Search the business’s exact name together with its city or service area, then check the result in a map service and compare its website and contact details with independent sources. If you need to confirm legal registration or a professional license, use the relevant official register or regulator. These checks can help establish identity and status, but no listing or registration alone proves that a business is trustworthy.
Find the business and its official website
- Search the exact name with a location. Enter the business name and its city, neighborhood, or service area. If the name is common, add the type of service or another distinctive detail.
- Repeat the search in a map service. Google advises searching for the business name and city in Google Search or Maps. A map result can help you compare a claimed location, phone number, hours, and website with the information the business gives you. Google’s instructions for finding a business on Google.
- Inspect the website address and contact details. Open the result that appears to be the business’s own website. Check the domain spelling carefully: a similar-looking address can impersonate a real business. Compare the site’s name, location, phone number, and other details with independent sources. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warns that scammers can use fake or misleading identifying details. ACCC guidance on recognising and avoiding scams.
A business may use a trading name that differs from its legal entity name, or serve an area without a walk-in shop. Treat differences as a reason to verify, not automatic proof of fraud.
Check registration and licensing separately
Use the official business register for the relevant country or state if you want to know whether an entity appears in a register. If the business offers a regulated service, check the relevant licensing or regulatory authority too. A register entry, license, and map listing answer different questions: none by itself establishes that a business is honest or that a particular transaction is safe.

For Australian businesses
The ACCC points consumers to ASIC’s Organisations and Business Names search and the Australian Business Register’s ABN lookup. Depending on the work, additional state or territory licensing may apply. The ACCC also cautions that scammers can fake registration numbers and that even legitimate businesses can act dishonestly. For UK financial services
Use the FCA Firm Checker or Financial Services Register to check a financial firm and verify its contact details. The Financial Conduct Authority distinguishes registration from authorization: a firm that is registered but not authorized may not have permission to provide regulated products, and consumers may have fewer protections. Look for warning signs before contacting or paying
- Search the business name with terms such as “scam” or “complaint.” Reviews and search results are leads to investigate, not definitive proof either way. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends this search as one way to look for reports about a company. FTC advice on avoiding scams.
- Compare information across the business’s own website, map listing, official registers, and other independent sources. Pay attention to conflicting names, locations, phone numbers, or domains.
- Do not assume the first search result is authentic. Search results can display fake customer-service numbers. Check a phone number against the business’s verified website or a trusted regulator’s register before calling or sharing information. FTC advice on avoiding scams; FCA Firm Checker.
- Pause if the business pressures you to act quickly, requests sensitive information unexpectedly, or its identity details do not line up. Resolve the mismatch through a contact channel verified independently before paying.
What an online listing can—and cannot—tell you
A map listing can help check a claimed location and provide practical details such as hours, website, or phone number. A business register can show whether an entity appears in that register. A sector regulator can help establish whether a firm has permission for a regulated activity. Those are distinct checks; do not treat any one of them as a guarantee of good conduct or transaction safety.

Google Business Profile is intended for eligible storefront and service-area businesses that interact with customers in person. Google says online-only businesses without a customer-facing location and without in-person customer visits are not eligible.
