VisiMark lets you define finance calculations alongside a Markdown table, then format results, check them against declared rules, and evaluate alternative assumptions. Its tutorial demonstrates a loan-payment schedule with PMT and an investment appraisal with NPV and IRR. The figures below are the examples reported by the tutorial, not an independent product test or financial advice.
What the three finance functions calculate
PMT: a fixed periodic payment
PMT(rate, nper, pv) derives a fixed payment from the interest rate per period, number of periods, and present value (the principal in the loan example). Keep the units aligned: a monthly rate goes with monthly periods, and an annual rate goes with annual periods. If the rate and period count use different intervals, the resulting payment does not represent the intended loan schedule.
NPV: discounted value of periodic cash flows
NPV(rate, flows) discounts a sequence of cash flows using a rate for each interval. The cash-flow interval and rate interval must match. The function’s result depends on when each flow occurs as well as its amount; the example treats the initial investment as a time-zero outflow and subsequent receipts as year-one through year-four flows.
IRR: the rate associated with a cash-flow series
IRR(flows) finds the rate at which the cash-flow series breaks even under the specified timing. Use consistent signs: the referenced function conventions represent cash paid out as negative and cash received as positive. IRR is a property of the entered flow sequence and timing, not a judgment about whether an investment is worthwhile.

How the VisiMark workflow is organized
The tutorial by Michał Niedźwiedzki describes VisiMark as a way to put rules next to the table they govern in a Markdown document. A fenced vmark block after the table declares column rules and derived totals. The tutorial describes three useful operations:
fmtfills cells from the rules.checkreports when a value disagrees with its declared rule.evalapplies scenario values and returns a requested output without editing the document’s assumptions.
The tutorial says its two example documents pass visimark check; that is the author’s report, not an independently verified test. The project is described as MIT-licensed, with a browser playground and repository. VisiMark’s site is the source identified by the tutorial.

Build the loan example with PMT
The tutorial’s loan example uses PLN 18,000 principal, a 6% annual rate, and three annual periods. It declares two decimal places of payment precision and reports an annual payment of PLN 6,733.98. Its reported total paid is PLN 20,201.94 and total interest is PLN 2,201.93.
Those values are tied to the example’s inputs and rounding. The displayed final balance is -PLN 0.01, which the article attributes to rounding the payment to cents; it also notes that reported interest differs by one grosz from total paid minus principal. A schedule using a rounded payment can therefore leave a small residual rather than exactly zeroing the balance. Do not interpret that cent as evidence of a different principal or as proof that every periodic payment is exact to more than two decimals.

Includes a protective case, cleaning cloth, and batteries so it’s ready out of the box. Large screen with clear contrast (non-backlit) is easy to read during exams or lectures.
Before relying on a PMT result in your own document, establish the period and display precision explicitly. The tutorial says VisiMark will refuse to format or check PMT, NPV, and IRR when precision is omitted, because output precision is not inferred from the inputs. This is a VisiMark implementation detail reported by the tutorial, not a general rule about financial mathematics.
Evaluate an investment with NPV and IRR
The tutorial’s investment example places an initial outflow of 50,000 at year zero, then inflows of 12,000, 15,000, 18,000, and 22,000 at years one through four. At an 8% discount rate per year, the article reports NPV of 4,430.83 and IRR of 11.54%.

Under that example’s timing and sign convention, raising the discount rate above the IRR makes the investment fail its break-even test. NPV and IRR should be read together with the cash-flow schedule: changing the timing, signs, or interval changes the question being answered. These reported outputs are examples from the tutorial, not a recommendation to invest.
Run what-if scenarios without rewriting assumptions
The tutorial uses param inputs so assumptions can be varied for scenario evaluation while the source document remains unchanged. Its examples change the loan term and the investment discount rate:
Best Value
- Brand New in box; The product ships with all relevant accessories
- Dedicated keys allow easy access to common financial and statistics functions
- Easy-to-use design provides business, finance and statistical calculations fast
- Specially designed to meet the mathematical needs
- For a four-period loan scenario, the article reports a payment of 5,194.65.
- For an investment scenario with an 11% discount rate, it reports NPV of 638.67.
The article presents these as eval commands that set scenario values and retrieve one requested result. Each output remains specific to the example’s original cash flows, principal, rate conventions, periods, and precision.
Practical checks before trusting a calculation
- Match units. Use the rate per interval corresponding to the period count or cash-flow spacing.
- Preserve timing. Distinguish a time-zero cash flow from flows at later periods; do not treat periodic NPV as a dated-cash-flow method.
- Use consistent signs. Mark outflows negative and receipts positive when following the referenced conventions.
- Declare precision. Decide how many decimal places to display, and account for any residual created by rounded periodic payments.
- Separate arithmetic from decisions. A discount rate is an assumption; whether it is appropriate is a judgment the calculation cannot make for you.
The tutorial also describes a rare implementation case in which a requested IRR precision is too high for its bisection search to establish. Treat that as a limitation reported for VisiMark’s calculation procedure, not as a universal limitation on IRR.
What VisiMark does—and what the examples do not establish
VisiMark’s documented appeal is that calculation rules, assumptions, and table values can live together, and that checks and parameterized scenarios can make recalculation more repeatable. The available material does not provide a comparative product evaluation against spreadsheets or other tools, nor does it establish independent test results for VisiMark. A fair comparison would examine how each workflow keeps rules beside data, checks values against those rules, supports repeatable scenarios, and handles timing, signs, and displayed precision.
