There is no established evidence that one buyer determines Ethereum’s market price, and no validated concentration threshold that makes ETH risk “dangerous.” To evaluate a claim about a dominant buyer, separate ownership from wallet addresses, transfers from trades, and institutional product flows from the wider market. Then check whether any large-holder activity coincides with repeatable price or volatility changes—and whether liquidity or leverage could explain the move.

First define what “one buyer” means

The phrase can refer to very different things: a person or organization’s beneficial ownership, a wallet address, an exchange’s customer balances, staking activity, a corporate treasury, ETF share creations or redemptions, or purchases during a particular time window. These measures are not interchangeable. A claim about one of them does not automatically establish the others.

For example, a wallet label or balance distribution may show activity associated with an address category, but it does not necessarily identify the beneficial owner behind an address. Likewise, an institutional product’s share activity does not reveal all the ultimate owners or buyers of its underlying ETH.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—show

Address distribution is not a register of people

A 2025 study in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications examined more than 98 million unique Ethereum addresses, with dataset coverage from July 2015 through December 2024. It distinguishes categories including centralized exchanges, DeFi, and staking. That is useful historical evidence about addresses and supply distribution, but an address count is not a count of independent buyers or beneficial owners, and the dataset is not a live ownership register.

Transfers to exchanges are not executed sales

CryptoQuant defines exchange inflow as the amount transferred into exchange wallets during a given period. Its interpretation is that higher inflows have historically been associated with possible sell pressure; the transfer itself does not prove that the ETH was sold. CryptoQuant also cautions that USD-valued reserves can rise because ETH’s price appreciated, as well as because more coins arrived.

Studies find different things in different settings

A Philadelphia Fed working-paper summary dated September 2026 reports that whale alerts heavily reshaped native Bitcoin participation, while ETH and WBTC participant profiles on the Ethereum platform remained highly stable; it also reports compressed Ethereum-platform volatility around those alerts. That result does not establish that large ETH transactions never affect price.

A separate Philadelphia Fed summary, revised in December 2025, reports that large ETH holders tended to increase holdings before price increases while smaller holders tended to reduce holdings. Its analysis attributes ETH return volatility more to small retail investors than to whales. These are findings from distinct research designs and samples, not a universal rule that large holders predict price or that retail activity always drives volatility.

Ethereum market structure can concentrate intermediation without proving buyer dominance

Federal Reserve Bank of New York Staff Report 1102, revised in 2025, estimates that a 1% increase in the value of private information causally increases an intermediary’s profit share by 0.57% in the Ethereum intermediation setting it studies. This concerns intermediation and market structure; it is not an estimate of one buyer’s share of ETH ownership or purchases.

A practical method for evaluating a concentration claim

  1. Write down the exact claim and its time window

Specify whether the claim is about beneficial ownership, an address cluster, exchange balances, staking, a company, ETF activity, or market purchases. Record the dates, units, source, and classification method for each observation. Without those details, apparently comparable figures may measure different things.

  2. Check the holder metric’s categories and coverage

Ask what an address represents, whether exchange, DeFi, and staking-related addresses are separated, and how current the data is. Treat address counts and balance bands as evidence about on-chain distribution—not a direct count of independent people or a complete ownership map.

    • SEAMLESS FIRMWARE UPDATES & 30-DAY MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE — Apply security updates without resetting your wallet or migrating funds. Backed by Amazon's 30-day money-back guarantee — your purchase is risk-free.
  3. Follow flows by destination and unit

Separate transfers to exchanges from flows to staking or DeFi, and distinguish ETH amounts from USD-valued balances. Compare a short spike with longer-period trends: a single transfer can reflect custody changes or internal wallet movement. Even an exchange inflow remains a transfer observation until there is evidence of a trade.

  4. Look for a market response, not just a large transaction

Align the activity with contemporaneous ETH price, trading activity, and volatility. Ask whether a similar association appears repeatedly, and consider alternative explanations. A whale alert occurring near a price move is not, on its own, evidence that the alert caused the move.

  5. Check whether market conditions could amplify the move

Consider liquidity, leverage, forced liquidations, exchange operations, and pricing mechanisms alongside holder activity. ESMA’s 2026 risk monitor describes the October 2025 crypto-market dislocation, estimating USD 19 billion in crypto-derivative liquidations and identifying thin liquidity, elevated leverage, exchange-operational weaknesses, and pricing mechanisms as vulnerabilities. This broad crypto-market event is context for amplification risk, not proof of an Ethereum-specific buyer effect.

  6. Read institutional-product data as a partial view

Product filings can show how ETH’s price and share activity affected a product’s assets, but do not by themselves identify the ultimate beneficial owners behind creations or redemptions. Use that data as one part of the picture rather than a complete account of buyers and sellers.

How to compare the evidence

Evidence axis What to examine Main limitation
Holder distribution Balance bands, address categories, dates, and data coverage Addresses are not equivalent to independent people or beneficial owners. The 2025 Humanities and Social Sciences Communications study covers data through December 2024.
Flow destination Transfers to exchanges, staking, or DeFi; coin units and USD valuation A transfer does not establish a trade; USD reserve values also move with price. CryptoQuant’s exchange-inflow measure concerns transfers into exchange wallets.
Price and volatility response Timing, magnitude, repeatability, and alternative explanations A coincident whale alert does not prove causality; the Philadelphia Fed summaries dated September 2026 and revised December 2025 report different findings from different settings.
Market structure Available liquidity, leverage, liquidation cascades, and exchange function ESMA’s October 2025 dislocation figures describe a broad crypto-market incident, not an ETH-specific cause.
Institutional-product data ETH exposure, creations or redemptions, net asset value, and reporting date Product flows are not a complete view of all buyers and sellers.
Research design Sample, observation dates, asset, and measured outcome A result from one study should not be generalized beyond its setting.

What recent ETH declines tell you about risk

The SEC-filed iShares Ethereum Trust report says ether fell from $2,971.55 on December 31, 2025, to $1,593.01 on June 30, 2026—a 46.39% decline over that reporting period. It is a historical, period-specific figure, not a forecast or evidence that a single buyer caused the decline. The filing also states: “The trading prices of many digital assets, including ether, have experienced extreme volatility in recent periods and may continue to do so.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the second quarter of 2026, the filing reports that ether’s price declined 24.21% and the Trust’s net asset value fell 32.70%, with share redemptions also affecting the net-asset result. Those figures describe the Trust’s reported experience during that quarter; they do not identify who held the shares or establish a market-wide buyer concentration.

What a sound conclusion looks like

A defensible assessment says what was measured, for which dates, and what the evidence does not show. The reviewed evidence does not identify a current buyer as controlling or determining ETH’s market price; it does not supply a universal concentration cutoff, prove that exchange-bound ETH was sold, or provide a price forecast. Treat a “one buyer” explanation as a hypothesis to test against ownership definitions, flow destinations, market response, and liquidity conditions—not as a risk measure by itself.
