To evaluate an NBFC’s quarterly results, check asset growth and AUM alongside loan quality, provisions, profitability, funding, liquidity and capital. First identify what the lender does and which regulatory category applies; then compare its reported figures with its own history and with genuinely comparable peers. There is no single AUM definition or universal performance benchmark for every NBFC, so issuer definitions and consistent reporting bases matter.

1. Identify the NBFC’s business and regulatory context

Before comparing numbers, establish what the company lends against, who its customers are and which products make up its portfolio. A vehicle lender, housing finance company and unsecured consumer lender do not have identical risk profiles, so headline growth or delinquency figures are not directly comparable without context.

  • Check whether the results are standalone or consolidated, and keep that basis consistent across periods.
  • Identify the portfolio mix, customer segments, collateral and any meaningful changes during the quarter.
  • Check the company’s RBI category and applicable regulatory layer. Requirements for capital, asset classification, liquidity and accounting can vary; do not apply a threshold or rule for one NBFC class to another.

The RBI’s NBFC regulatory overview describes these category-specific differences and relevant risk and disclosure areas.

2. Evaluate asset growth and AUM

Read the issuer’s AUM definition before treating the headline figure as comparable to loans outstanding. AUM is a company-reported measure, and there is no single universal definition established for every NBFC. Where the disclosures permit, reconcile AUM with on-balance-sheet loans and any managed or transferred portfolio.

Questions to ask about growth

  • How did AUM and loans change quarter on quarter and year on year?
  • Does growth persist across several periods, or is it concentrated in one quarter?
  • Did growth come from new originations, a shift in product mix, an acquisition, securitisation or assignment?
  • Did the company change its AUM definition or the assets it includes?

Use the financial statements and notes alongside any investor presentation. If the measure’s scope changes, a growth rate may not represent like-for-like portfolio expansion.

3. Test growth against loan quality

A growing book is not, by itself, evidence of improving performance. Check whether collections, delinquencies and stressed accounts are moving in a direction consistent with the pace and type of growth.

Loan-quality indicators to review

  • Gross and net non-performing assets (NPAs), including the definitions and denominators used.
  • Overdue or special-mention buckets, if disclosed, and whether accounts are migrating into more serious stress.
  • Collections, write-offs and recoveries, read together rather than as isolated headline figures.
  • Restructured accounts and other disclosed stressed exposures.

The RBI’s 2025 directions on income recognition, asset classification and provisioning specify asset classes and state that classification is borrower-wise rather than facility-wise. They also say that rescheduling alone does not support upgrading an asset, subject to applicable stressed-asset resolution requirements. Apply the directions relevant to the company’s category and exposure; do not assume every rule applies to every NBFC.

4. Read provisions and credit costs in portfolio context

Interpret provisions, credit cost and coverage measures alongside portfolio growth, delinquencies, write-offs, collateral and recoveries. A provision figure on its own does not show whether the lender has allowed adequately for emerging risk.

For an NBFC applying Ind AS, review the expected-credit-loss assumptions and, where disclosed, how accounting provisions compare with the applicable prudential treatment. The RBI overview explains that Ind AS introduces expected credit loss and that a prudential floor is used. It also notes that judgment in principle-based accounting can reduce comparability. Provisioning requirements depend on the applicable category, asset class and collateral recoverability.

5. Understand what drove profitability

Look at the path from interest income to profit rather than relying on a single earnings headline. Compare yields and interest income with funding costs, operating expenses, credit costs and tax. Separate recurring operating performance from one-off gains, recoveries or accounting effects.

There is no company-specific margin benchmark established here. Make those comparisons using the issuer’s own history and peers with similar products, borrower segments and risk profiles, rather than treating one NBFC’s margin as a universal target.

6. Check whether funding, liquidity and capital can support growth

Fast expansion can increase funding needs and make a lender more exposed to tighter market access or higher credit costs. Review the company’s borrowing sources, maturity profile, cost of funds, liquidity buffers, concentration and applicable capital or leverage measures. Ask whether the funding and capital position could support the reported growth if conditions worsen.

The RBI identifies counterparty failures, funding and asset concentration, interest-rate movements, liquidity and solvency among NBFC risks. Its framework also makes clear that capital and liquidity requirements vary across categories. Use the requirements that apply to the company rather than a sector-wide assumption.

7. Read disclosures beyond the headline presentation

Use the financial statements, notes and management commentary to verify the headline figures. Review auditor observations, risk management and asset-liability management disclosures, along with capital, NPA and provisioning information and any material regulatory or accounting changes. The RBI overview identifies these as relevant disclosure areas.

For each key number, note its definition, reporting basis and period. If a presentation’s AUM or growth figure does not align with the accounts, look for an explanation in the issuer’s notes rather than assuming the measures are equivalent.

How to compare periods and peers

Use quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year movements to understand recent direction, then check several periods for a sustained trend. Keep the comparison basis consistent: standalone or consolidated, on-book or managed assets, fiscal period, portfolio definition and accounting treatment.

For peer comparisons, prefer lenders with similar products, borrower segments, collateral, portfolio seasoning and regulatory treatment. Compare the following dimensions as an analytical framework, not as regulator-prescribed ranking criteria:

  • Asset growth, AUM definition and portfolio mix.
  • Collections, delinquency trends and stressed-account movement.
  • Gross and net NPAs, provisions and credit cost.
  • Profitability and the drivers behind it.
  • Borrowing mix, funding cost, liquidity, capital and concentration.
  • Disclosure quality and consistency of accounting and reporting bases.

RBI’s NBFC overview describes the risks and disclosure areas that inform this framework; its directions cover asset classification and provisioning. Company-specific AUM definitions, results and ratios must be verified in the issuer’s own filings. No universal sector performance statistic or benchmark is established by these sources.
