A green search engine is a search service that says it directs some of its business revenue or operations toward environmental aims, such as climate projects, biodiversity work, or renewable energy. The label is not a universal certification or a guarantee that each search has a lower environmental footprint. To assess a service, look separately at what it funds, what it reports, which providers supply results and ads, how it handles data, and how well its environmental claims are evidenced.

What makes a search engine “green”?

There is no single standard in the sources cited here that certifies a search engine as green. The term describes a service’s stated environmental commitments, not a verified rating of its total impact. A company might fund environmental projects, invest in renewable energy, or do both; those activities do not by themselves establish the net footprint of its search infrastructure or of an individual query.

  • Funding: What revenue or profits support environmental work, and what does the company disclose about the amounts and recipients?
  • Energy: Does the service describe renewable-energy generation or procurement, and does it explain which operations and time period the claim covers?
  • Search infrastructure: Does it operate its own index, or rely on other providers for search results and advertising?
  • Privacy: What information does the service receive, and what role do its search and ad partners play?
  • AI features: Are AI summaries or chat included, can users turn them off, and is any energy comparison independently supported?

These are practical comparison questions, not a formal rating system.

How Ecosia says it funds environmental work

Ecosia is a prominent example of a service that presents itself as an environmental search engine. It says advertisers pay for search ads and advertising partners share revenue with Ecosia. After operating costs, the company says profits support tree-planting and other climate or biodiversity projects. Its explanation of this model is available in its search-engine explainer and help page about search ads.

Ecosia’s homepage says it directs “100% of profits for the planet,” with most going to tree-planting projects, and says it invests in renewable energy. The company also says it publishes monthly financial reports. These are Ecosia’s statements about its mission and operations; they are not a calculation of the environmental impact of each search. For current financial details, consult its homepage and linked reports.

Does Ecosia use Google or Bing?

Yes, its privacy policy says Ecosia works with Microsoft Bing or Google to provide search results and ads. That means Ecosia’s environmental funding model and its search-provider arrangements are distinct questions: its stated mission does not mean it supplies every part of the search service itself. When evaluating privacy, consider the policy of Ecosia as well as the partners involved in fulfilling searches. See Ecosia’s privacy policy.

What Ecosia says about privacy

Ecosia says it collects data needed to provide search, does not use search data to personalize advertising elsewhere, and does not combine data across platforms to build a personal profile. Its help center says the service and its partners receive search terms and IP addresses. Retention and anonymization details can change, so use the live privacy policy for the current terms rather than relying on a fixed retention period.

What the green leaf marker means

Ecosia’s Green Search feature highlights websites it identifies as belonging to planet-friendly organizations. Ecosia says it draws on ecological labels and certifications where appropriate, and has said the highlights are not ads or paid search placements. The marker is the service’s informational feature; it should not be read as proof that every highlighted organization has passed a comprehensive independent audit. See Ecosia’s Green Search announcement.

Can you turn off AI search in Ecosia?

Ecosia announced an AI-free searching setting on July 2, 2026, for disabling AI features including AI Overviews and AI chat. The company says the control is under Profile > Settings. Ecosia also makes claims about the energy efficiency of its model and its clean-energy generation relative to AI use; those claims are company statements, not an independent lifecycle comparison. Details are in its AI-free search announcement.

How to decide whether a service fits your priorities

  1. Read the funding explanation. Identify what the company says it funds and whether it distinguishes revenue from profits after costs.
  2. Check the reporting. Look for recurring financial or impact reports, and note what they do and do not measure.
  3. Trace the search supply chain. Find out whether other companies provide results or ads; their role can matter to privacy and infrastructure claims.
  4. Review privacy and AI controls. Check the live policy for data handling, and verify whether AI features can be disabled if that matters to you.
  5. Keep the claim in scope. Environmental donations or renewable-energy investments are relevant, but they do not alone prove a lower net footprint per search.
