If your Airbnb host says they can’t accommodate your reservation, ask the host to cancel it, contact Airbnb through the reservation, and search for backup lodging at the same time. Don’t cancel on the host’s behalf. Before booking somewhere else, confirm that it is available for your dates and arrival time, and compare the full cost, location, occupancy rules, and cancellation terms. Airbnb may help find a similar place, but that help depends on availability and comparable pricing.
What to do first when your host cancels
- Check the reservation and keep a record. Review your Airbnb itinerary, cancellation notice, and messages so you know whether the host or you initiated the cancellation. Keep relevant messages and receipts in the platform.
- Ask the host to cancel if they can’t host you. Airbnb tells guests to have the host initiate cancellation when the host cannot accommodate the stay. If the host pressures you to cancel instead, contact Airbnb support before taking that step. Airbnb’s host-cancellation guidance explains the process.
- Contact Airbnb from the reservation’s help or support entry. State when you need to check in, how many people are traveling, your location and price limits, and any essential accessibility or amenity needs. Ask what refund or rebooking options apply to your specific reservation.
Airbnb says, “You can also contact us to get help finding a similar place to stay.” That is an offer of assistance, not a guarantee of a replacement: its policy makes help dependent on circumstances, availability, and comparable pricing. Choose between Airbnb rebooking credit and a refund
For a host cancellation of a home reservation before check-in, Airbnb says guests who choose not to rebook receive a full refund, including service fees. Some eligible guests may be offered booking credit for immediate rebooking. If that credit is unused, Airbnb says it is refunded after 72 hours; guests who are not eligible for credit receive a refund immediately. These options depend on eligibility and the reservation’s circumstances.

A refund being initiated does not mean the money is instantly available: the time it takes to appear depends on the guest’s bank or financial institution. Confirm the options Airbnb offers for your reservation before relying on a refund to pay for another stay.

Search for backup lodging while Airbnb reviews your case
Searching in parallel can help you avoid losing time while you contact Airbnb. Look at hotels, motels, serviced apartments, and other vacation rentals for the same dates, including nearby areas with workable transit or access. Treat a search result as a lead, not a confirmed room: check availability and the provider’s terms directly before relying on it.
Compare the details that affect whether a stay will work
- Availability and arrival: Confirm the accommodation is actually available for the full stay and that check-in is possible at your arrival time. Ask about late-arrival procedures and access instructions.
- Total price: Compare the final amount, including taxes and fees, rather than the nightly rate. If Airbnb has offered a specific contribution, ask how it applies; don’t assume it will cover a price difference.
- Location and transport: Check the distance to your destination, transit, or other essential stops, and account for the time and cost of getting there.
- Party size and needs: Verify that the booking permits the number of travelers and meets any essential accessibility or amenity requirements.
- Cancellation terms: Read the refund deadline and cancellation conditions before paying, especially if Airbnb is still working on another option.
- Confirmation and support: Make sure the provider confirms the booking and that you know how to reach them if check-in goes wrong.
If the problem happens after your stay has started
A host cancellation before check-in is different from a problem discovered during a stay. For a covered Reservation Issue, Airbnb’s policy says the guest who booked should contact Airbnb or the host within 72 hours after discovering it. Include relevant evidence, such as photos, video, or the host’s confirmation, where applicable.

Depending on the severity and impact of the issue, how much of the stay is affected, whether you leave, mitigating factors, and the evidence available, Airbnb says a remedy may include a partial or full refund or rebooking assistance. The policy does not establish a single outcome for every case. The Rebooking and Refund Policy for Homes is marked effective February 6, 2025; circumstances outside a covered home reservation issue may follow different rules.
