Evaluate an IT services company by checking whether its revenue growth is comparable, whether its margin is improving on a consistent definition, and whether bookings and backlog are converting into profitable revenue. Treat pipeline figures as demand indicators—not as revenue already earned or guaranteed future sales.

Start with comparable revenue growth

Begin with year-over-year revenue growth, then separate reported growth from organic or constant-currency growth when the company discloses both. Acquisitions, disposals, and exchange-rate movements can change reported revenue without reflecting underlying demand. Use the company’s reconciliation and compare the same period and segment across companies.

Wipro’s FY2026 Form 20-F illustrates why both measures matter: IT Services revenue increased 3.71% as reported, while constant-currency revenue declined 1.6% compared with FY2025. Those figures describe different bases; neither should be selected alone to characterize performance. Wipro FY2026 Form 20-F

Read margin level, definition, and direction together

Compare operating or segment margin over several periods, using the same numerator, denominator, business segment, and accounting basis. Keep GAAP measures separate from adjusted or non-GAAP measures, and review any reconciliation before comparing peers. A high margin alone does not establish stronger performance if revenue is contracting or the service mix differs.

Wipro reported IT Services operating profit at 17.22% of revenue for FY2026. The company identifies utilization, workforce mix, pricing, automation, and a shift toward higher-value work as margin levers; these are management explanations and priorities, not independent evidence that each lever has delivered results. Wipro FY2026 Form 20-F

Do not substitute one kind of margin for another. DXC’s FY2026 results release reports segment margins and separately identifies adjusted EBIT margin, so a peer comparison needs to state which measure is being used. DXC FY2026 results release

Use bookings and book-to-bill as demand signals

Bookings generally represent newly signed or adjusted work under a company’s own methodology. Book-to-bill usually compares bookings with revenue for a period, but the precise calculation and treatment of scope changes can differ. Check each company’s definition and review several periods: a large contract or one unusual quarter can distort a single reading. Then test whether bookings are showing up as recognized revenue and margin.

Wipro defines large deals as those with total contract value (TCV) of at least US$30 million. For FY2026, it reported large-deal order bookings of US$7,829 million, up 45.8% from US$5,368 million in FY2025, and total order bookings of US$16,449 million, up 14.9% from US$14,315 million. These are company-reported booking values measured in TCV, not revenue recognized in those periods. Wipro FY2026 Form 20-F

Definitions deserve close attention. ASGN says its consulting book-to-bill ratio compares consulting bookings with related revenues for a specified period. Its SEC filing also explains that bookings rely on estimates and judgments, are not calculated under an independent standard, and do not assure future revenue. Test backlog quality and conversion

Backlog is not interchangeable across companies. Before treating it as evidence of future work, find out what qualifies for inclusion and whether customer authorization and funding are in place. Look for expected conversion timing, as well as disclosures about cancellations, scope changes, and currency effects.

  • Definition: What contracts, options, or work are included?
  • Readiness: Is the work authorized and funded, or does it depend on further customer action?
  • Timing: When does the company expect backlog to convert into revenue?
  • Uncertainty: Can work be cancelled or modified, and how do foreign exchange movements affect the reported amount?

A 2025 SEC-filed annual report warns that the company’s bookings and backlog methods may not be comparable with other companies. It also notes that backlog can be cancelled or modified, vary significantly between periods, and be affected by currency movements; short-term changes in bookings may not indicate a material trend. Apply those cautions, but verify the target company’s own definitions and disclosures. SEC-filed 2025 annual report, Bookings and Backlog section

Build a like-for-like comparison

For two or more providers, compare the same reporting periods and business scope. A compact checklist helps expose mismatches before a headline number drives the judgment:

  • Revenue growth: reported and organic or constant-currency, where available.
  • Profitability: operating or segment margin level and multi-period direction, on a consistent basis.
  • Demand: bookings and book-to-bill across several periods, with each company’s definition.
  • Backlog: definition, expected conversion window, and disclosed funding, cancellation, scope, and currency risks.
  • Mix: service and segment composition, since consolidated results can hide diverging business lines.

There is no established universal public standard for company-reported bookings or book-to-bill calculations, and the cited figures do not establish a sector-wide average. Keep company-specific definitions attached to every comparison; do not treat TCV, bookings, backlog, or pipeline as recognized or certain future revenue.
