You cannot tell whether an AI stock rally is supported by fundamentals just by counting companies that mention AI or by looking at how much they spend on it. Evaluate each business: identify what it sells and who pays, check whether adoption turns into revenue and cash, compare returns with investment, assess execution and funding risks, and then ask whether the share price already assumes exceptional growth. AI-linked companies can have very different prospects even when they benefit from the same theme.

What evidence shows a company is actually monetizing AI?

Start with the company’s latest annual and quarterly filings, earnings release, and management discussion. Identify the product or service tied to AI, the customer who pays for it, and the financial measure that shows its effect. A company may sell AI software directly, provide cloud capacity for AI workloads, or sell components used in data centers. Those are different exposures, and a general statement about AI does not establish how much revenue comes from it.

  • Direct revenue: Look for a reported AI product or segment, paid subscriptions, or customer contracts. Check whether the company provides revenue, growth, or margin figures specifically for that activity.
  • Indirect benefit: A cloud provider might report higher usage without isolating AI-related revenue. A supplier might benefit from demand for equipment but not disclose what portion of sales is AI-related. Describe the disclosed benefit, but do not infer a precise AI contribution the company has not reported.
  • Operating benefit: If management says AI improves productivity, retention, or service delivery, look for measurable changes in costs, margins, customer retention, or output—not just the claim itself.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management reported that hyperscaler revenue in key AI segments—cloud or applications—grew an average of 35% year over year in 4Q25. That is a dated aggregate reported in its February 2026 commentary, not a result for every company in the group. The same commentary characterized monetization as concentrated in infrastructure, with end-user monetization still early, uneven, and opaque. Revenue growth in one part of the value chain therefore does not establish that application providers, or any particular stock, are earning attractive returns.

Does adoption translate into paid demand for this company?

Usage and survey results can help show that AI is spreading, but they do not identify which listed company captures the spending or whether a customer’s AI budget is new money. Look for evidence closer to the company’s accounts: paid seats or subscriptions, workloads run, renewals, order growth, backlog, and recognized revenue. Where possible, compare these signals over the same period and check customer concentration and cancellation terms.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s February 2026 article reported that 17% of U.S. businesses said they had adopted AI and 45% paid for AI subscriptions. It also said roughly 60% of firms expected to expand AI budgets significantly, while raising the question of whether that spending would be incremental or replace existing IT expenditure. These indicators describe adoption and budget expectations; they are not audited revenue figures for a public company and do not establish how much a vendor earns.

When assessing demand, distinguish among an announced intention, a pilot, an active workload, and recurring paid use. A survey or management comment may support the first steps in that chain, but it cannot stand in for the later ones. Also check the survey’s date, geography, and method before applying it to a company’s customers.

Is investment producing enough revenue, cash, and return?

Capital expenditure is an input, not proof of a profitable outcome. For infrastructure-heavy businesses, read capex alongside revenue growth, operating income, cash from operations, free cash flow, debt, utilization, and return on invested capital. Consider how long the equipment or facility can earn revenue and whether pricing can cover its cost. For software and application companies, examine hosting and inference costs, gross margins, customer-acquisition costs, and whether pricing covers the cost of serving customers.

The following figures are different estimates with different scopes. They should not be combined into one capex forecast or treated as audited actual spending:

Publisher and date Reported estimate or comparison Scope and qualification
J.P. Morgan Asset Management, February 2026 USD 533 billion of hyperscaler capex projected for 2026; hyperscaler capex described as having risen 170% over the prior two years The article’s hyperscaler estimate and historical comparison; a forecast, not an audited actual.
J.P. Morgan Asset Management, June 15, 2026 USD 697 billion of 2026 capex estimated for five U.S. companies; capex estimated at 93% of hyperscaler cash from operations in 2026, versus 33% in 2023 A separate article’s company set and estimate. Its figures use a different scope from the February estimate and should not be read as the same series.

Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K says investment in AI and cloud capacity can precede fully developed revenue streams. The filing warns that slower adoption or lower customer utilization could prevent expected returns, and that overestimated demand could leave infrastructure underused. It also identifies uncertainty around model and inference costs, components, energy, and future pricing. For an investor, that makes utilization, unit economics, and cash conversion more informative than a spending announcement by itself.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s June 2026 outlook observed that, in the latest earnings season it reviewed, higher capex plans drove stronger performance only when matched with higher revenue estimates. The practical test is not whether spending is large, but whether evidence of demand and expected returns is keeping pace with the resources committed.

Can the company finance and execute its plans?

Assess whether a company can sustain its investment if demand slows, financing becomes more expensive, or deployment takes longer than expected. Compare its spending needs with cash generation, debt, and other funding commitments. For suppliers and infrastructure operators, trace dependencies through customers, cloud providers, semiconductors, power, land, data-center capacity, and regulation. An order or commitment does not necessarily mean an end customer has deployed the product or that the company has collected cash.

NVIDIA’s SEC-filed Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, identifies possible constraints including land, power, data-center capacity, and customer capital, any of which could delay deployment or reduce adoption and revenue growth. It also discusses supply commitments, customer and partner dependencies, and export-control risks. These are disclosed risks, not evidence that a shortfall will occur. When reading a supplier’s reported demand, check how much depends on a small number of customers, whether orders can be cancelled, and what must happen before capacity can be installed and used.

How should you evaluate the stock price separately from the business?

First assess operating performance; then ask what the share price requires the company to deliver. Choose a clearly defined valuation measure, such as trailing or forward price-to-earnings, state the date and comparison group, and understand which earnings estimates the figure uses. Compare the company with relevant peers and the broad market, while checking whether the chosen group actually represents the business being evaluated.

Publisher and date Valuation reported What the figure covers
RBC Wealth Management, August 27, 2026; market data through August 21, 2026 About 20 times forward earnings, down from 28.5 times in October 2025 and below a stated 24.5-times average since 2015 RBC’s defined basket: 70% the S&P 500 Information Technology sector and 30% Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta, equally weighted.
J.P. Morgan Asset Management, February 2026 About 28 times earnings The article’s mega-cap technology group; not necessarily the same earnings basis or companies as RBC’s basket.

These published multiples are not a single valuation for “AI stocks.” Basket definitions, constituents, weighting, dates, and forward versus trailing earnings change the answer. A relatively low multiple can still rely on optimistic forecasts; a high one needs growth, durability, margins, and cash returns strong enough to support it. A basket figure cannot establish fair value for an individual stock.

How to compare two AI-linked companies on consistent terms

Use the same reporting period and definitions for both companies. A comparison is misleading if one figure is a forward estimate and the other a reported result, or if “AI revenue” means different things in each case.

Comparison area Questions to answer
Monetization Is AI revenue separately identified, or is the benefit indirect? Is there a measurable operating improvement, and how directly can it be attributed to AI?
Demand quality Are customers paying and returning? Is there recurring usage, renewal or order visibility, and manageable customer concentration?
Investment returns How do capital and operating costs compare with revenue, margins, utilization, cash flow, and returns on capital?
Funding resilience What cash, debt, or financing is available, and how large is the investment relative to operating cash generation?
Execution dependencies Could power, data-center availability, component supply, deployment timing, customer financing, competition, or regulation disrupt delivery?
Valuation and expectations Is the measure forward or trailing? What date, peer group, benchmark, and growth assumptions does it use?

These are comparison questions, not a standardized score. Their purpose is to reveal where two companies’ AI exposure differs: one may have visible paid usage but high delivery costs; another may have strong demand signals but heavy funding or infrastructure dependencies.

What would strengthen or weaken the case?

The case that an AI rally is supported by fundamentals becomes stronger when companies show identifiable monetization or measurable operating benefits, repeat customer demand, and returns that keep pace with investment. It weakens when adoption claims do not lead to paid use, capital needs rise faster than revenue or cash generation, margins fail to cover delivery costs, or infrastructure depends on uncertain utilization and delayed deployment. Even strong business results do not settle whether a stock is attractively priced; valuation depends on the expectations embedded in that particular share price.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s June 15, 2026 outlook said that investors were scrutinizing individual company fundamentals rather than simply placing options on the overall market, which it contrasted with behavior more common in late-stage bubble euphoria. That is the asset manager’s interpretation of market behavior, not a definitive test of whether the market is or is not a bubble.

This framework evaluates evidence, not a named stock or an individual investor’s circumstances. Company disclosures and market estimates change, so use the latest filings and keep the reporting period, definitions, and date attached to each comparison.
