Yes—you can factory-reset a Google TV Streamer (4K) without deleting the underlying Google Account. The reset erases data and settings stored on the streamer, returns it to factory defaults, and cannot be undone. Your Google Account remains available for signing in again during setup.
Use the TV menu when the remote and interface work. If the menu is unavailable, use the button on the back of the powered-on streamer and follow its LED signals.
How do I factory reset Google TV Streamer without losing my Google account?
A factory reset applies to the Google TV Streamer device, not to the Google Account itself. Google describes the reset as returning device settings to factory defaults and warns: This action clears your data and can’t be undone.
The reset removes locally stored device information, so plan to configure the streamer again afterward.

What to know before starting
A reset is permanent for data on the streamer
Do not begin until you are comfortable losing the streamer’s saved settings and data. The reset cannot be reversed through a menu option or a recovery prompt. Google’s warning applies even when the reset is being performed only to fix a temporary playback or connection problem.
No purchase or accessory is required
Google’s documented procedures require the Google TV Streamer (4K), its connection to power and a TV for the button method, and the remote for the menu method. The instructions do not require a cable, storage device, computer, or replacement accessory. There is also no reset fee or subscription purchase described in Google’s procedure.
Check which device you have
These instructions are specifically for Google TV Streamer (4K). Google publishes different reset directions for older Chromecast products, so do not use an older model’s button timing or LED interpretation as a substitute. If the device name or hardware is unclear, identify the product before pressing and holding a reset button.
Choose the method that matches your situation
| Method | What you need | When it is useful | Reset confirmation |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV menu | A working TV display, remote, and navigable Google TV interface | The streamer starts normally and you can open settings | On-screen confirmation, followed by the device completing the reset |
| Rear button | The streamer connected to the TV and powered on | The menu is unavailable or the remote cannot navigate to settings | LED changes from blinking yellow to solid white before you release the button |
Both routes produce the same factory-reset result. The difference is access: the menu route is easier to verify on screen, while the button route provides LED feedback when the interface cannot be used.
Make a short pre-reset checklist
- Confirm that you are resetting the Google TV Streamer rather than another Google streaming device.
- Decide whether you are fixing a problem, preparing a return, or handing the device to someone else.
- Keep the device connected to power during the reset.
- Have the remote available if you plan to use the menu route.
- Remember that setup afterward requires choosing a setup route and signing in with a Google Account.
- If the streamer belongs to a shared Google Home, consider whether a broader device-removal action is also intended.
Reset Google TV Streamer from the TV menu
Use this route when the streamer responds to the remote and you can see the Google TV home screen.
- At the top-right corner of the TV screen, select your profile.
- Select All settings.
- Open System.
- Select About.
- Choose Factory Reset.
- Read the confirmation message, then confirm the reset if prompted.
- Leave the streamer powered on while it clears its data and completes the return to factory defaults.
Do not unplug the streamer while the reset is in progress. The exact time required can vary, and Google’s instructions do not specify a fixed completion time. Wait for the device to finish and display its setup experience before attempting to configure it again.
If the Factory Reset option is hard to find
Follow the labels in order: profile picture > All settings > System > About > Factory Reset. Do not substitute a similarly named option from an older Chromecast model; Google lists device-specific reset directions, and this procedure is for Google TV Streamer (4K).

This method is intended for a streamer whose on-screen menu is unavailable. Keep the Google TV Streamer connected to the TV and powered on throughout the procedure.
- Locate the physical button on the back of the streamer.
- Press and hold the button for approximately 10–12 seconds.
- Continue holding while the LED starts blinking yellow.
- When the LED turns solid white, release the button.
- Allow the device to complete the reset and return to its setup state.
The LED sequence is the important confirmation. Releasing at the first sign of blinking yellow is not the documented endpoint; keep holding until the LED becomes solid white, then release. If the LED does not follow that sequence, verify that the device is powered on and that you are pressing the Google TV Streamer button rather than applying reset timing from an older Chromecast model.

What to do if the button attempt appears unsuccessful
- Check that the streamer is connected to power and that the TV is set to the correct input.
- Start the hold again and count the full 10–12 seconds before looking for the blinking-yellow signal.
- Keep holding until the LED is solid white, then release once.
- If the device still boots to the old interface, use the TV-menu route when navigation becomes available.
These checks address access and timing only. They do not change the fact that a successful reset erases the device data and cannot be undone.
Will factory resetting the streamer delete your Google Account?
No. Google’s factory-reset instructions describe clearing data on the streaming device; they do not instruct you to delete the underlying Google Account. Afterward, the setup process provides a sign-in step so you can use that account again.

Device data and account data are different
The streamer stores settings and device information needed to operate the hardware and apps. A factory reset clears that device-side information. Your Google Account is an online account managed separately from the streamer, so wiping the hardware is not the same operation as deleting the account itself.
Removing an account from the streamer is a separate route
Google documents account removal under All settings > Accounts & Sign In. Removing all accounts from the streaming device causes a factory reset. That route therefore combines account removal from the device with the reset process; it is not the same as deleting the Google Account from Google’s account service.
Signing out through account activity is another action
Google also documents signing out the streaming device through Google Account device activity. This is an account-management action rather than the physical reset procedure. If your goal is simply to wipe the streamer before setting it up again, use one of the two reset methods above instead of treating account-activity controls as a substitute for the reset.
Removing the streamer from Google Home has broader consequences
Removing the device through Google Home is distinct from resetting it locally. Google says that this action unlinks the streamer from your Google Account and from the accounts of other members of the home, and deletes data associated with the device. Use that route only when you intend to remove the device from the home’s linked-device structure, not merely when you need a clean local setup.
Which account action matches your goal?
| Goal | Action | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Start the streamer over or fix a persistent device problem | Factory reset from the TV menu or rear button | Clears data on the streamer and returns it to factory defaults |
| Remove accounts from the streaming device | Use All settings > Accounts & Sign In | Removing all accounts from the device causes a factory reset |
| Manage the streamer’s sign-in session remotely | Use Google Account device activity | Signs out the device through account-management controls |
| Remove the streamer from a shared home | Remove it through Google Home | Unlinks it from your account and other home members’ accounts and deletes associated device data |
The local reset is usually the narrowest action when you only need a clean device. Google Home removal has household-level consequences, so treat it as a separate decision.
Try less-destructive troubleshooting first
If the reset is only for troubleshooting, Google recommends checking simpler causes first because a factory reset erases device data. The general Google TV sequence is:
- Check Wi-Fi. Confirm that the streamer is connected to the intended network and that the connection is available on other devices.
- Check for system updates. Install any update offered by the Google TV system before wiping the device.
- Restart the streamer. A restart can clear a temporary software state without removing saved device information.
- Check the active profile. Verify that Google TV is using the profile expected for the content or settings you are trying to access.
- Clear the affected app’s data. If one app is failing while the rest of the interface works, clear that app’s data before resetting the entire streamer.
- Factory-reset only after those checks. Use the menu or rear-button procedure when the less-destructive steps do not resolve the problem.
This sequence is general Google TV guidance, not a guarantee that every fault has the same cause or that one particular step will fix it. A reset is the broadest action because it removes device data rather than targeting one connection, app, or profile.

Match the fix to the symptom
A network symptom points first to checking Wi-Fi; a single-app symptom points first to clearing that app’s data; a temporary interface problem may respond to a restart; and a profile-specific content problem warrants checking the active profile. A full reset is appropriate when those narrower checks have not resolved the issue or when you need to prepare the hardware for another user. This order limits unnecessary loss of device-side settings.
Set up the streamer again after the reset
Google says a previously used Google TV Streamer should be factory-reset before setup. Once the reset finishes, you can choose either of Google’s documented setup routes.
Option 1: Use the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app on a compatible phone or tablet.
- Start the device-setup flow and select the Google TV Streamer when it appears.
- Follow the pairing and network instructions shown in the app.
- When prompted, sign in with a Google Account.
- Finish the remaining on-screen setup steps for the streamer.
The app route is useful when you prefer guided setup on a mobile screen or when entering network details with a phone is more convenient than using the remote.
Option 2: Use the TV and remote
- Turn on the TV input connected to the reset streamer.
- Follow the setup prompts shown on the television.
- Connect the streamer to the requested network.
- Sign in with a Google Account when the TV flow asks for it.
- Complete the remaining configuration steps shown on screen.
The TV route is suitable when you have the remote available and want to complete setup without using the Google Home app.
What you may need to configure again
Because the reset returns the device to factory defaults, expect to work through the setup flow again and re-establish the settings the device asks for. Google’s reset and setup instructions do not specify how every subscription, third-party app account, saved preference, or service-held record is handled. Do not assume that a service’s data or entitlement will be preserved, removed, or restored in a particular way unless that service documents it separately.
Your Google Account is still the account you can select during setup; the reset does not require creating a new Google Account. If another person will use the streamer, choose the account and home arrangement appropriate for that person instead of automatically reusing your own profile.
Preparing a streamer for return or handoff
Google explicitly recommends a factory reset before returning or giving away the Google TV Streamer. Use the menu method if the interface and remote work; otherwise use the rear-button method. Wait until the reset has completed and the device is showing its initial setup experience before disconnecting it for the next person.
If you also remove the device through Google Home, remember that Google says this unlinks it from your account and from other members of the home and deletes data associated with the device. That broader unlinking step may be appropriate for a permanent handoff, but it is separate from the local factory-reset command.
Handoff checklist
- Complete the factory reset while the streamer is powered on.
- Wait for the initial setup experience rather than disconnecting during the reset.
- Decide separately whether the device should be removed from Google Home.
- Do not assume that a local reset alone performs every account-management or household-unlinking action.
- Leave the next user with a device at the setup stage, not with your old configured session.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a device reset with account deletion: the factory reset wipes the streamer; it does not direct you to delete the Google Account.
- Releasing the rear button too early: wait for the LED to turn solid white after the blinking-yellow phase.
- Using instructions for the wrong device: reset timing differs among Google streaming products. These steps are for Google TV Streamer (4K).
- Unplugging during the reset: leave the streamer powered on until it finishes.
- Resetting before checking simpler fixes: Wi-Fi, updates, a restart, profile selection, and app-data clearing may solve a problem without erasing the device.
- Assuming Google Home removal is identical to a local reset: removing the device from Google Home affects linked household accounts and associated device data.
- Expecting a fixed reset duration: Google does not specify a universal completion time, so wait for the setup experience instead of disconnecting on a timer.
- Assuming every service handles data the same way: subscriptions, third-party sign-ins, preferences, and service-held records are governed by their respective services.
Which procedure should you use?
| Your situation | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The home screen and settings open normally | TV menu | You can verify each menu label and confirm the reset on screen. |
| The menu is unavailable but the streamer is powered on | Rear button | The LED provides reset feedback without relying on navigation. |
| You are troubleshooting one app | Try clearing that app’s data first | Google’s troubleshooting order puts targeted steps before a full reset. |
| You are returning or giving away the device | Factory reset before disconnecting it | Google explicitly recommends a reset before handoff. |
| You intend to remove the streamer from a shared Google Home | Review the Google Home removal action separately | Google says it unlinks the device from household members’ accounts and deletes associated data. |
After the reset: a practical checklist
- Confirm the streamer has finished resetting and is showing its setup experience.
- Choose either the Google Home app or the TV-and-remote setup route.
- Sign in with the Google Account you want to use on the streamer.
- Reconnect the device to the required network when prompted.
- Recheck the profile and app configuration after setup.
- If the original problem returns, record whether it affects the whole interface or only one app before deciding on another reset.
The essential distinction is simple: factory-resetting the Google TV Streamer clears the device, while your Google Account remains available for a later sign-in. Use the rear-button method only when the menu cannot be used, follow the LED sequence exactly, and reserve the reset for cases where targeted troubleshooting is not enough.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a factory reset delete my Gmail, Google Photos, or other Google Account data?
No. The documented factory reset clears data on the Google TV Streamer. It is not an instruction to delete the underlying Google Account or its online data. You can sign in with a Google Account again during setup.
What if I cannot open the Google TV settings?
Use the physical button on the back while the powered-on streamer remains connected to the TV. Hold it for about 10–12 seconds, continue through the blinking-yellow LED phase, and release only when the LED turns solid white.
Do I need to buy a cable, computer, or replacement remote to reset it?
No additional purchase is required by Google’s reset instructions. The menu method uses the remote and TV interface; the button method uses the powered-on streamer connected to the TV.
Is removing the device from Google Home the same as factory-resetting it?
No. A local factory reset clears the streamer. Google says removing the device through Google Home unlinks it from your account and other home members’ accounts and deletes associated device data, so it is a broader household-management action.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I reset before returning or giving away the streamer?
Yes. Google explicitly recommends a factory reset before returning or giving away the Google TV Streamer. Wait until the initial setup screen appears before disconnecting it.
What should I try before a full reset for a playback problem?
Google’s general troubleshooting order is to check Wi-Fi, check for system updates, restart the device, verify the active profile, and clear the affected app’s data. Factory-reset after those less-destructive checks have not solved the issue.
Can I use the same Google Account after the reset?
Yes. Google’s setup flow includes signing in with a Google Account, so the account used before the reset can be used again. The device itself will need to be configured again.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A Google TV Streamer (4K) factory reset wipes the streamer, not your Google Account. Use profile > All settings > System > About > Factory Reset, or hold the rear button for 10–12 seconds and release when the LED turns solid white. Keep it powered on, try simpler troubleshooting first, and treat Google Home removal as a separate action with broader account and household consequences.
