A factory reset on a Samsung Galaxy A51 erases data stored on the phone and returns it to the setup screen. If you can unlock the phone, use the reset option in Settings. If Settings is unavailable, Samsung describes a Recovery reset, but the button sequence varies by device—confirm the instructions for your exact A51 variant before trying it. Neither method bypasses Google or screen-lock ownership checks.
What a hard reset does—and what it does not do
“Hard reset,” “master reset,” and “factory reset” are commonly used to mean the same data-erasing process. Google states, “A factory reset erases all your data from your phone.” The reset removes locally stored data and uninstalls apps and their data. Some data stored in your Google Account may be restored afterward, but do not assume every app or its data will return. Google’s Android reset guidance explains the general process.
A reset is not a way to bypass a forgotten screen lock or Google ownership verification. If the phone asks for credentials after a reset, it is applying device protection, not recovering erased data.
Prepare before resetting the A51
- Back up what you want to keep. The reset erases phone data. Google-account data may be available to restore, but apps and their data are uninstalled.
- Confirm your Google Account credentials. Make sure you know the username and password associated with the phone. Google recommends signing in to that account on another device first. If you recently changed its password, wait 24 hours before resetting.
- For a phone you are giving away, remove your Google Account first. Google says this turns off device protection. Otherwise, the next owner may be asked for the prior screen lock or the Google Account previously associated with the phone.
- Charge and connect the phone for setup. Google’s general Android guidance recommends at least 70% charge and access to Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity for post-reset sign-in. These are general recommendations, not A51-specific guarantees.
Google’s general guidance says a reset can take up to an hour; that is not a measured Galaxy A51 reset time. Google’s reset instructions provide the general preparation and timing guidance.

Choose a reset method
| Method | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Settings | You can unlock and use the phone. | The normal menu-based route. Menu wording may differ by Android and One UI version. |
| Recovery | You cannot open Settings. | Samsung’s button combination varies by device. Confirm the exact A51 instructions for your variant; ownership verification may still be required afterward. |
Reset from Settings when the phone is usable
- Open Settings and find the factory data reset option. The exact menu path and wording can vary by Android and One UI version, so follow the labels shown on your A51 or consult the matching manual.
- Review the on-screen information about data that will be erased, then choose the factory data reset confirmation.
- Complete the prompts on the phone and allow it to restart to the setup screen.
Samsung’s factory reset support instructions describe the Settings route in general terms.
Use Recovery only if Settings is unavailable
Samsung’s general Recovery instructions involve switching the phone off, connecting it to a computer with a USB cable, opening Recovery with the device-specific buttons, selecting Wipe data/factory reset (wording may vary), confirming the wipe, and then selecting Reboot system now. The button combination varies by device.
Do not guess at button timing or rely on a sequence meant for another Galaxy model. Samsung’s A51 support listing includes manuals for different software and variants, including an English Android 13 manual revised January 30, 2023. Check the manual matching the actual model and software, or contact Samsung support, before attempting Recovery. Samsung’s general reset instructions and the Galaxy A51 support listing provide the relevant guidance.

What to expect after the reset
The phone restarts to initial setup. You may need to connect to a network and sign in. Depending on the reset route and whether the Google Account was removed beforehand, device protection may ask for the prior screen lock or the Google Account previously associated with the A51. That is an anti-theft check, not a step that restores the erased local data. Google explains this in its device protection guidance.
If you cannot access the required Google Account, do not try to bypass the check. Samsung advises taking the device, with proof of purchase, to an authorized Samsung service center. Samsung support describes this option.
