To evaluate an AI revenue or growth claim, treat the phrase “AI revenue” as a label that still needs a definition. Record the speaker’s exact words, the period and geography, and whether the number is recognized revenue, a booking, annual recurring revenue, a run rate, a pipeline value, an adoption metric, cost savings, or a forecast. Then trace it to the company’s filings, test the calculation and period, and look for a credible chain from an AI product or use to customer payment, reported revenue, margins, and cash flow.
A large percentage or an impressive customer-count announcement is not proof that AI is driving financial results. The evidence is stronger when the company explains what “AI” does in its business, identifies who pays, defines the metric consistently, reconciles supplemental measures to GAAP when required, and discusses the costs, constraints, and risks behind the growth.
Start with the number, not the AI label
The first question is not “How much AI revenue does the company have?” It is “What exactly is being measured?” Public companies use “AI” to describe products, features, internal tools, customer usage, strategic plans, and forecasts. Those descriptions can be commercially important without being a separately reported revenue line.
Use this sequence for every claim:
- Capture the claim exactly. Save the speaker, date, quotation, period, geography, segment, unit, and denominator.
- Classify the measure. Decide whether it is GAAP revenue, a non-GAAP measure, an operating KPI, bookings, annual recurring revenue, a run rate, pipeline, adoption, usage, savings, or a forecast.
- Define the AI connection. Identify the product or operation, the paying customer, and whether the use is current or only proposed.
- Verify the source. Compare the earnings release and call with the Form 10-Q, Form 10-K, segment disclosures, and MD&A.
- Test the economics. Follow the claim from customer purchase to recognized revenue, profitability, cash generation, and the investment required to support it.
If a claim cannot survive those checks, describe it as an unverified operating or promotional assertion rather than as realized AI revenue.

What does a company mean by “AI revenue”?
There is no universal SEC-defined line item called “AI revenue.” A company may attribute revenue to an AI product, combine AI features with a broader offering, or disclose only a company-defined KPI. The accounting treatment depends on the underlying transaction and the company’s reporting, not on the marketing label.
| Claim type | What it measures | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| GAAP revenue | Revenue recognized under the company’s applicable accounting rules for goods or services delivered during the reporting period. | Check the income statement, revenue footnote, segment information, and the company’s explanation of how any AI attribution is determined. |
| Non-GAAP financial measure | An adjusted financial measure that changes or excludes amounts from the comparable GAAP measure. | When Regulation G applies, look for a quantitative reconciliation to the most directly comparable GAAP measure and assess whether the presentation could mislead. See the SEC guidance on non-GAAP financial measures. |
| Company-defined operating KPI | A metric management uses to describe operations, customers, usage, or performance; it may not be a financial measure. | Find the definition, calculation, period, scope, reason it is useful, controls, and any change from prior periods. An operating KPI is not automatically a non-GAAP financial measure. The SEC’s KPI guidance explains the disclosure questions to ask. |
| Bookings or contracted value | Orders, contracts, or commitments that may produce revenue in future periods. | Check when and under what conditions the amount becomes recognized revenue. Do not relabel bookings as current-period revenue. |
| Annual recurring revenue (ARR) | An annualized view of recurring contracts or subscriptions, usually measured at a point in time. | Read the company’s definition, inclusion rules, cancellations policy, currency treatment, and reconciliation to reported revenue. ARR is not the same as revenue recognized in the period. |
| Run rate | A current-period result or exit-rate amount extrapolated over a longer period. | Identify the base period and assumptions. A run rate is an extrapolation, not a record of revenue already earned. |
| Pipeline | Potential opportunities at different stages of a sales process. | Ask about qualification, conversion rates, timing, cancellations, and the portion that has become contracted. Pipeline is not revenue. |
| Adoption or usage | Customers using a feature, seats enabled, queries processed, or another activity measure. | Determine whether users pay extra, how usage converts to contracts, and whether the activity appears in revenue or only indicates interest. |
| Cost savings | Estimated or realized reductions in operating costs from an AI deployment. | Separate an estimate from booked expense reductions and check the cash-flow and margin effects. Savings do not automatically increase revenue. |
| Forecast or outlook | Management’s expectation about future sales, growth, margins, or AI contribution. | Record the time horizon, assumptions, dependencies, and evidence supporting the forecast. Keep it separate from historical performance. |
How to check an AI revenue or growth claim step by step
1. Pin down the exact claim
Write the statement verbatim before interpreting it. Record:
- Who made it and where: filing, earnings release, investor presentation, earnings call, interview, or social-media promotion.
- The date and fiscal period, including whether the period is a quarter, year, trailing period, or point-in-time measurement.
- Geography, currency, segment, product, and customer group.
- The unit and denominator: dollars, percentage, customers, seats, transactions, bookings, or another unit.
- Whether it describes historical results, a current run rate, a forecast, or a target.
Do not silently convert “AI-related bookings,” “customers using an AI feature,” or “AI pipeline” into revenue. Keep the company’s own wording attached to the number until the filing establishes a different basis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Ask what “AI” means in this business
Identify the actual product or operational use. Is the company selling a model, an AI-enabled application, additional computing capacity, a professional service, or an existing product with an AI feature? Who pays: a new customer, an existing customer buying an add-on, a usage-based account, or the company itself through internal cost reduction?
SEC Corporation Finance staff said material AI disclosures should define the technology, explain how it could affect results, focus on actual or proposed use rather than generic buzz, and have a reasonable basis for claims about AI prospects. The June 24, 2024 statement is staff review guidance, not a standalone AI-revenue accounting rule. Read the considerations in “The State of Disclosure Review.”
A useful description names the business process, the customer value, the commercial offering, and the expected financial effect. “We are investing in AI” does not establish that customers are paying for AI or that AI caused a reported increase.

3. Trace the statement to primary company documents
For a U.S. public company, start with its filings in SEC EDGAR. Locate the latest earnings release, Form 10-Q or Form 10-K, segment note, and MD&A, then compare them with the earnings-call transcript or presentation. Investor.gov recommends using EDGAR and reviewing formal disclosures as well as promotional campaigns when assessing AI claims; its guidance is available in the Investor Alert on artificial-intelligence fraud.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Search the filing for the company’s exact metric name and for related terms such as “artificial intelligence,” “machine learning,” “generative,” “bookings,” “remaining performance obligations,” “recurring,” “usage,” and “run rate.” Check whether the number appears in a financial statement, a footnote, MD&A, a non-GAAP reconciliation, or only in promotional material.
When a call contains a number that does not appear in the filing, ask why. The omission may reflect a voluntary operating metric, a different period, or a claim that has not been incorporated into the company’s formal reporting. It is a reason to investigate, not by itself proof that the claim is false.
4. Interrogate the metric’s definition and controls
For every AI-specific KPI, obtain five pieces of information:
- Definition: What is included and excluded?
- Calculation: What formula, data source, and counting rules produce the figure?
- Period and scope: Is it a point-in-time balance, a period total, an average, a segment measure, or a consolidated measure?
- Usefulness: Why does management use it, and why should investors consider it informative?
- Consistency and controls: Has the basis changed, and what controls support the data?
Read the company’s explanation of changes from prior periods. A higher figure may result from a new product category, a broader customer definition, an acquisition, a currency change, or a revised counting method rather than underlying growth. The SEC’s Commission guidance on MD&A metrics emphasizes these disclosures and the importance of controls for material metrics derived from company information.
5. Separate GAAP revenue from supplemental measures
Put the claim beside the comparable GAAP result. If management presents an adjusted financial measure, check the reconciliation and the explanation of why the adjustment is useful. Regulation G requires a quantitative reconciliation when it applies to a non-GAAP financial measure, and SEC guidance cautions against a materially misleading presentation. Do not assume that every company-defined KPI is a non-GAAP measure; classification depends on what the metric represents and how it is calculated.

For cash or liquidity claims, go beyond an adjusted earnings figure. Inspect the statement of cash flows, capital expenditures, working-capital movements, and any financing needed to build AI capacity. A company can report rapid top-line growth while consuming substantial cash to buy hardware, lease data-center capacity, hire specialists, or subsidize customer adoption.
6. Build the economic bridge
Test the complete chain rather than stopping at an AI announcement:
- Capability: What AI feature, service, or internal deployment exists?
- Customer value: What problem does it solve, and who is willing to pay?
- Commercial mechanism: Is the charge a subscription, usage fee, license, services contract, or higher price for an existing product?
- Recognition: When does the contract satisfy the company’s revenue-recognition requirements?
- Reported result: Where is the effect visible in product, segment, or consolidated revenue?
- Profitability: What happens to gross margin, operating margin, and customer-support costs?
- Cash generation: Does operating cash flow improve after required investment and working-capital needs?
Look for evidence of monetization, not only access or interest. A rising number of enabled users matters financially only if the company explains conversion to paid contracts, pricing, retention, or usage that produces revenue.

Align fiscal periods, units, segments, currencies, and definitions before calculating growth. Record acquisitions, divestitures, product-scope changes, one-time contracts, and measurement changes. Always capture the absolute amount and its denominator when available: a large percentage can come from a small starting base.
Read the AI claim alongside consolidated revenue, the relevant segment, margins, operating cash flow, capital requirements, and customer concentration. The SEC’s Financial Reporting Manual, Topic 9, describes MD&A as providing context about the quality and variability of earnings and cash flow. That context is essential when a narrow AI metric grows faster than the company as a whole.
8. Evaluate forecasts separately from results
A projection is not achieved revenue. For an AI outlook, record the time horizon and the assumptions about product delivery, model performance, customer budgets, pricing, capacity, regulation, and competition. Identify dependencies such as third-party infrastructure, data rights, hiring, or a customer rollout schedule.

Ask what evidence management provides for the forecast and what would cause it to miss. SEC staff’s AI disclosure statement calls for a reasonable basis for claims about AI prospects. Treat that as a standard for substantiation, not as confirmation that the forecast will be met.

Review risk factors and MD&A for facts that could weaken the growth story:
- Capacity limits, delivery delays, or dependence on scarce infrastructure.
- Customer concentration, pilot projects that have not converted, or cancellation rights.
- Competition, price pressure, commoditization, and dependence on a small number of suppliers.
- Training, inference, data, energy, support, and compliance costs.
- Security, privacy, intellectual-property, employment, and sector-specific regulation.
- Changes in demand, backlog quality, or the timing of customer deployments.
Tailored discussion of actual business use and specific risks is more informative than generic statements that AI could affect the company. Compare positive claims with capacity disclosures, margin trends, cash needs, and any warning that management cannot yet quantify the effect.
10. Check the promotional context
Investor.gov warns that false claims about public-company AI products and services can appear in pump-and-dump schemes. Review filings and promotional campaigns together. Be especially cautious when promotion emphasizes attracting investors rather than explaining a functioning product, paying customers, recognized revenue, or verifiable operating results.
This framework identifies warning signs; it does not establish that a particular claim is fraudulent. Confirmation requires reliable evidence about the company and the statement.
How can I tell whether AI is actually driving a company’s revenue?
Use attribution evidence at three levels:
- Product level: The company identifies the AI-enabled offering, its price or usage model, and the customers buying it.
- Financial level: The relevant product or segment shows reported revenue growth that is measured on a consistent basis, with an explanation of how AI is attributed.
- Economic level: Margins, operating cash flow, retention, or another financial outcome reflects the business after the costs of delivering the AI service.
If only the first level is documented, you can say the company has an AI product or customer activity. If the second is documented but costs and cash are unclear, you can describe reported revenue growth without concluding that AI is profitable. A strong conclusion requires all three levels or a clear qualification about what remains unknown.

How to compare two companies’ AI growth claims
Compare only figures with sufficiently similar definitions and periods. Use a side-by-side worksheet rather than ranking companies on a single percentage.
| Comparison axis | Questions to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Disclosed AI use | What is the current or proposed use, and which products or operations are involved? | “AI” may describe a mature revenue product at one company and an experiment at another. |
| Revenue basis | Is AI-attributed revenue separately defined, combined with another product, or absent from the financial statements? | Different attribution rules make headline amounts non-comparable. |
| Scale and growth | What is the absolute amount, period, currency, segment, and comparison base? | Growth rates without a base can exaggerate the apparent difference. |
| Consolidated and segment trends | How does the relevant segment compare with total-company revenue? | A fast-growing small activity may have little effect on the consolidated business. |
| Profitability and cash | What are the margins, operating cash flow, capital needs, and delivery costs? | Revenue growth can require heavy investment or produce weak economics. |
| Customer evidence | Are customers paying, renewing, concentrated, or still in pilots? | Usage and interest do not establish durable monetization. |
| Risks and assumptions | What constraints, dependencies, and forecast assumptions does each company disclose? | Risk-adjusted growth is more informative than an unsupported target. |
When definitions or periods differ, state plainly that the figures are not directly comparable. Do not force a winner from mismatched metrics.
Common mistakes and the correction for each
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Calling an AI customer count “AI revenue” | Customers may be testing, using a free tier, or buying a broader product without an AI surcharge. | Find the paid contract, pricing mechanism, and recognized revenue. |
| Calling pipeline or bookings current sales | Opportunities can be delayed, reduced, canceled, or never contracted. | Track conversion and the period in which revenue is recognized. |
| Comparing percentages without bases | A high rate from a small base may represent less money than a lower rate from a large base. | Report the absolute amount, denominator, and period. |
| Assuming every KPI is non-GAAP | Operating metrics and non-GAAP financial measures have different disclosure requirements. | Determine what the metric represents, then check for any required reconciliation. |
| Ignoring changes in definitions | A broader scope or revised counting rule can create artificial growth. | Read the methodology and prior-period comparability explanation. |
| Using a forecast as evidence of results | Targets depend on assumptions and have not yet occurred. | Separate historical figures, current run rates, and forward-looking expectations. |
| Reading only promotional material | Marketing may omit costs, limitations, and unfavorable trends. | Read filings, MD&A, risk factors, and cash-flow information. |
| Concluding fraud from a warning sign | Promotional emphasis or an unexplained metric warrants scrutiny but is not proof. | Seek corroborating disclosures and reliable evidence before making that claim. |

Scope and limits of this method
The cited SEC materials and filing conventions are U.S.-focused. A company listed or reporting in another jurisdiction may use different disclosure rules, accounting standards, terminology, and regulator guidance. Apply the same discipline—define the metric, trace it to primary documents, reconcile it to financial statements, and test the economics—while checking the rules that govern that issuer.
SEC materials do not establish a universal comparable public metric called “AI revenue.” Some companies will not separately quantify revenue attributable to AI, and general AI investment or product announcements do not justify inferring an amount. This method evaluates the quality and meaning of a claim; it does not validate an issuer’s books or determine whether a particular investment is suitable.
Bottom line
AI is driving reported growth only when the company can connect a clearly defined, consistently measured AI activity to paying customers, recognized revenue, and credible profit or cash-flow effects. Verify every link in that chain, keep bookings, adoption, run rates, and forecasts in their proper categories, and refuse to rank companies whose definitions and periods are not comparable.
