To find where a downloaded file was saved, open File Explorer and select Downloads from Home or the left navigation pane. To check where a web download came from, look in the browser’s download history. These answer different questions: the Downloads folder is a destination, while download history may show the file’s web source.
Find the downloaded file in Windows 11
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start, or press Windows logo key + E.
- Select Downloads in Home or the left navigation pane, then look for the file.
Microsoft documents Downloads as a known folder available from Home or the navigation pane by default in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later guidance. Your view may differ if you customized File Explorer or unpinned the folder. If Downloads is missing from the navigation pane, check Home or search from there. To restore an unpinned known folder, open Home, select the Up arrow beside the address bar, right-click Downloads, and choose Pin to Quick access. Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance describes the folder locations and pinning option.
Check the save location used by Microsoft Edge
If the file is not in Downloads, check the application that downloaded it. In Edge, the configured destination is shown under Settings and more (…) > Settings > Downloads, in the Location area. Select Change there to choose a different folder.

This setting is specific to Edge; the steps and labels may differ in other browsers or download apps. Microsoft’s Edge download instructions cover the location and save prompt.

See where a downloaded file came from
For a file downloaded from the web, check the browser’s download history. Edge’s history lists web downloads and can help identify their source. Clearing the history removes the list, but it does not delete the downloaded files. Microsoft explains how Edge handles browser history.
Windows may also attach origin-related security information to a downloaded file. To check whether Windows treats a particular file as blocked, right-click it in File Explorer, select Properties, and look near the bottom of the General tab for a security message. This is a security clue that the file may be internet-originated or otherwise untrusted; it is not a reliable way to recover the full website address. Only unblock a file if you trust its source. See Microsoft’s Attachment Manager guidance.
