To evaluate an exchange stock, look beyond trading volume: separate transaction-based revenue from listings, market data, connectivity and other services; test how fees, rebates and product mix affect reported growth; map the company’s regulated activities; and assess clearing, technology, cybersecurity and competitive risks. These checks explain the business model, but they do not establish whether a particular share is fairly valued.
Start with how the exchange makes money
Read the company’s latest annual report and separate its revenue streams rather than treating the operator as a single trading-volume business. Categories and segment labels differ by company. Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), for example, describes futures and options trading and clearing, cash-equity execution, listings, and data and connectivity services in its 2025 Form 10-K (SEC filing).
Transaction and clearing fees
Check contract or trade volumes, products traded, fee rates, discounts and rebates. These factors can change revenue even when headline activity appears stable. CME Group says most of its revenue comes from clearing and transaction fees, and that revenue and profitability fluctuate with contract volume. Its 2024 Form 10-K describes fees that include electronic trading, privately negotiated transaction surcharges and other volume-related charges (SEC filing).
Listings, data and connectivity
For listings, review new listings, renewals, delistings, fee terms and recognition timing. ICE describes original and annual listing fees, with listing-related obligations allocated and recognized over time. For data and connectivity, examine what customers buy, subscription and usage terms, renewals and reported growth. ICE says these services are primarily subscription-based and recognizes data subscriptions over the service period.

Clearing and other services
Determine which business lines include clearing, who pays the fees, and whether reported amounts are net of rebates or other offsets. For example, ICE reports futures and options fees net of rebates. The presentation affects how revenue growth should be interpreted; compare definitions and accounting policies before comparing companies.
ICE reported futures and options rebates of $1.6 billion in 2025, $1.3 billion in 2024 and $928 million in 2023 in its 2025 Form 10-K. Those figures illustrate one company’s reporting and are not a sector-wide benchmark.

Test the quality and sensitivity of revenue
Classify each disclosed stream as transaction-led, subscription-based, listing-related or another type, then ask what could make it grow or shrink. A larger subscription share may make reported revenue less directly tied to daily trading activity, but the label alone does not establish customer retention, pricing power or future growth. Look for the issuer’s definitions, renewal information and revenue-recognition policies.
- Activity and mix: Are volumes growing, and are customers trading products with different fee economics?
- Pricing and offsets: Are fee rates, discounts or rebates changing? Are fees presented gross or net of rebates?
- Timing: Are listing or subscription obligations recognized over time, and have accounting or contract terms changed?
- Other costs: Do disclosed pass-through costs or service costs affect the relationship between revenue and profitability?
Map regulation to the actual businesses
An exchange group can operate different legal entities and activities under different rules. Identify each subsidiary’s activity, product and jurisdiction before drawing conclusions about regulatory exposure. CME’s 2024 Form 10-K describes CFTC regulation of its U.S. futures exchanges and derivatives clearing business, as well as additional CFTC and Federal Reserve oversight associated with specified systemically important designations. It also discusses non-U.S. regulators relevant to its global operations (SEC filing).

For each relevant activity, examine the company’s disclosures about registration, surveillance, reporting, capital, clearing and other obligations. Ask how changes to rules or taxes could affect costs, permitted products or customer behavior. Requirements should not be generalized from one exchange operator to another: the relevant authorities and obligations depend on the business and jurisdiction.
Assess the risks that can impair the business
Volume and product mix
Lower trading activity can reduce transaction and clearing fees; a shift between products can also change economics even if total volume holds up. CME identifies contract volume as a factor in revenue and profitability. Compare activity and product mix with the fee disclosures rather than treating total volume as a complete indicator.

Regulatory change
Changes to rules, oversight or taxes may alter costs, products or customer behavior. Review the issuer’s own risk factors and regulatory discussion to identify which businesses and jurisdictions are exposed. CME and Cboe discuss regulatory risks in their filings.
Technology, cybersecurity and continuity
Exchanges rely on systems that must handle ordinary and peak demand. Check disclosures about capacity, outages, cyber threats, incident response and recovery arrangements. Cboe’s 2024 Form 10-K identifies system capacity and security vulnerabilities among its risks (SEC filing).

Clearing and counterparty exposure
If the group operates a clearinghouse, examine its risk controls, member exposures, liquidity and default arrangements. Clearing can be a source of fees, but it also brings responsibilities and exposures that should be evaluated separately from venue operations. CME describes oversight of clearing and settlement activities; Cboe identifies clearinghouse exposures in its risk disclosures.
Competition and dependence
Consider competing venues and services, substitutes for data or technology products, reliance on key customers and dependence on third parties. Cboe names competition and third-party dependence as risks. Assess whether the company’s own disclosures identify meaningful concentration or alternatives rather than assuming that a well-known exchange has an unassailable position.

When comparing two or more exchange companies, use the same questions for each. Reported segments may differ, so map their disclosures into comparable categories before interpreting a difference as a business advantage.
| Comparison axis | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Revenue mix | Transaction and clearing fees versus listings, data, connectivity and other services. |
| Volume sensitivity | Contract or trade volumes, product mix, fee schedules, discounts and rebates. |
| Revenue presentation | Whether figures are net of rebates or offsets, and when subscription or listing revenue is recognized. |
| Clearing footprint | Clearing activities, member exposures, liquidity and default arrangements. |
| Regulatory footprint | Relevant entities, products, jurisdictions, regulators and disclosed obligations. |
| Operational and competitive risks | System resilience, cybersecurity, competition and dependence on customers or third parties. |
Connect business quality to the share price
A sound operating business is not automatically an attractive stock at every price. After assessing its revenue drivers and risks, examine margins, cash generation, debt and capital allocation, then compare those results with the expectations implied by the current share price. That valuation step requires current company-specific financial and market data; the framework above does not determine a fair value or recommend a security.
