To judge whether a video game company is financially healthy, look beyond a rising revenue or bookings figure. Review several years of filings and test growth against profitability, operating cash flow, debt, development needs, portfolio concentration, player engagement, and accounting choices. The right questions differ for a mobile free-to-play operator, a premium-game publisher, and a company with several business lines.
Start with the business model and reporting period
First identify how the company earns money: premium console and PC sales, free-to-play games, subscriptions, platform operations, licensing, or a mix. Separate segments when the company reports them. Note its fiscal year-end, reporting currency, and any acquisitions or divestitures that changed the business. A mobile operator’s recurring in-game spending and a premium publisher’s launch-driven sales have different timing and economics.
For a U.S. public company, begin with its latest Form 10-K and subsequent 10-Q filings. Use earnings releases for recent results and outlook, then verify important figures in the filed statements and notes. Private companies may not publish comparable detail, and reporting practices outside the U.S. can differ.
Check whether reported growth is durable
Where available, compare at least three fiscal years, then add quarterly or trailing-twelve-month context. Track GAAP revenue by segment, platform, geography, and content type where disclosed. Determine whether growth came from an established back catalog, recurring player spending, a new release, an acquisition, licensing, pricing, or an unusually strong quarter. Release timing and deferred revenue can make adjacent periods look quite different.

Revenue and bookings are related, not interchangeable
Bookings is an issuer-defined operating measure, not a universal substitute for GAAP revenue. Take-Two defines net bookings to include net products and services sold digitally or physically during a period, including licensing fees, merchandise, in-game advertising, and publisher incentives. Its FY2026 Form 10-K reported net bookings of $6,721.0 million for fiscal 2026, up 19.0% from $5,648.0 million in fiscal 2025; it reported GAAP net revenue separately. See the Take-Two FY2026 Form 10-K for the company’s definitions and reconciliation.
In its release for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Take-Two reported $6.72 billion in net bookings, up 19%, and $6.66 billion in GAAP net revenue, up 18%. The company said recurrent consumer spending represented 78% of both bookings and GAAP revenue that year. These are company-specific figures, not thresholds for a healthy publisher. Consult the Take-Two FY2026 results release and the issuer’s definition before comparing bookings with another company’s measure.
Test profitability and cash conversion
Follow gross profit and margin, operating income or loss, net income or loss, and operating cash flow. Compare each with revenue growth and investigate major gaps. Read the notes for capitalized software development, amortization, stock-based compensation, restructuring, acquisition costs, and impairment charges. Ask whether operating cash flow can support development, marketing, debt service, and shareholder returns, rather than relying on adjusted EBITDA alone.

Take-Two’s FY2026 Form 10-K reported an operating loss of $104.2 million and a net loss of $298.2 million. The prior-year operating and net losses were $4,391.1 million and $4,478.9 million. The company attributed much of that comparison to $3,545.2 million in goodwill impairment charges in the prior year, with no corresponding expense in FY2026. The improvement therefore needs to be read alongside both operating changes and the impairment difference.
Non-GAAP measures can offer management’s view of underlying performance, but they do not replace GAAP results or cash flow. Playtika’s FY2025 Form 10-K reported $2,755.4 million in revenue, a $206.4 million net loss, and $753.2 million in adjusted EBITDA. The adjusted figure does not erase the net loss; review the issuer’s reconciliation to see what it excludes. Playtika FY2025 Form 10-K.
Assess liquidity, debt, and funding needs
Read the balance sheet and cash-flow statement together. Record cash and short-term investments, total debt, near-term maturities, interest expense, operating cash flow, and planned or committed development investment. Check whether cash is restricted, whether covenants limit management’s choices, and whether upcoming maturities depend on refinancing. If operations rely on new equity, consider the dilution to existing shareholders.

Take-Two reported $1,638.1 million in cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash at March 31, 2026, compared with $1,559.2 million a year earlier. Its filing says the increase reflected, in part, an equity offering and positive product cash flow, while debt repayment and investments offset some of the increase. The headline balance alone does not show how much cash is unrestricted or what obligations it must cover. Playtika’s filing lists significant indebtedness, refinancing difficulty, and debt covenants among its risks.
Measure portfolio durability and concentration
Identify the games, franchises, platforms, licensors, and player groups that drive sales or bookings. Compare the largest contributors with the rest of the portfolio. Risk rises when results depend heavily on one annual sports release, hit mobile title, platform, licensor, or small group of high-spending users. Look for evidence that older games keep contributing, new releases replace declines, and the company can launch products on schedule and within budget.
Recurring spending from virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases, and advertising can reduce reliance on a single launch date. It still depends on continuing player engagement and willingness to spend; recurring revenue is not guaranteed. Playtika identifies reliance on a limited number of games and a small percentage of users as risks, alongside the challenge of attracting and retaining players and successfully launching new products.

Use player metrics with caution
Companies may report daily or monthly active users (DAU or MAU), paying users, payer conversion, retention, or average revenue per daily active user (ARPDAU). For each metric, check the issuer’s precise definition, measurement period, treatment of multiple accounts and devices, and any methodology changes. These measures may not be independently verified and often are not standardized.
PLAYSTUDIOS’ FY2025 Form 10-K warns that its DAU, MAU, ARPDAU, daily paying user, and payer conversion measures may differ from other companies’ calculations. It also discusses data limitations involving multiple accounts, platform changes, latency, bots, and third-party data. As a result, raw user counts or ARPDAU values should not be treated as directly comparable across publishers without reconciling definitions. See the PLAYSTUDIOS FY2025 Form 10-K.

Focus on risks that could materially change results: delays or cancellations, development overruns, player acquisition costs, platform policy changes, intellectual-property rights, licensing, cybersecurity, regulation, foreign exchange, acquisitions, and dependence on key people. Risk disclosures are not forecasts; they identify dependencies the company says could matter.
Best Value
Accounting judgments can also change how performance appears. Take-Two lists revenue recognition, capitalization and recognition of software development costs and licenses, goodwill and intangible-asset valuation, stock-based compensation, and taxes among its critical accounting policies. For a company acquiring studios or franchises, examine how acquired intangibles and goodwill are valued and whether impairment charges point to changed expectations.
Compare companies on like-for-like measures
When comparing publishers, use the same fiscal periods and accounting basis while keeping their business models visible. Do not compare margins without considering segment mix and accounting treatment, or bookings without checking each issuer’s definition.
