Start with the signed contract, the company’s role in the deal and its accounting framework—not the headline contract value. Then trace what the company promised, when it earns or incurs each amount, and how those amounts appear in revenue, costs, cash flow and the notes. Without the agreement and the relevant filings, no deal-specific revenue or profitability conclusion is supportable.
What do you need to establish first?
Before interpreting a figure, identify the reporting entity, reporting period, geography, accounting framework and the telecom company’s role. It might supply an AI service, buy one, or act as an intermediary or partner. These distinctions affect which accounting questions matter.
- Reporting entity and period: Confirm which company’s statements you are reading and whether they are annual or interim statements. Use the contract and filings that apply to that period.
- Role in the arrangement: Separate supplier-side revenue and contract-cost accounting from customer-side expenses, prepayments and commitments.
- Accounting framework: IFRS reporters apply IFRS 15 to customer contracts within its scope. U.S. GAAP reporters apply Topic 606 and other relevant U.S. GAAP guidance. Do not assume identical outcomes without analyzing the applicable requirements and facts.
- Evidence available: Obtain the signed agreement and amendments, pricing schedules, accounting policy, latest audited or interim statements, and relevant notes. A public announcement alone may not establish the contract’s detailed terms.
The IFRS Foundation describes IFRS 15’s objective as providing information about “the nature, amount, timing and uncertainty of revenue and cash flows arising from a contract with a customer.” That framing is useful: a revenue figure is only one part of the financial effect.

How does an AI services contract become recognized revenue?
Under IFRS 15, the core principle is to recognize revenue to depict the transfer of promised goods or services in an amount reflecting the consideration the supplier expects in exchange. The standard’s five-step model provides a disciplined way to analyze the contract:
#1 Best Overall
- Profitability calculations; cash flow function Calculates NPV and IRR for uneven cash flows
- Time-value-of-money and Amortization keys solve problems including: pension calculations, loans, mortgages, etc.
- Ideal calculator for students, managers and statisticians
- Built-in functionality : List-based one- and two-variable statistics with four regression options: linear, logarithmic, exponential and power
- The BA II Plus calculator is approved for use on the following professional exams: Chartered Financial Analyst exam. GARP Financial Risk Manager (FRM) exam. Certified Management Accountants exam
- Identify the contract with the customer, including relevant enforceable terms and amendments.
- Identify the performance obligations: determine which promised goods or services are distinct, rather than assuming “AI services” is one accounting unit.
- Determine the transaction price, including fixed and variable consideration subject to the applicable requirements.
- Allocate the transaction price to performance obligations using relative stand-alone selling prices, as required.
- Recognize revenue when or as each obligation is satisfied. If it is satisfied over time, use an appropriate measure of progress.
Apply the relevant requirements of the governing framework and the company’s facts; the IFRS model is not a substitute for checking U.S. GAAP when the issuer reports under U.S. GAAP.
Parse the actual promises
Read the contract to see whether it promises hosted access to a model or platform, implementation, configuration or customization, integration with network or customer systems, support, training, data processing, usage-based inference, model updates, a software license, or some combination. These are possibilities to investigate, not features that every AI contract contains.
For each promise, assess whether it is distinct or instead integrated or interdependent with other promises. That judgment can change how many performance obligations exist and when revenue is recognized. In its 2024 post-implementation review material, the IFRS Foundation reported that stakeholders found distinctions between licenses and cloud services complex and judgmental, particularly when promises may be interdependent.

Distinguish ongoing access from separate implementation
Continuous access to a hosted service may be recognized over time if the applicable criteria are met, using a measure of progress that faithfully depicts performance. Implementation or configuration may have a different pattern if it is a distinct obligation; if it is not distinct, its accounting follows the combined obligation. Do not infer a recognition pattern from labels such as “subscription,” “deployment” or “AI platform.”
One SEC-filed AI cloud-services example describes subscription access recognized over the contract term, usage-based services recognized in the month consumed, and estimated service-level credits treated as variable consideration. This illustrates questions to ask; it is one issuer’s policy, not authority for another company’s treatment.
Does the announced contract value equal revenue or cash?
No. A press-release value, contract ceiling, minimum commitment, bookings figure, backlog, remaining performance obligation, recognized revenue and cash collected are different measures. Determine what a disclosed figure means before using it, and do not substitute one for another.

Reconstruct the transaction price
Read the pricing schedules and amendments. Separate fixed payments from usage- or outcome-based charges, rebates, discounts, credits, penalties, price escalators, renewal pricing and termination payments. Under IFRS 15, variable consideration is estimated and included subject to the standard’s constraint; transaction-price allocation and subsequent changes follow the applicable requirements for allocations and contract modifications.

A useful analysis keeps four timelines distinct: when consideration is earned through performance, when an invoice is issued, when cash is received or paid, and when variable amounts such as credits are estimated or resolved. The statement notes may help explain differences among them.
Which costs and commitments belong in the analysis?
A deal that produces reported revenue can still carry substantial delivery costs or unavoidable commitments. Analyze supplier and customer accounting separately, then assess the commercial economics using figures the company actually discloses.

| Perspective | What to examine | Accounting question |
|---|---|---|
| Telecom company as supplier | Incremental sales or bidding costs; implementation and fulfilment costs; model/API usage; cloud compute and storage; integration; capacity; support; security; and migration. | Under IFRS 15, incremental costs of obtaining a customer contract are recognized as an asset when recovery is expected. Costs that would have been incurred regardless are generally expensed, except when explicitly chargeable to the customer regardless of whether the contract is obtained. Assess fulfilment costs against the standard’s criteria. |
| Telecom company as customer buying SaaS | Configuration or customization charges, access fees, advance payments and any separately promised implementation services. | IFRIC guidance says configuration or customization costs are expensed as the supplier performs distinct services. If the services are not distinct from the access right, the expense pattern follows the supplier’s access service; advance payment is a prepayment asset. This customer-side guidance is not supplier revenue accounting. |
| Either role, where relevant | Minimum purchase or take-or-pay terms, renewal obligations, termination payments, migration costs and other contractual commitments. | Assess whether the terms create a material commitment and where the issuer explains it. Required disclosure depends on the accounting regime, materiality and facts. |
For a supplier, build a contribution model only from contract or filing figures. Compare recognized revenue with direct and incremental delivery costs, then test base, lower-adoption, higher-usage, service-credit and termination cases. Label assumptions explicitly. If the necessary cost or usage data is not disclosed, say the margin cannot be established rather than inventing one.

What telecom-specific commercial risks can change the financial picture?
Accounting presentation does not prove that an AI service will deliver the expected operating benefit. Test the business case against measurable operational evidence and contractual protections.
- Baseline and attribution: Identify the pre-deployment operational baseline. Separate savings that reduce cash costs from capacity merely released, and distinguish incremental revenue attributable to the service from management targets.
- Adoption and unit economics: Check actual adoption evidence, inference cost per interaction or workload, peak-demand capacity and the effect of usage growth on delivery cost.
- Output controls: Assess model accuracy, human oversight and remedies for poor performance.
- Data and security: Review permitted data use and training rights, privacy controls, confidential-information exposure and security safeguards.
- Continuity and exit: Assess uptime commitments and service remedies, vendor concentration, fallback arrangements, migration requirements and exit costs.
- Contracted versus aspirational outcomes: Separate guaranteed payments and service levels from targets, forecasts and management estimates.
A telecom issuer’s 2025 filing describes selective, use-case-driven AI deployments in revenue assurance, customer engagement, operational support, fraud detection, smart voice and chatbot assistants, and workflow automation. The issuer said long-term commercial benefits were still being evaluated and identified uncertain demand and business cases, as well as risks involving inaccurate or biased outputs, confidential information, privacy, security, legal compliance and reputation. Those disclosures identify issues to test; they are not independent proof of success or failure for another deal.
A 2026 SEC-filed prospectus describes possible provider charges including subscriptions, usage-based fees and minimum purchase commitments, alongside risks involving platform availability, output quality, integration, telecommunications performance and regulation. Treat these as diligence prompts, not evidence that an unnamed agreement contains those terms.

Without a named company, signed agreement, accounting policy, reporting period, usage data, cost data and financial statements, it is not possible to establish a particular deal’s revenue-recognition pattern, quantified impact, materiality, margin or required disclosures. The conclusion for any real transaction depends on the complete contract, the applicable accounting framework and period, and evidence of performance and cash flows. For a company-specific assessment, use its latest audited or interim filings and the relevant accounting guidance, with qualified accounting advice where needed.
