comfortable pace, typical weekly mileage, longest recent run, and goal distance. Runner’s World recommends asking whether members run a pace and distance similar to yours and being ready to describe those details when looking for a group: how to find the best running group for you.

Ask about run-walk intervals and regrouping

If you run and walk, ask whether the group includes walk breaks, how those intervals are handled, and whether runners wait or regroup. Clubs do not use one universal pace-group standard: for example, L.A. Leggers explains that its groups account for running and walking intervals in its guide to choosing a pace group. That is one club’s approach, not a rule for every group.

There is no universal minimum pace or experience threshold established for joining a running group. Look instead for a format that fits you now, such as a beginner or no-drop group, a walk-run session, or a group that clearly explains how it accommodates different speeds. Do not assume every club offers these options.

Match the group’s purpose to your goal

“Running group” can describe very different experiences. Ask what a typical session includes so you know whether the emphasis matches what you want.

  • Social or casual runs: Often suit runners looking for company and an enjoyable routine. Ask whether the pace is conversational and how the group handles different speeds.
  • Beginner or goal-race programs: May provide a more structured route toward an event, such as a 5K. Ask what the sessions involve and whether new runners or run-walk participants are welcome.
  • Speed-focused or coached training: May include planned workouts rather than an easy group run, and some programs charge a fee. Confirm the training format and what is included before signing up.

Fleet Feet’s guide to finding a running group discusses choosing among groups based on goals such as social running, beginner training, or getting faster.

Confirm the logistics and cost before you go

Ask for the exact meeting point, not just the park or neighborhood, and confirm the day, start time, typical route or distance, and how often the group meets. Also check whether you can attend when available or whether the program expects regular attendance. Runner’s World identifies meeting days and location among the details prospective members should check.

I’m new to group runs. I usually run at about [pace] for [distance], and my recent longest run was [distance]. Which group should I join, and do you regroup or include walk breaks?

Replace the brackets with your own details; if you are unsure of your pace, say so and describe how long or far you comfortably run. You can also ask where to find the group when you arrive and whether you should introduce yourself to anyone in particular.

You do not need to commit after one visit. Trying a few groups can help you compare the running format and social atmosphere before deciding which feels comfortable.
