Evaluate an AI company by tracing revenue to the way it is earned and collected, measuring the costs required to deliver it, and testing whether growth can translate into cash flow. Then compare its valuation with businesses that have similar revenue models, growth, margins, and capital needs. There is no reliable universal revenue multiple or gross-margin target for “AI companies”: a software vendor, an inference provider, and a hardware maker can have very different economics.
Start by identifying what the company sells
“AI revenue” is not one business model. A company might earn recurring subscription fees, charge for usage, license software, sell hardware or systems, provide maintenance, or bill for professional services. Some contracts combine several of these. Before judging growth or applying a multiple, identify the revenue streams and how each is recognized.
Build a revenue map
- Subscriptions or SaaS: Check contract length, renewal and cancellation terms, discounts, and whether customers are expanding their use.
- Usage-based services: Determine what triggers a charge, how variable usage is, and whether greater usage is profitable after inference and hosting costs.
- Licenses, hardware, and systems: Separate these sales from recurring software revenue and inspect delivery obligations and recognition timing.
- Maintenance and professional services: Assess whether these are recurring, how much labor they require, and whether services are necessary to win or retain software customers.
Read the audited income statement and revenue-recognition notes, then check customer concentration, reseller or channel exposure, contract terms, and the source of year-over-year growth. Separate organic growth from acquisitions and note any accounting or business-mix changes that make periods less comparable.
Reconcile reported revenue with cash and obligations
Compare revenue with cash collections, receivables, deferred revenue, and contract assets. A contract, invoice, or accounting entry does not by itself establish that cash has been collected or that revenue has been recognized. Inspect the performance obligations and cancellation terms behind large customer wins, especially when a deal combines software, support, and implementation.

C3.ai’s fiscal 2026 filing describes contracts that can combine software licenses, SaaS, maintenance and support, and professional services. Those elements can have different recognition timing and economics; the label “AI revenue” does not tell an investor which applies. (C3.ai, fiscal 2026 filing.)
One illustration of why mix matters: C3.ai reported that subscriptions were 84% of total revenue in fiscal 2025 and that subscription revenue grew 18% year over year, while professional-services revenue grew 89%. The different growth rates make the revenue mix important to understanding the headline result. (C3.ai, fiscal 2025 filing.)
Test gross margin against the cost to deliver
Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue, but a blended percentage can conceal substantial differences between subscriptions, usage-based inference, hardware, and services. Examine GAAP gross margin by stream where disclosed, and read the reconciliation if the company also emphasizes a non-GAAP measure.

Identify the costs behind each stream
- For cloud and inference services, look for data-center and cloud charges, reserved capacity, utilization, networking, power, and depreciation. Where disclosed, track cost per task, user, token, or customer over time.
- For software subscriptions, look for hosting, customer support, third-party model or cloud charges, and development costs recorded in cost of revenue.
- For hardware or systems, account for production and delivery costs, as well as any continuing infrastructure obligations.
- For services-heavy deals, include implementation labor and any prioritized engineering needed to deliver or retain a customer.
Ask whether the cost to serve a customer falls as usage or customer count grows. Rising usage can lift revenue and still pressure gross margin if compute capacity becomes more expensive or less efficiently utilized.
Company filings illustrate why reported margins are context, not sector targets:

These are company-specific results from different businesses and periods, not an apples-to-apples ranking or an AI-sector benchmark. Their value is in showing how business mix and delivery costs can move the reported margin.

Determine whether growth can produce cash
A strong gross margin does not establish profitability. Selling, research, and administrative costs can remain large, and infrastructure investment can absorb cash even when EBITDA looks favorable. Review operating expenses relative to revenue, while preserving the company’s definitions and including stock-based compensation in the analysis.

Assess operating leverage and funding needs
- Compare sales, research and development, and support costs with revenue growth. Ask whether these costs can scale more slowly without damaging the product, customer retention, or implementation quality.
- Use disclosed customer-acquisition costs and payback periods where available. If they are not disclosed, avoid presenting a proxy as a reported company metric.
- Reconcile adjusted profitability with GAAP results and cash flow. Stock compensation is non-cash in the period but dilutes shareholders.
- Review capital expenditure, leases, working capital, cash runway, debt maturities, and expected fundraising. EBITDA does not capture capital expenditure.
- For infrastructure-heavy businesses, estimate the cash committed to buying or reserving compute capacity before customer demand becomes collected revenue.
Company-specific filings can help identify which expenses are growing, but they do not establish a universal AI cost structure. The right analysis depends on what the issuer actually discloses and how its operations are financed.
Keep ARR, bookings, and backlog separate from revenue
Read the definitions and footnotes for annual recurring revenue (ARR), bookings, remaining performance obligations (RPO), backlog, pipeline, and adjusted revenue. Record whether each measure includes acquisitions or currency changes; whether it is annualized or point-in-time; and whether it represents a signed contract, a billed amount, delivered work, or recognized revenue.

Do not add ARR to recognized revenue, treat pipeline as sales, or assume a contract’s full face value will be recognized soon. Performance obligations, timing, usage, and cancellation terms affect what a company may recognize and when.
IBM’s 2025 filing defines ARR for its Software segment using recurring software revenue models and says ARR should be viewed independently of software revenue because the measure and its inputs may not represent revenue that will be recognized in the future. C3.ai’s fiscal 2025 filing likewise says RPO should be considered alongside revenue and other disclosed metrics; its fiscal 2026 filing describes contracts with multiple performance obligations. These are issuer-specific definitions and cautions, not interchangeable measures.

Enterprise value to forward revenue is often used for young or loss-making companies, but the multiple is meaningful only when its numerator, denominator, and comparison set are clear. State whether “forward” means the next fiscal year or next twelve months, and whether revenue is total or recurring, gross or net, and reported or adjusted.

Build a genuinely comparable peer group
Compare companies with similar revenue models, scale, growth durability, gross-margin profiles, capital intensity, customer concentration, and profitability trajectories. A software application vendor, model or API provider, cloud inference operator, and AI hardware company may all use AI, but that alone does not make their revenue multiples comparable.
When moving from enterprise value to equity value, account for net cash or debt and potential dilution. A low revenue multiple is not automatically cheap if growth is fragile, margins are deteriorating, or the business needs substantial new capital. A high one is not justified simply by a fast growth rate.
Model scenarios and work backward from the price
Run downside, base, and upside cases for growth, retention, pricing, inference and hosting costs, capacity utilization, sales efficiency, gross margin, and financing. Then reverse-engineer the growth and margin path implied by the current valuation: what revenue scale, profitability, and timing does the price require, and what evidence supports each assumption? If the valuation depends on reaching ambitious future scale while retaining a high multiple, it is especially sensitive to execution and market repricing.

TA Fintech Inc.’s 2026 SEC-filed management valuation discussion says “no single comparable is determinative,” and points to differences in scale, growth durability, gross margin, capital intensity—including AI inference and data costs—and profitability trajectory. It also notes that private financing valuations can differ from public-market valuations. Its illustrative assumptions—about $100 million of revenue at scale within 3–4 years and an approximately 8–12× forward-revenue range—are specific to that company’s management analysis, not a current market table or a typical AI-company multiple.

- Read the filings: Start with audited statements, revenue-recognition notes, and definitions of non-GAAP and forward-looking measures.

- Stress-test the price: Model downside, base, and upside cases, including dilution and capital needs, and identify the assumptions the current valuation requires.
