To find a device’s Hardware ID in Windows 11, open Device Manager, open the device’s Properties, select Details, then choose Hardware Ids from the Property list. The IDs appear in the value pane. If you need the most specific one, copy the first entry.
Find a device’s Hardware ID in Device Manager
- Open Start, search for Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand the category that contains the device you need. Its category depends on the device type.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- In the Property dropdown, select Hardware Ids. Read or copy the value or values shown in the pane.
Which entry should you copy?
Windows can show an ordered list of Hardware IDs, from the most specific to the least specific. If a support request asks for the most detailed Hardware ID and does not specify a different entry, use the first value. Microsoft’s documentation says a list can contain up to 64 IDs: Hardware IDs.
Choose the right identifier
Hardware ID is not a catch-all name for every identifier associated with a device. If a form or support technician names a specific property, select that property rather than copying a different identifier that happens to look similar.
| Identifier | What it refers to | When to select it |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware Ids | A vendor-defined identification string Windows uses to match a device to a driver package. | When the request says “Hardware ID” or “Hardware Ids.” |
| Compatible Ids | Identifiers used for driver matching that are generally more generic than Hardware IDs. | Only when the request specifically asks for “Compatible IDs.” |
| Device instance ID | An identifier for an installed instance of a device; it is different from the Hardware Ids property. | Only when the request specifically asks for an instance ID. |
| Computer hardware ID (CHID) | A whole-computer identifier generated from SMBIOS field data, rather than the Hardware IDs list for a selected device. | Only when the request specifically asks for the computer CHID. |
To view Compatible IDs
In the same device’s Properties window, stay on Details and select Compatible Ids from the Property dropdown. These values may identify a more general device type, so they are not a substitute when the request asks for Hardware IDs. Microsoft explains the distinctions in its documentation on Hardware IDs and identification of Plug and Play devices.

Common lookup mistakes
- Checking the General tab: choose Details, then the requested property.
- Copying Compatible IDs by mistake: confirm the dropdown says Hardware Ids when that is what the request names.
- Copying a device instance ID: an instance ID identifies an installed device instance; it is not the Hardware Ids property.
- Assuming there is only one Hardware ID: Windows may list several, ordered from most specific to least specific.
- Confusing a device ID with the computer CHID: the CHID is a separate computer-level value derived from SMBIOS data; the Device Manager steps above display identifiers for the selected device.
If you cannot find the device
Device Manager’s category tree depends on device type, so check the categories relevant to the component rather than expecting every device to appear in the same place. Once you locate it, use its own Properties window; the identifier shown belongs to that selected device.
