To evaluate HPE stock, examine revenue growth alongside business mix, compare GAAP margins with clearly reconciled non-GAAP figures, read debt and cash from the same balance-sheet date, and track operating and free cash flow across multiple periods. HPE’s Q3 FY2026 results, for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, showed strong reported growth and improved margins; its weaker FY2025 annual results and acquisition effects are important context. These financial measures help assess the business, but do not establish whether the shares are attractively valued.

Start with the reporting period and accounting basis

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) reports on a fiscal year ending October 31. The latest figures covered here are for Q3 FY2026, the three months ended July 31, 2026, and the first nine months of that fiscal year. FY2025 refers to the year ended October 31, 2025. Amounts are U.S. dollars.

When comparing results, match the period and measure: quarterly with quarterly, year-to-date with the same year-to-date period, and GAAP with GAAP. HPE also reports non-GAAP measures, which exclude specified costs. They can help show operating trends, but should not be treated as interchangeable with GAAP results.

How fast is HPE growing, and where is growth coming from?

HPE reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $12.213 billion, up 33.7% from $9.136 billion a year earlier. For the first nine months of FY2026, revenue was $32.192 billion, up 30.8% from $24.617 billion. Those are reported figures; neither growth rate by itself says how much growth will persist. Segment mix and acquisition effects matter. HPE’s Q3 FY2026 results provide the underlying financial statements and segment figures.

Q3 revenue by segment helps explain the consolidated result:

Segment Q3 FY2026 revenue Year-over-year change Segment operating margin
Cloud & AI $9.0 billion Up 25.4% 17.0%
Networking $2.9 billion Up 74.9% 22.0%
Storage $1.3 billion Up 10.2% not stated in HPE’s Q3 FY2026 results
Financial Services $0.9 billion Down 0.3% not stated in HPE’s Q3 FY2026 results

Cloud & AI includes Server, which generated $6.8 billion, up 35.3%, and Storage. Within Networking, Data Center Networking revenue rose 112.2% to $382 million, while Routing rose 270.0% to $788 million. These subcategory growth rates describe this quarter, not a forecast.

Reported Networking growth is particularly sensitive to the comparison basis. HPE’s Q3 earnings presentation says its normalized Networking comparison includes eight months of pre-acquisition Juniper Networks results. The reported rate and normalized rate answer different questions; identify which one is being used rather than treating them as equivalent. See HPE’s Q3 FY2026 earnings presentation for its comparison methodology.

Are margins improving on a comparable basis?

In Q3 FY2026, HPE reported a GAAP gross margin of 40.1% and GAAP operating margin of 11.4%. Its non-GAAP gross margin was 40.4%, and non-GAAP operating margin was 16.2%. The two bases should remain separate in any comparison.

Measure Q3 FY2026 Year-over-year change Sequential change
GAAP gross margin 40.1% Up 10.9 percentage points Up 3.6 percentage points
Non-GAAP gross margin 40.4% Up 10.5 percentage points Up 3.5 percentage points
GAAP operating margin 11.4% Up 8.7 percentage points Up 4.4 percentage points
Non-GAAP operating margin 16.2% Up 7.7 percentage points Up 2.9 percentage points

HPE said pricing discipline and favorable mix contributed to its record non-GAAP gross margin. That is management’s explanation, not an independent assessment. HPE’s non-GAAP reconciliations add back specified items including amortization of intangible assets, stock-based compensation, cost-reduction program costs, and acquisition, disposition, and other charges. Review the reconciliation and whether adjustments recur before relying on an adjusted trend; HPE’s results release provides the reconciliations.

Segment operating margins add detail but are not consolidated GAAP operating margins. In Q3 FY2026, Cloud & AI’s segment margin was 17.0%, up from 7.0% a year earlier. Networking’s was 22.0%, compared with 22.1%. Corporate Investments and Other was negative 24.1%, compared with negative 7.0%. For the first nine months of FY2026, Cloud & AI’s segment margin was 13.6%, up from 7.3%; Networking’s was 22.4%, down from 25.1%.

What do the annual results add to the picture?

A strong quarter should be considered against the full-year baseline. HPE’s FY2025 Form 10-K reported $34.296 billion in revenue, gross margin of 30.3%, and an operating loss of $437 million, equivalent to a negative 1.3% operating margin. In FY2024, revenue was $30.127 billion, gross margin was 32.8%, and operating margin was 7.3%.

Fiscal year Revenue Gross margin Operating margin Operating cash flow Free cash flow
FY2024, year ended October 31, 2024 $30.127 billion 32.8% 7.3% $4.341 billion $2.297 billion
FY2025, year ended October 31, 2025 $34.296 billion 30.3% negative 1.3% $2.919 billion $986 million

HPE attributed FY2025 revenue growth primarily to higher Networking revenue from the merger and higher average unit prices in Server. It attributed the gross-margin decline partly to higher cost of sales in Server, Networking, and Hybrid Cloud, and the operating-margin decline to goodwill impairment and merger costs. These explanations distinguish reported results from underlying business conditions, but do not erase the GAAP outcome. The FY2025 Form 10-K and annual reports contain the full statements and discussion.

How much debt does HPE carry, and what cash is available?

Use the balance-sheet date when discussing debt and cash. At July 31, 2026, HPE reported $2.901 billion of notes payable and short-term borrowings, $17.343 billion of long-term debt, and $6.216 billion of cash and cash equivalents. Adding the two reported debt lines gives $20.244 billion of gross debt; subtracting cash gives approximately $14.028 billion.

The $14.028 billion figure is a simple calculation from selected balance-sheet lines, not a company-reported net-debt measure or a full liquidity assessment. Cash and cash equivalents do not by themselves disclose borrowing availability, debt maturities, covenants, or refinancing terms.

For historical context, HPE’s FY2025 annual report showed total debt of $22.365 billion and cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash of $5.859 billion at October 31, 2025. The cash line differs from the Q3 FY2026 cash-and-cash-equivalents figure, so do not read the two snapshots as perfectly identical measures. The cited figures do not establish debt maturities, covenants, refinancing terms, or credit-rating implications.

Is cash generation keeping pace with reported earnings?

Operating cash flow shows cash generated by operations; free cash flow (FCF) is a company-defined non-GAAP measure. HPE defines FCF as operating cash flow less net capital expenditures. Its reconciliation also accounts for investment in property, plant and equipment and software assets, proceeds from asset sales, and exchange-rate effects. Check HPE’s stated definition and reconciliation when comparing FCF across periods or with another company.

Period Operating cash flow Free cash flow
Q3 FY2026, three months ended July 31, 2026 $1.6 billion $958 million
First nine months of FY2026, ended July 31, 2026 $4.229 billion $2.581 billion
FY2025, year ended October 31, 2025 $2.919 billion $986 million
FY2024, year ended October 31, 2024 $4.341 billion $2.297 billion

FY2025 operating cash flow fell from FY2024. HPE said the decrease was primarily due to unfavorable working capital, largely resulting from the timing of vendor payments. Working-capital swings can affect a period’s cash conversion, so evaluate cash flow across multiple periods and alongside capital investment rather than treating a single quarter or year as a durable run rate.

What this analysis can—and cannot—tell you about HPE stock

The figures support an operating and balance-sheet assessment: reported Q3 FY2026 revenue growth was strong, consolidated margins improved, and cash generation was positive. The annual comparison also shows weaker FY2025 margins and cash flow, while debt remains material relative to reported cash. Segment performance, acquisition-related comparisons, recurring adjustment items, and working-capital changes all affect how those results should be interpreted.

Financial statements alone do not establish whether HPE shares are cheap or expensive. A stock valuation also requires a current share price and a method such as comparing market value with earnings, cash flow, or peers; the figures here do not provide that analysis. HPE’s outlook and shareholder-return plans are forward-looking company statements, not realized results, and should be checked against newer disclosures before being used in an investment decision.
