The right AI agent identity management platform gives every agent a distinct, attributable identity; issues credentials that are short-lived and narrowly scoped; enforces authorization at each tool and data boundary; preserves the human or service principal behind delegated work; and produces tamper-evident evidence of every important decision and result. A product label alone proves none of those capabilities.
Evaluate the platform as a control system, not as a directory for service accounts. NIST’s agent-identity concept work, its public-comment material, and the December 2025 initial preliminary draft of its AI Cybersecurity Framework Profile all treat agent identification, delegation, authorization, provenance, and prompt-injection impact as active design questions. Use those publications as evaluation criteria, while recognizing that no single settled “AI agent IAM” standard currently defines complete coverage.
What an AI agent identity platform must control
An AI agent is software that can interpret instructions, select tools, call APIs, retrieve data, and sometimes delegate subtasks. Its security identity must therefore describe more than the model or application that hosts it. You need to know which deployed instance or workload acted, who owns it, what purpose it serves, which environment it runs in, what authority it currently has, and whether another principal authorized the specific work.
Authentication answers “which entity is presenting a credential?” Authorization answers “may that entity perform this action on this resource under these conditions?” A platform that authenticates an agent but leaves broad, static permissions in place has not solved the central risk. The control plane must make an authorization decision for the particular tool call, API request, data access, or state-changing operation.

Evaluation dimensions and evidence to request
Use the same test cases against every candidate. Ask for a live demonstration or exportable evidence rather than accepting a feature name. The following dimensions cover the control objectives identified in NIST and OWASP guidance.
| Dimension | What to examine | Evidence of effective coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Identity inventory and ownership | Granularity, metadata, lifecycle status, orphan discovery, ephemeral identities | Inventory export, owner and purpose fields, unknown-agent report, decommission record |
| Authentication and credentials | Binding, short lifetime, rotation, revocation, sender constraints, workload verification | Credential timeline, failed-replay test, emergency revoke reaching active sessions |
| Authorization and enforcement | Default-deny behavior, tool/API/data boundaries, context-aware rechecks, external decision point | Denied calls, policy decision record, changed-scope reauthorization |
| Delegation and human context | Authority chain, on-behalf-of semantics, child-agent limits, trust-boundary transitions | Trace from human request to downstream action with constrained scope |
| Approvals and high-impact actions | Step-up authentication, clear request content, expiry, fail-closed behavior, fatigue controls | Approval record containing target, action, authority, approver, and expiration |
| Audit and incident response | Integrity, correlation, retention, export, policy and result metadata, revocation workflow | Reconstructed investigation and verifiable event chain |
| Prompt-injection resilience | Independent permission boundaries, tool scoping, secret protection, sensitive-action gates | Injection tests that cannot expand authority or expose protected data |
| Integration and maturity | Directory, workload identity, policy, secrets, cloud, tools, SIEM, standards fit | Architecture map, interoperability tests, documented limitations and roadmap status |
1. Build an identity inventory with accountable owners
Inventory persistent and ephemeral agents
Require a distinct identity for every deployed agent workload or instance that can independently access a resource. A shared human login, a generic “automation” account, or one token reused by many agents prevents reliable attribution and makes revocation dangerously broad. Decide how the platform represents short-lived task identities: as first-class records, child identities linked to a parent, or signed execution contexts. Whatever the model, an investigator must be able to distinguish two concurrent tasks and determine when each ceased to exist.
Test the metadata model
Ask the vendor to show fields for owner, business purpose, environment, capabilities, lifecycle state, deployment location, and model or runtime provenance where available. NIST’s concept work asks which metadata should be essential and whether it should be fixed or task-dependent; that remains an open design question, so evaluate flexibility rather than demanding an industry-standard field list. Check whether metadata is policy-addressable, exportable, and protected from alteration by the agent itself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Find unknown and orphaned identities
Seed a pilot with an intentionally unregistered workload, a retired deployment that still presents a credential, and an agent whose owner leaves the organization. The platform should surface unknown, inactive, expired, or ownerless identities, route them for disposition, and show the evidence used to make that determination. Ask how ownership transfers, how changes are approved, and whether discovery covers agents created outside the central deployment pipeline.
2. Trace authentication and the credential lifecycle
Follow credentials from deployment to shutdown
Document each stage: issuance, binding to a workload and execution context, presentation, renewal, rotation, expiration, suspension, and revocation. Prefer short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials over static, broad tokens. Cryptographic verification and sender constraints reduce replay risk; NIST’s public-comment summary identifies OAuth DPoP and mutual TLS with workload identity as mature building blocks, while noting that agent-specific profiles still need to bind identity, execution context, transaction, and delegation chain.

Verify workload binding and replay resistance
Capture a valid credential and attempt to replay it from an unapproved host, process, region, or runtime. A strong design rejects the presentation or at least triggers a policy decision because the credential is bound to the expected sender or workload. Determine whether the platform can distinguish a compromised agent instance from a legitimate replacement and whether it records the reason for a failed presentation.
Test emergency revocation
Revoke an agent while it holds an active session and while a long-running job is waiting to call a tool. Measure whether access stops immediately, at the next token exchange, or only after a fixed timeout. Require a documented maximum exposure window and a way to terminate outstanding sessions or delegated child work. OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard calls for short-lived, minimally scoped, cryptographically signed tokens in federated or multi-system deployments; ask the platform to show exactly how those properties are configured.

3. Evaluate authorization at the runtime boundary
Separate identity from permission
Authentication must not imply access. For each representative action, specify the agent identity, resource, operation, task purpose, environment, data sensitivity, time window, and originating authority. The policy engine should decide whether that combination is allowed. An agent must not be able to alter the policy or decision point that determines its own authority.
Test actual tools, APIs, data, and retrieval paths
Do not stop at a dashboard demonstration. Exercise read and write calls against production-like APIs, file stores, databases, retrieval indexes, queues, and administrative tools. Verify that an allow decision for one resource does not become a wildcard grant elsewhere, and that a denied tool call cannot be reproduced through an alternate connector. Check whether policies support explicit allow-lists and default-deny behavior for sensitive capabilities.
Force context changes
Change the task scope from read to write, move the job from test to production, add a new data classification, or introduce a higher-risk destination. The platform should re-evaluate authorization when permissions, task scope, identity attributes, or risk context changes. NIST IR 8596’s initial preliminary draft, control PR.AA-05, states: “AI systems should be treated separately from other types of entities within a network and require their own set of permissions and authorization policies.” OWASP guidance similarly calls for explicit allow-lists, default-deny controls, and isolation of the policy decision point.

4. Prove delegation and preserve human authority
Trace an on-behalf-of workflow
Use a real sequence: a human requests an outcome, an orchestrator plans it, a child agent performs a subtask, and a downstream tool changes data. Every hop should remain attributable. The resulting record should identify the originating human or service principal, the delegating component, the child identity, the scope granted, the policy decision, and the final resource affected.
Constrain child work
A delegated child must not silently gain broader authority than its parent. Test whether the platform can issue a child credential limited to a subset of resources, operations, records, and duration. Attempt to have the child create another child with expanded rights. The request should be denied or require a separately authorized delegation.
Handle trust-boundary changes
Require reauthorization when work crosses organizations, tenants, environments, or data classifications, or when a read-only task becomes a write operation. Ask how the platform represents delegated authority in tokens and logs and how it prevents an agent from substituting its own identity for the principal on whose behalf it acts. NIST explicitly identifies delegated authority and binding agent identity to human identity as questions under investigation, so treat support for these flows as a capability to verify rather than a presumed standard feature.
5. Design approvals for high-impact actions
Classify operations by consequence
Create a list specific to your environment: payments, privilege changes, account recovery, bulk deletion, production configuration, release deployment, and external communications may all warrant stronger controls. For each operation, define whether the agent may proceed autonomously, needs step-up authentication, requires a named approver, or must be prohibited.
Inspect the approval request
An approver should see the exact action, target resource, scope, reason, originating principal, effective permissions, expected impact, and expiration. The approval identifier must bind to the operation so it cannot be replayed for a different target. Test expiry, denial, approver substitution, and a changed request after approval. OWASP recommends step-up authentication for critical operations and fail-closed behavior when policy, approval, risk, or audit checks fail.

Avoid approval fatigue
Measure how many prompts a normal workflow generates and which events are grouped. NIST warns that repeated agent approval prompts can condition people to approve reflexively, weakening accountability. Prefer risk-based escalation, bounded batches with clear contents, and durable approvals for a narrowly defined scope rather than an endless stream of low-value confirmations.
6. Demand investigation-grade audit evidence
Reconstruct one action end to end
Ask the vendor to export records for a successful operation, a denied operation, an expired credential, and a revoked session. For each event, verify that you can identify the agent, workload instance, originating authority, effective permissions, policy version, approval identifier, resource, operation, timestamp, execution result, and error or refusal reason. OWASP recommends structured decision metadata for high-risk actions, including authorization outcome, approval identifier, execution result, and policy version.
Protect integrity and correlation
Logs should be tamper-evident or otherwise verifiable, with controlled time synchronization, immutable retention options, and integrity checks that an investigator can validate. Confirm correlation across the identity directory, policy engine, secrets system, cloud control plane, tool gateway, and SIEM. Ask whether records remain available after an agent is deleted and whether exports preserve relationships between parent and child actions.
Exercise response and recovery
Run an incident drill: identify suspicious activity, locate the responsible agent and authority chain, revoke credentials, stop delegated work, preserve evidence, and confirm that replacement credentials cannot resume the task without fresh authorization. NIST’s concept work emphasizes tamper-proof, verifiable action logs and binding actions back to human authorization; require a demonstrated workflow, not a statement that logs exist.
7. Test prompt-injection blast-radius controls
Use direct and indirect attacks
Place hostile instructions in a user prompt, retrieved document, web page, ticket, email, or tool response. Attempt to make the agent reveal secrets, call an unauthorized tool, alter policy, exfiltrate data, or escalate privileges. NIST places prompt-injection prevention and impact mitigation within the scope of its agent identity work.

Keep enforcement outside the model
Model instructions are not an authorization boundary. The gateway, policy decision point, tool broker, or data service must independently enforce identity, scope, and approval requirements. Remove a tool from the task, narrow its parameters, and retry the injection. A successful attack should at most produce a refused call, not a credential leak or an irreversible change.
Gate sensitive operations independently
Require separate checks for secrets access, privilege changes, bulk export, destructive actions, and external side effects. Verify that a prompt injection cannot manufacture an approval, alter the target after approval, or persuade a child agent to bypass the parent’s limits. Record blocked attempts so security teams can tune policies and investigate repeated abuse.
8. Assess integration and standards maturity
Map the control plane
Draw every integration the platform needs: directory and non-human identity store, workload identity provider, policy engine, secrets and key management, cloud control plane, tool and API gateways, data and retrieval systems, ticketing or approval service, and audit/SIEM stack. Identify where identity is translated, where authorization is decided, and where evidence can be lost.
Recommended Free Tools
Distinguish mature components from emerging profiles
Workload identities, sender-constrained credentials, authorization decision interfaces, event-sharing profiles, and provenance mechanisms have established building blocks. Agent-specific composition—especially binding identity to execution context, transaction, and delegation chain—remains an active area of development. NIST’s public-comment summary describes some agentic profiles as works in progress, while its cybersecurity blog characterizes agent authenticator work as early phase.
“Perhaps one of the most important actions any organization can take when preparing for the agentic future is to do a clear-eyed evaluation of its current IAM practices, systems, and capabilities against current standards and best practices.” — Bill Fisher, security engineer at NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence
Check deployment fit
Test cloud, on-premises, hybrid, and multi-tenant deployments that match your architecture. Confirm latency and availability behavior when the policy service is unreachable, how fail-closed decisions affect business continuity, and which functions require proprietary agents or gateways. Ask for documented interoperability constraints, supported protocol versions, export formats, and upgrade behavior before committing to a migration.
A practical evaluation procedure
- Define critical workflows. Select at least one read-only retrieval task, one write operation, one delegated multi-agent workflow, one high-impact action, and one long-running job.
- Inventory principals and resources. Record human requesters, orchestrators, child agents, tools, data stores, environments, and trust boundaries involved in each workflow.
- Write expected decisions. For every step, specify who may act, on which resource, with what operation, under what context, and for how long.
- Run lifecycle tests. Issue credentials, rotate them, replay them from the wrong context, revoke them during execution, and verify that child work stops when authority is withdrawn.
- Run authorization and injection tests. Change task scope, introduce hostile retrieved content, attempt alternate tools, and confirm that controls outside the model enforce the same limits.
- Reconstruct evidence. Export records for allowed, denied, expired, approved, and failed actions. Have an independent investigator follow the chain without vendor assistance.
- Score and document exceptions. Use a consistent scale: 0 means absent, 1 means stated but unverified, 2 means demonstrated with limitations, and 3 means demonstrated across the required workflows. Record compensating controls and residual exposure rather than averaging away a critical failure.
Questions to put in the procurement and architecture review
- Can every independently acting agent and ephemeral task be uniquely identified and linked to an owner?
- Which credential types are supported, how short can their lifetimes be, and how are they bound to workload and sender?
- What is the maximum revocation delay for active sessions, queued jobs, and delegated children?
- Where is the authorization decision point, and can the agent or its runtime alter it?
- Can policy express resource, operation, purpose, environment, data sensitivity, time, and originating authority?
- How are child-agent credentials derived, constrained, and prevented from expanding authority?
- What exactly does an approver see, how does approval expire, and how is the approved target cryptographically or logically bound to execution?
- Which fields are present in decision and execution events, how are they protected, and how are they exported to our SIEM?
- What happens when policy, approval, risk, audit, directory, or secrets services are unavailable?
- Which controls remain effective if an agent is manipulated by direct or indirect prompt injection?
- Which integrations use open protocols, which are proprietary, and which agent-specific capabilities are still on a roadmap?
Red flags that should stop a purchase
- A single shared service account or long-lived token represents many agents.
- The vendor treats authentication as equivalent to authorization.
- Permissions are granted only at application level, with no enforcement at tools, APIs, data, or retrieval boundaries.
- The agent can approve its own access, edit policy, or invoke an unrestricted administrative connector.
- Delegation records show only the last component and omit the human or service principal that initiated work.
- Revocation affects new tokens but not active sessions or queued delegated jobs, with no documented exposure window.
- Approval prompts omit the target, scope, authority, or expiration, or appear for so many routine actions that users are expected to click through them.
- Audit logs cannot show policy version, effective permissions, approval identifier, execution result, or integrity status.
- Prompt-injection defenses rely solely on system prompts, model behavior, or user training.
- Claims of “agent IAM” are not mapped to demonstrable controls, supported protocols, or tested integrations.
How to make the final decision
Select the platform that demonstrably reduces the authority and uncertainty of agent actions, even if it requires integrating several existing IAM components. Give priority to unique identities, short-lived and sender-constrained credentials, external policy enforcement, constrained delegation, proportionate approvals, and verifiable evidence. Treat convenience features, dashboards, and model-specific integrations as secondary until those controls pass your workflow tests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDocument every unsupported scenario and the compensating control you will operate. Reassess the design when agents gain new tools, cross trust boundaries, handle more sensitive data, or begin delegating tasks autonomously. The objective is not to predict a final standard; it is to ensure that every important action remains attributable, authorized in context, constrained in scope, and recoverable when something goes wrong.
