Short answer: Treat the earnings headline as an index, not as evidence. Record the period, revenue, GAAP net income, diluted EPS, any adjusted measure and guidance, then verify each item in the company’s filed statements, notes, management discussion, cash-flow statement and non-GAAP reconciliation.
This process tells you whether reported growth is profitable, whether adjusted earnings resemble cash generation, whether the balance sheet can support the business and whether management’s explanation fits the numbers. It is a method for analyzing public-company reports, not a forecast of a share price.
1. Capture exactly what the headline claims
Before opening a filing, write down the headline’s claims rather than relying on memory. Record:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the fiscal period and the comparison base: year over year, sequential quarter or versus guidance;
- reported revenue;
- GAAP net income and diluted earnings per share;
- the adjusted profit, EBITDA or other non-GAAP number being emphasized;
- management’s newest guidance and the previous range, if both are provided.
Also note whether the headline describes total-company results, a segment, continuing operations or a pro forma basis. A selected metric can look strong while another statement line deteriorates. The release contains the definitions and corresponding statements needed to test the claim; the headline does not.

2. Move from the release to the filed record
An earnings release or a Form 8-K earnings disclosure is a starting point. For a U.S. issuer, move to the Form 10-Q for quarterly reporting or the Form 10-K for annual reporting. The SEC explains the 10-K’s contents and purpose in How to Read a 10-K and its investor bulletin at How to Read a 10-K. A Form 8-K can summarize results before the full periodic filing appears; the SEC’s guide is How to Read an 8-K.
The 10-K includes audited annual financial statements. The 10-Q supplies quarterly statements and related disclosures. Confirm the fiscal period, the number of weeks in a quarter when relevant, and whether the comparison uses continuing operations or another basis. The notes can change the meaning of a headline by explaining an acquisition, a discontinued operation, a tax item, a debt refinancing or a change in segment presentation.
These forms and filing conventions are U.S.-focused. A foreign private issuer may use different forms and accounting standards, so identify the issuer’s reporting regime before assuming that a 10-Q or U.S. GAAP reconciliation exists.
3. Read the statements as one system
Profit is only one view of a business. Read the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement and notes together. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Financial Statements describes how each statement contributes to the picture.
| Report | What it measures | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Income statement | Revenue, expenses and profit over the reported period | What drove revenue and margin changes? Did operating costs grow faster than sales? |
| Balance sheet | Assets, liabilities and equity at a specific date | What changed in cash, receivables, inventory, debt and equity? Are obligations coming due soon? |
| Statement of cash flows | Cash movements from operating, investing and financing activities | Does operations generate cash? How much was spent on property and equipment, acquisitions or debt repayment? |
| Notes to the statements | Accounting policies and detail behind reported amounts | Are there acquisitions, stock compensation, contingencies, tax effects, segment changes, debt terms or commitments that explain the headline? |
Check whether revenue growth came from an acquisition, currency movement, price changes, volume or an accounting presentation. Look at gross and operating margins, but tie every material movement to the notes or MD&A rather than inventing a cause. A company can report rising net income while cash falls because receivables or inventory absorb cash, or because it makes a large investment.

4. Use MD&A to test management’s explanation
Find the section titled “Management’s Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations.” The SEC says its purpose is to give investors the context management considers necessary to understand financial condition, changes in financial condition and results of operations. The agency’s exact wording is: The purpose of MD&A is to provide investors with information that the company’s management believes to be necessary to an understanding of its financial condition, changes in financial condition and results of operations.
See the SEC guide at Beginners’ Guide to Financial Statements.
Read MD&A against the statements, not instead of them. Look for:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- specific drivers of revenue, volume, price, mix and margins;
- explanations for changes in each major expense category;
- working-capital movements and the reasons operating cash flow changed;
- trends, events and uncertainties that could materially affect future earnings or cash flow;
- liquidity sources, expected uses of cash, debt maturities and covenant considerations.
A useful explanation identifies the reported period and quantifies the important drivers. Generic language about “macro conditions” is less informative than a discussion tied to the company’s actual customers, products, regions or costs. If management attributes a margin improvement to efficiency, check whether the income statement, headcount disclosures, restructuring charges and cash spending support that account.
5. Reconstruct adjusted earnings from GAAP
Non-GAAP measures are supplemental and management-defined. “Adjusted EPS,” “adjusted net income” and “EBITDA” are not standardized labels. Two companies can use the same label while excluding different items, so start with the closest GAAP measure and follow the reconciliation line by line.
- Locate the reconciliation. Find the table that starts with GAAP net income, operating income or EPS and ends with the adjusted measure.
- List every adjustment. Record only the items the company actually reports, such as restructuring, acquisition costs, stock compensation, impairment, litigation or foreign-currency effects.
- Check cash and recurrence. Determine whether each exclusion required cash and whether a similar charge appeared in earlier periods.
- Compare definitions over time. Note additions, removals or renamed adjustments between quarters and years.
- Read management’s rationale. Filings generally explain why management believes the measure is useful and, when material, how it uses it.
The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s Non-GAAP Financial Measures Compliance and Disclosure Interpretations requires a clear explanation and reconciliation. Question 102.07 states: Accordingly, a clear description of how this measure is calculated, as well as the necessary reconciliation, should accompany the measure where it is used.
The same interpretation warns: Also, companies should avoid inappropriate or potentially misleading inferences about its usefulness.

A “one-time” label is not proof that a cost will never recur. Repeated restructuring, acquisition or litigation adjustments may indicate that the cost is part of how the company operates, even if each individual event is unusual. That does not automatically make the adjustment improper; assess its frequency, cash impact, size and disclosed purpose.
Do not assume EBITDA equals cash profit. It excludes interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, while the company may also remove stock compensation, restructuring or other items. The SEC’s guidance at Financial Reporting Manual, Topic 8 explains the disclosure framework and the need to avoid misleading presentations.
6. Check whether earnings convert into cash
Compare net income with operating cash flow across several quarters or years, not just one reporting date. A temporary gap can result from working-capital timing or another item disclosed in the cash-flow statement. Persistent divergence deserves an explanation in the statements and notes.
Then examine the cash uses that a headline may omit:
- capital expenditures and other investment spending;
- debt maturities, required principal payments and interest;
- cash taxes and lease payments when material;
- acquisitions, dividends, buybacks and other financing commitments;
- available cash, revolver capacity and near-term liquidity needs.
“Free cash flow” is a company-defined measure, not a uniform accounting subtotal. The SEC specifically says a company should describe how it calculates free cash flow, provide a reconciliation and avoid implying that the result is all discretionary cash after debt service or other mandatory uses. Recalculate it from reported statements when possible, and label your calculation—for example, operating cash flow minus capital expenditures—rather than silently substituting it for the company’s definition.

Ratios can organize the review. Operating margin shows profit from operations relative to revenue; the current ratio compares current assets with current liabilities; debt-to-equity describes capital structure; and inventory turnover relates cost of sales to inventory. The SEC notes that useful or desirable ratios vary by industry, so interpret each against the company’s business model, seasonality and peers rather than applying a universal pass/fail threshold.
7. Test guidance against prior guidance and its assumptions
Place the new outlook beside the previous range and the actual result for the period just reported. Record the assumptions management provides, such as fuel prices, tax rate, credit losses or diluted share count. A higher range is not automatically better if the assumptions are more aggressive or if the company narrowed the range by removing downside cases.
For example, WEX Inc.’s Q2 2026 earnings release, filed with the SEC in July 2026, gave full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $2.86–$2.90 billion and adjusted net income guidance of $689–$703 million. Its prior ranges were $2.82–$2.88 billion for revenue and $667–$688 million for adjusted net income. WEX identified assumptions including fuel prices, tax rate, credit losses and diluted shares, and explained the items excluded from adjusted guidance. These are company-specific forecasts, not realized results or a benchmark. The filing is available at WEX Reports Second Quarter 2026 Financial Results.
Forward-looking non-GAAP guidance may not include a complete GAAP reconciliation when the company cannot forecast particular information without unreasonable effort. SEC rules require the company to identify the unavailable information and explain why it is not reasonably available and could be significant. Treat the forecast as a set of assumptions and a range of outcomes, never as a reported fact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Review reporting-quality signals
Before drawing a conclusion, read the auditor’s opinion and disclosures about internal control over financial reporting. Look for material weaknesses, a qualified opinion or a disclaimer, then read the explanation rather than treating the label alone as a verdict. A weakness is a reason to investigate how information is produced and corrected.

Also review the CEO and CFO certifications, any disclosed disagreement with an auditor and any auditor change. These items do not by themselves establish that earnings are wrong, but they affect how much confidence to place in an unaudited release and where to focus follow-up questions.
9. Keep comparisons like-for-like
Use the following axes when comparing periods or companies:
| Axis | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Growth quality | Reported revenue and earnings growth, margin direction, and organic versus acquisition-driven growth where disclosed | Acquired revenue can raise the total while the legacy business contracts. |
| GAAP-to-adjusted bridge | Excluded items, recurrence, cash impact and definition changes | An adjusted increase is more informative when the bridge is stable and understandable. |
| Cash conversion | Operating cash flow relative to net income, working-capital effects and capital spending | Profit that does not convert to cash needs a documented explanation. |
| Balance-sheet capacity | Cash, debt, maturities, interest burden, liquidity and commitments | Growth can create financial strain when it requires borrowing or consumes liquidity. |
| Expectations | Actual results versus prior guidance, the new range and its assumptions | A result can beat a headline estimate yet reduce the company’s own outlook. |
| Comparability | Fiscal calendar, seasonality, business mix, currency, acquisitions and consistent definitions | A percentage change is misleading when the periods or populations are not equivalent. |
When using peers, identify the company, fiscal period, geography and accounting basis. A retailer, software company and bank may all report “operating margin,” but their economics and useful ratios differ. The SEC’s investor guidance specifically cautions that ratio usefulness varies by industry.
10. A repeatable reading sequence
- Write the claim. Capture the period, comparison basis, GAAP figures, adjusted figure and guidance presented in the release.
- Open the filing. Use the corresponding 10-Q or 10-K, and check whether an 8-K is only a preliminary summary.
- Verify the statements. Read income, balance sheet and cash flow together, then use the notes to explain material movements.
- Challenge MD&A. Match management’s stated drivers and risks to the reported changes in revenue, expenses, working capital and liquidity.
- Rebuild the adjustment bridge. Trace every non-GAAP exclusion to its GAAP starting point and compare it with prior periods.
- Follow the cash. Compare net income with operating cash flow, subtract clearly identified investment spending if you calculate free cash flow, and inspect debt and commitments.
- Stress the outlook. Compare old and new guidance, list the assumptions and separate forecasts from achieved results.
- Check report quality. Read the audit opinion, control disclosures, certifications and any auditor disagreement or change.
- Make only like-for-like comparisons. Adjust your interpretation for seasonality, fiscal calendars, acquisitions, currency, mix and differing definitions.
What this method can and cannot tell you
This approach can reveal whether a headline is supported by filed numbers, whether adjusted earnings omit recurring or cash costs, whether profits are converting into operating cash and whether liquidity can absorb stated obligations. It cannot produce a universal “best” metric or guarantee a market return. Accounting policies, segment economics, seasonality and peer definitions differ, and a forecast remains uncertain even when its assumptions are clearly disclosed.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore specific: state the issuer, fiscal period, comparison basis, GAAP result, adjustment bridge, cash conversion, balance-sheet position and guidance assumptions you actually reviewed. Avoid turning one favorable quarter or one unfavorable adjustment into a claim about the entire company.
