To evaluate an AI stock, first identify what the company sells in the AI supply chain, then test whether its reported growth is profitable, adequately funded, and supported by durable demand. Finally, ask what future performance its valuation already assumes and whether your other investments depend on the same customers or spending cycle. “AI exposure” is a starting point for analysis, not evidence that a stock is attractive.

How do I evaluate AI stocks?

Start with the business, not the label. AI companies span different parts of a connected economy: chip designers, cloud providers, infrastructure suppliers, and businesses adding AI features to existing products. Their revenue models, investment needs, and risks can differ substantially. Kiplinger’s October 1, 2026 commentary on the AI supply chain describes how spending by large cloud providers can flow through to suppliers and infrastructure companies.

  1. Locate the company in the AI economy. Identify the AI-related product or service, who pays for it, and the segment in which the company reports it.
  2. Check what the company actually discloses. Look for separately reported AI revenue, customer concentration, growth drivers, and relevant costs. If AI revenue is not separately quantified in the cited material, do not estimate it from broad segment growth or AI-related language.
  3. Test growth quality. Review revenue alongside margins, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, and free cash flow. Ask whether the added sales are generating economic returns or requiring steadily greater investment.
  4. Assess the price against plausible outcomes. Use valuation measures that fit the business, and consider what happens if growth, margins, or competitive strength fall short of expectations.
  5. Map the risks and your portfolio exposure. Consider dependencies on customers, suppliers, cloud partners, power, and the same infrastructure spending cycle.

Use the same periods and accounting definitions when comparing companies. A chip supplier and a cloud provider may both benefit from AI investment, but that does not make their financial results directly comparable.

How do you tell whether AI revenue growth is real?

“Real” growth means growth supported by reported sales, not just an AI announcement or forecast. Read revenue trends across multiple periods and segments, then determine what management says is driving them. Where disclosed, distinguish organic growth from growth due to acquisitions. Check whether the explanation is consistent with the company’s filings and whether a small number of customers or products account for much of the increase.

Revenue alone is not enough. Rising sales can coexist with worsening margins, heavy capital requirements, or weak cash generation. Compare the trend in revenue with gross and operating margins, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, and free cash flow. For infrastructure-heavy businesses, ask whether incremental revenue is outpacing the added costs and investment needed to deliver it.

Read monetization and cost disclosures together

Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K says that products including AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and enterprise AI solutions may monetize differently from its historical consumer and enterprise products, affecting revenue growth rates and margin trends. It also says Alphabet prioritizes user experience before monetization when developing new offerings. This is a company-specific example: AI features do not necessarily produce revenue in the same way or on the same timetable as an established product.

The same filing says AI requires more compute power than Alphabet’s historical offerings and describes expected increases in infrastructure operating costs, including depreciation, energy, equipment, and network capacity. When reviewing another company, look for its own disclosures rather than assuming Alphabet’s cost profile applies across the industry.

Separate demand from delivered, recognized sales

NVIDIA’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026 says growth in fiscal 2027’s second quarter and first half was driven by data-center products for accelerated computing and AI solutions. The filing also discusses supply constraints and the risk that demand estimates may be inaccurate. A buyer’s interest is not the same as a supplier’s ability to deliver, a customer’s ability to deploy capacity, or revenue recognized in a particular reporting period.

The same filing reported gross margin of 75.0% for fiscal 2027 Q2, compared with 72.4% for fiscal 2026 Q2, attributing the increase in part to product mix. Those figures describe NVIDIA in those specific periods; they are not an industry benchmark or a forecast for later quarters.

Which financial measures help compare AI companies?

Use several measures rather than relying on a single headline ratio. Each has limitations, and comparisons are most useful when business models, reporting periods, and accounting treatment are reasonably similar.

Measure What it compares What to watch
Price-to-earnings (P/E) Share price, or market capitalization, relative to earnings per share, or total net income. Specify whether earnings are trailing or forecast and whether they are reported or adjusted. Low or negative earnings can make the ratio misleading or unusable.
Price-to-sales (P/S) Market capitalization relative to revenue for a stated period. It does not show whether sales are profitable. Compare companies with similar margins and growth prospects where possible.
Enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) Enterprise value, which reflects equity value and net debt, relative to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. EBITDA excludes depreciation and amortization, which can be substantial for companies investing in data centers, equipment, or other infrastructure. Review capital spending and cash flow as well.
Free-cash-flow yield Free cash flow for a stated period divided by market capitalization. Define free cash flow consistently, commonly operating cash flow less capital expenditure. A single period may not reflect recurring cash generation or future investment needs.

For every ratio, record the price date, reporting period, and whether the earnings or cash-flow figure is trailing, forward-looking, reported, or adjusted. Do not compare one company’s forecast earnings with another’s past reported earnings without making that difference explicit.

Are AI stocks overvalued?

There is no single answer for the entire category. A valuation is a price relative to uncertain future business results, so the useful question is what growth, margins, and competitive durability the price appears to require—and how much the outcome could change if those assumptions miss.

The Bank for International Settlements’ 2026 Annual Economic Report describes elevated valuations for firms at the core of AI development and implied long-term earnings growth for large corporations above historical benchmarks. It also notes that sustaining high growth can become harder as companies mature and take a larger share of the market. This is a warning about expectations, not proof that every AI-related stock is overvalued.

Use scenarios, not a label

  • Build a base case: Set out a plausible path for revenue growth, margins, reinvestment, and cash generation.
  • Test an optimistic case: Ask what would need to go right for adoption, pricing, and competitive position to exceed the base case.
  • Test a downside case: Consider slower customer spending, delayed deployment, lower margins, higher infrastructure costs, or stronger competition.
  • Compare the implications: Ask whether the current price leaves room for weaker-than-expected results, rather than treating high growth alone as justification for a high multiple.

A claim that a named stock is cheap or expensive needs a dated share price, a specified earnings or cash-flow period, and a clear comparison basis. The available evidence here does not establish a consistent set of current market multiples across named companies, so it cannot support current stock rankings or buy/sell calls.

What risks should I check before investing in AI companies?

Read each company’s own filings for risks that could interrupt growth or weaken returns. Relevant areas include competition, customer concentration, supply constraints, infrastructure availability, energy and power, capital needs, regulation, intellectual property, and execution. A broad AI theme does not make these exposures interchangeable.

Customer and deployment concentration

NVIDIA’s 2026 Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26 reports that one direct customer represented 16% of total revenue in fiscal 2027 Q2. For the first half of fiscal 2027, three direct customers represented 16%, 15%, and 13%, respectively. NVIDIA also says it generates significant revenue from a limited number of indirect customers and that some companies may individually account for at least 10% of revenue. These are NVIDIA-specific disclosures for the stated periods, not industry-wide figures.

The filing also discusses constraints that can affect deployment, including customer access to infrastructure and capital. When a company depends on a limited set of buyers, examine whether those buyers can finance and build the capacity needed to use what they purchase.

Partnership terms and counterparties

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s January 2025 summary of its study of partnerships between large cloud providers and AI developers describes arrangements involving equity or revenue-sharing rights, consultation, control or exclusivity terms, and commitments for developers to spend a substantial portion of a partner’s investment on that provider’s cloud services. The FTC identifies possible effects on access to computing resources and talent, switching costs, and sensitive information. Those findings concern the arrangements studied; they should not be applied automatically to every AI partnership.

For a specific company, check who supplies its essential compute, where it can run its services, whether it has meaningful alternatives, and whether partnership obligations shape where its revenue or spending goes.

Financial and infrastructure spillovers

The BIS 2026 report warns that a reversal in AI investment could have broader financial consequences amid rising leverage and AI firms’ growing footprint in credit markets. It also points to supplier exposure that can include comparatively weakly capitalized engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, and discusses the possibility of asset-price pullbacks if risk-taking reverses or inflation-related rate tightening changes.

For infrastructure-dependent businesses, examine the practical constraints the company discloses: access to land, power, data-center capacity, equipment, supply, and capital. A strong demand narrative does not remove a bottleneck in building or financing the capacity to meet it.

How should I check whether my portfolio is diversified?

Count economic exposures, not just tickers. Several holdings may rely on the same cloud providers, large technology buyers, chip demand, or data-center investment. Kiplinger’s October 1, 2026 commentary argues that hyperscaler capital spending links chip designers with other suppliers and infrastructure companies, so a spending slowdown can affect multiple parts of the chain.

Also check whether a market-cap-weighted fund has become more concentrated in companies whose share prices have risen. Kiplinger’s related commentary makes this a useful prompt, but actual exposure depends on the fund’s current holdings and weights. Review current fund documents before quantifying concentration; a fund name or ticker count is not enough to establish diversification.

A practical checklist for comparing two companies

  • Business position: What AI-related product or service is sold, to whom, and in which reported segment?
  • Growth quality: What drives revenue, how concentrated are customers and products, and is growth converting into margins and cash?
  • Reinvestment: What capital expenditure, infrastructure, research and development, or working capital is required to sustain growth?
  • Competition: What alternatives do customers have, and what evidence supports adoption, retention, or pricing power?
  • Valuation: What future growth and margins appear necessary to support the dated price, using comparable measures and periods?
  • Risk: How sensitive is the business to weaker customer spending, delayed deployment, supply constraints, regulation, or execution?
  • Portfolio fit: Do existing holdings depend on the same buyers, suppliers, cloud partners, or infrastructure spending?
