If your Samsung Smart TV is already added to the SmartThings app, your phone can act as the TV remote while you search for the missing one. SmartThings cannot ring or locate the physical remote, though. Samsung’s SmartThings Find service locates Galaxy phones, tablets, watches, and earbuds, and Samsung’s guidance does not describe any way to track a TV remote. If the remote stays missing, the reliable path is to order an exact replacement by your TV’s model number, or to choose a universal remote that states Samsung compatibility.
Use your phone as the remote first
This is the fastest way to get control of the TV back. It works only if the television is already connected to SmartThings, or if you can complete the one-time setup described below.
Open the on-screen remote in SmartThings
- Open the SmartThings app on your Galaxy phone or other supported phone and sign in with your Samsung Account.
- Tap Menu.
- Tap All devices.
- Select your TV (or projector).
- Use the remote that appears. Samsung’s US support instructions state: “An on-screen remote will appear in the app.” Available buttons vary by device, but Samsung lists volume and channel controls, mute, Home, Back, Guide, and navigation.
Network-based smart services need a Samsung Account and an internet connection. If the TV has not been added before, setup can require you to approve a permission on the TV screen or enter a PIN shown on it. Keep the TV nearby during first-time setup so you can respond to that prompt.

Samsung Support Australia describes a newer Mobile Remote card in SmartThings for some 2025 Samsung TVs, monitors, and projectors. It also describes a quick-access option on Galaxy phones when the phone is near the TV. These screens are not the same on every model or software version, so if you do not see the card, use the menu path above instead of assuming your TV lacks support.

Can SmartThings make the lost remote ring or show its location?
No, not according to the Samsung materials available for this article. SmartThings TV control and SmartThings Find are separate features. Find can locate supported Galaxy phones, tablets, watches, and earbuds. Samsung’s guidance does not describe a way to make a Samsung TV remote ring or show where it is. This is a limit of the official guidance as it stands, not a guarantee about future products.
For the physical search, the usual places are the most productive: sofa cushions and throws, the gap beside and under furniture, the TV stand and nearby shelves, and any room where someone may have set it down while carrying food or a device.

Other ways to restore basic control without buying anything
If the phone route is not available, these options can cover basic functions while you look for a replacement.
Another Samsung remote
Samsung says an older Samsung TV’s infrared (IR) remote can perform some functions on another Samsung TV, including power, volume, channel changes, and access to settings. An older Smart Remote may also pair with a newer TV that uses a Smart Remote, but its features can be limited. Samsung’s UK support guidance makes the same point: older remotes may provide basic controls, while full Smart Remote functions may not work. Treat this as a temporary option, not a full replacement.

Buttons on the TV itself
Many Samsung TVs have physical control buttons on the set. Their location and function depend on the model, so check the manual for your exact TV rather than searching for a general button layout.
Choosing a replacement remote
Samsung’s US support page says you can buy remotes from its parts website and find the exact remote originally supplied with your TV or projector by searching the model number. It also says universal remotes sold through other retailers may work if they state Samsung compatibility. Samsung’s support page does not list prices, so compare the current price on the parts site or retailer when you order.

Do not assume that any Samsung remote or any universal remote will work with every Samsung TV. Compatibility depends on the model, so the model number is the check that matters.

If you find the remote but it does not respond
Samsung support recommends checking the battery installation first and replacing the batteries if the remote still does not respond. The battery type depends on the specific remote, so confirm it in the manual or on the battery compartment before buying. If the remote still fails after new batteries, look up the model-specific troubleshooting steps for your TV and remote before you buy a replacement, since pairing procedures also differ by model.
Samsung’s support pages change over time, so confirm the steps on the Samsung support page for your model before following them.
Which route to choose
- You need the TV on right now: Use SmartThings if the TV is already added. Otherwise, try an older Samsung IR remote for basic control.
- You want full functions back: Order the exact replacement by model number.
- You want a cheaper or multi-device option: A universal remote can work, provided its listing explicitly states Samsung compatibility and you accept that some features may be missing.
Use the phone route while you search for the missing remote. If the search fails, order the exact model-number replacement so you do not end up buying a remote that cannot control the TV.
