If you want to keep your current Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign, don’t treat a new-character idea as a command to abandon it. Match the fix to what is making you want to restart: respec if you regret your build, lower the pressure if combat is frustrating, or choose one small objective if the campaign feels too sprawling. Keep the new character idea for a later run—and give yourself permission to stop if the current one simply is not fun.
First, identify what is triggering the restart urge
Players often call the pattern “restartitis”: starting over repeatedly, sometimes after reaching Act 2 or Act 3. Community discussions describe triggers such as imagining a better Tav, wanting to try a different build, feeling uneasy about missed content, or losing track of a campaign with too many open quests. Those are individual players’ descriptions, not a diagnosis or evidence about how common the pattern is.
Before deleting or abandoning a run, name the specific problem. A useful response depends on whether you dislike your character, feel overwhelmed by the game’s scope, are struggling with difficulty, or are excited by a new concept.

If you regret your class or build, respec
You may not need a new protagonist to try a different build. Larian says players can respec the protagonist and companions. That makes a class or build change an option within the current campaign. For an Origin character, however, changing class can affect role-play choices and dialogue, so it is not always a consequence-free swap. Larian’s Community Update #22 explains the respec feature and that trade-off.

Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
If combat pressure is driving the urge, consider the available difficulty options
Custom Mode lets players shape aspects of the experience, which may help if the current level of challenge is making the campaign unpleasant. Larian’s Community Update #25 describes its options. Patch 6 also notes that players who began on a set difficulty can switch to Custom Mode, with Honour Mode excluded. Larian’s Patch 6 notes document that distinction.
Honour Mode has stricter constraints, including disabling the ability to load previous saves. Do not assume that advice about freely changing modes or reloading applies to an Honour Mode run; Larian’s Custom Mode and Honour Mode details are in the Community Update #25.

If the campaign feels too large, make the next session smaller
Pick one concrete stopping point, such as completing a single quest step or having one companion conversation. You can also decide that optional tasks which do not interest you can wait or be skipped. The point is not to prove you can clear every marker; it is to make the next session manageable enough to see whether you still want to continue.
One player who described finishing after repeated Act 3 restarts said they narrowed the party they managed and skipped optional content. That is an anecdote, not a proven method, but it illustrates a useful principle: you can reduce the amount you are trying to juggle instead of restarting to make the game feel fresh. If fear of missing out is the problem, let this run be incomplete
A single playthrough does not have to include every side quest, encounter, or companion arc. Trying to make one run contain everything can turn exploration into a checklist. Decide what matters to this character and let the rest remain for another playthrough.
If a new Tav idea is too tempting, save it rather than suppressing it
Write down the character’s premise, class idea, or role-play choices in a note. That preserves the idea without requiring you to act on it right now. Baldur’s Gate 3 supports other ways to experience the game: Larian describes Origins as playable heroes with their own stories and attitudes, and says the game includes twelve hirelings, one for each class, who can be respecced. Those options can support later experiments with perspective or party composition. Larian’s Community Update #21 covers Origins and hirelings.

- Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
- Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
- Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
- Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
Make a one-session contract with yourself
When you feel the urge to start over, try a short, specific commitment instead of demanding that you finish the campaign. For example: “I’ll play until I complete this quest step, then decide whether I want another session.” Or: “I’ll have one companion conversation and stop.”
- Write down the restart trigger: build regret, difficulty, too many open tasks, completionism, or a new character concept.
- Choose one response that fits it: respec, adjust permitted difficulty settings, narrow the next goal, skip optional content, or record the new idea.
- Set one clear stopping point for the session.
- At that point, reassess honestly. Continue only if you want to.
This is a way to interrupt an automatic restart, not a guarantee that you will finish. If the run still feels like a chore, taking a break or starting a deliberate new campaign is reasonable.

Keep replaying as a choice, not a failure
Wanting a fresh campaign is not a moral failing, and finishing this one is not an obligation. The useful distinction is whether you are restarting automatically to escape a fixable frustration or choosing a new run because that is what you genuinely want to play. Keeping a note of future character ideas lets you preserve the possibility of another run without forcing the decision today.
