Use India’s official records together, not a single search box. Start with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) when you have a bench and case number, search the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) public-announcement listing by corporate-debtor name, and use eCourts when you have a party name or another case identifier. Then compare dates, case history and the underlying order or notice before describing a company as being in the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP), liquidation, or any other status.
Which official record should you use first?
The right starting point depends on the identifier you have and the question you need answered. NCLT is the most direct route for tracking a known tribunal matter. IBBI is useful for locating public notices connected with a corporate debtor. eCourts offers additional case-status searches by party and case identifiers.

A result from one system is evidence from that system only. A tribunal case history, an IBBI announcement and a later court order are different records. For a consequential decision—such as extending credit, buying assets or deciding whether a claim can be filed—retain the documents and reconcile their dates.
Collect the identifiers before searching
Good identifiers prevent false matches between companies with similar names. Gather as much of the following as possible:

- The exact corporate-debtor name as it appears in a filing or public announcement, including punctuation and suffixes.
- The NCLT bench, if known.
- The case type, CP number and registration year for an NCLT matter.
- Any complete case number, filing number, order number or announcement document already available.
- Known petitioner, respondent, applicant or insolvency professional names.
- Dates shown on notices or orders, so that older and newer records can be distinguished.
Do not silently “correct” a name while searching. A former name, abbreviated name or spelling variation can lead to a missed result. Try the exact form used on the document first, then reasonable variants while recording which spelling produced each result.
Search an NCLT case by case number
Enter the required fields
Open the official NCLT case-number search page and provide the bench, case type, CP number and year. Complete the CAPTCHA and submit the search. These fields identify a particular tribunal filing more reliably than a broad company-name query.
Use Case History when the status page is insufficient
NCLT itself identifies “Case History” as an alternative for tracking status and viewing hearing lists, interim orders, judgments and associated applications. The portal’s wording is: “Please check “Case History”, an alternative option to Track case status, View List of Hearings, Interim Orders, Judgement, Associated Applications etc., if facing any problem while using case status or judgement search.”

Open the Case History view for the matching matter and read the entries chronologically. Note the latest dated hearing, order or direction rather than relying on a headline status alone. Download or retain the order when the page provides one, and record the case number and bench alongside it.
Verify that the case belongs to the right company
Compare the corporate-debtor name in the result with the name on your source document. Also check the applicant, opposing parties, bench and filing year. Similar names, group companies and matters involving an individual director can otherwise be mistaken for the company’s insolvency case.
Find public insolvency and liquidation announcements on IBBI
Search by corporate debtor
Use the IBBI public-announcement listing and search for the corporate debtor’s name. Review the returned announcement rather than treating the search result as a final status label.

Read every field in the listing
For each matching entry, record:
- Announcement type, such as a Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process announcement or a voluntary-liquidation announcement.
- The announcement date.
- The applicant named in the listing.
- The insolvency professional, where shown.
- The linked public notice or document.
Open the notice and preserve its file name, date and corporate-debtor name. The notice proves that the listed announcement was published; it does not by itself prove that no later order, resolution, withdrawal or liquidation event occurred. Use NCLT case history and subsequent orders to investigate what happened after the announcement.
Distinguish announcement categories
A CIRP announcement and a voluntary-liquidation announcement are not interchangeable labels. Quote the category exactly as displayed, include its date, and avoid replacing it with a broader statement such as “the company is bankrupt” unless a later record supports that conclusion.
Use eCourts when you lack an NCLT case number
Choose a search mode
The eCourts case-status service supports searches by petitioner or respondent, case number, filing number, advocate, FIR number, act type and case type. Select the mode that matches the information you actually possess. If you know only the company or another party, use the party-name option.
Run a party-name search correctly
- Enter at least three characters of the petitioner or respondent name.
- Enter the registration year required by the form.
- Choose whether to search pending, disposed or both matters.
- If you do not know the status, choose “Both.” The service instructs: “If you don’t know the exact status of the Case, then click on the Both option button.”
- Select the applicable state, district and court details when the form requests them.
- Complete the CAPTCHA and submit.
- Open the matching result’s View or Case History option and compare the parties, dates and case identifiers with your documents.
Party-name results may include matters unrelated to insolvency or may use a different spelling. Filter by the court, case type, year and parties, then inspect the history instead of assuming that a name match is the relevant insolvency proceeding.
How the three records fit together
Use the portals as complementary evidence. The following sequence keeps the record types distinct:
- Locate: Use IBBI when you have only the corporate-debtor name, or eCourts when you have a party name or filing detail.
- Identify: Extract the NCLT bench, case type, CP number and year from a matching notice, order or case result.
- Track: Search that matter on NCLT and open Case History to review hearings, interim orders, judgments and associated applications.
- Corroborate: Compare the announcement date, tribunal entries and latest available order. Keep copies of the documents that support your conclusion.
This approach answers different questions without conflating them: IBBI can show that a public announcement was made; NCLT can show the tribunal’s recorded history; eCourts can provide another route to a case result when other identifiers are missing.

How to state a company’s current status accurately
Use dated, specific wording
State what the record actually establishes and attach the relevant date. For example, “An IBBI public announcement lists a CIRP notice dated [date]” is narrower and more defensible than “the company is currently bankrupt.” If an NCLT Case History contains a later order, identify the order date and describe the direction recorded there.
Separate the event from the present position
An announcement is an event in the public-announcement record. A tribunal order is an event in the case record. Neither should be presented as the latest position unless its date and subsequent history have been checked. A company may have multiple applications, hearings or related proceedings, so include the case number and bench in any serious report.
Check identity before relying on a result
- Match the full corporate-debtor name.
- Check the registered case year and CP number.
- Compare the applicant and insolvency professional where listed.
- Check whether the document concerns the company, a group entity or an individual.
- Read the order or notice, not only the search-result summary.
What to do when a search returns no result
A no-result search does not establish that no proceeding exists. The official systems use different interfaces and record types, and none is identified as a complete index of every relevant matter. Work through the following checks:

- Try the company’s known former or abbreviated name, while documenting the variation.
- On NCLT, confirm the selected bench, case type, CP number and year; a wrong year or bench can produce an empty result.
- On eCourts, use at least three characters, enter the required registration year, select the correct jurisdiction and choose “Both” when status is unknown.
- Search IBBI announcements separately by the debtor name and inspect nearby dates or announcement categories.
- Use any recovered filing number, case number or order number in the corresponding search mode.
- Check the linked document itself for a different spelling, bench or case identifier.
- Record the date and terms used for each attempt. Portal data and interfaces can change.
If all three routes remain inconclusive, report that the searches did not locate a matching record rather than asserting that no insolvency or bankruptcy case exists.
Common errors and their fixes
Searching only a company name on NCLT
The NCLT case-number page asks for structured case fields and is not described as a universal company-name index. Use IBBI or eCourts to discover identifiers, then return to NCLT for case tracking.
Treating an IBBI notice as the latest order
Read the announcement date and then check NCLT Case History for later hearings and orders. Preserve the notice as evidence of the announcement, not as a substitute for the tribunal record.

Choosing only pending or only disposed on eCourts
If the case status is unknown, select “Both,” as the service instructs. Searching one status category can hide the matter you need.

NCLT and eCourts require CAPTCHA completion, and eCourts party-name lookup requires a minimum of three characters and a registration year. An incomplete form can look like a substantive no-result.
Reporting a name match without reading history
Open View or Case History and compare parties, dates, court details and documents. A similar company name is not enough to establish identity.

For each company you investigate, create one dated file or spreadsheet entry containing:
- Exact corporate-debtor name and any alternate spelling used.
- NCLT bench, case type, CP number and year.
- IBBI announcement type, date, applicant, insolvency professional and notice file.
- eCourts search mode, jurisdiction, registration year and result identifier.
- Latest date visible in each case history or order you reviewed.
- Copies or stable references to the underlying orders and notices.
- A short conclusion that distinguishes “announcement found,” “case history located” and “latest order reviewed.”
This record makes your conclusion auditable and helps you repeat the search when a portal changes or a new order is issued.

You have only the company name
Begin with IBBI’s public-announcement search. Record every plausible announcement and open the linked notice. Extract any NCLT bench, case number or date, then use those fields in NCLT Case History. Run an eCourts party-name search as an independent check, using at least three characters, the registration year and “Both” if necessary.

You have an NCLT case number
Go directly to the NCLT case-number page, enter the bench, case type, CP number and year, complete CAPTCHA and open Case History. Check the latest dated entry and associated applications. Use IBBI to see whether a related public announcement is listed, but do not substitute that notice for the tribunal history.
You have a notice but cannot find the case
Copy the debtor name, applicant, announcement date and every case identifier exactly as printed. Search IBBI by the debtor name, then try eCourts by party name and the required year. If you recover a bench or CP number, retry NCLT with the correct case type and year. Keep the notice and document the unsuccessful searches; they are not proof that no case exists.
You need to know whether the matter is still active
Do not infer activity from an old announcement. Locate the NCLT Case History and inspect the most recent dated hearing, order or judgment. Compare it with the announcement date and any later document found through eCourts. Describe the result with dates and case identifiers.

Portal freshness and responsible interpretation
Official portal interfaces and live case data can change. A search performed on one date may not show a later filing or order. Before publishing or relying on a conclusion, revisit the official pages, check the dates displayed in the result and open the underlying document where available.
These searches locate public records; they do not replace professional advice on claim filing, voting rights, asset purchases or the legal effect of an order. When the consequence is material, give counsel the case number, bench, notices and orders you collected so that the legal interpretation is based on the complete record.
