To claim deductions in TurboTax, answer its deduction questions, enter the amounts supported by your records, and review whether your eligible itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction for your filing status and tax year. TurboTax says it prepares Schedule A when you itemize. For a 2025 federal return, some eligible deductions reported on Schedule 1-A may be available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
Start with the tax year and filing status
Deduction amounts and rules depend on the tax year. The figures below are the basic federal standard deduction amounts for tax year 2025, for returns generally filed in 2026. Intuit TurboTax lists these amounts; age, blindness, dependent status, or a spouse’s itemization can affect the calculation.
| Filing status | 2025 basic standard deduction |
|---|---|
| Single | $15,750 |
| Married filing separately | $15,750 |
| Married filing jointly | $31,500 |
| Head of household | $23,625 |
| Surviving spouse | $31,500 |
These are tax-year 2025 figures, not amounts to carry forward to another return. See TurboTax’s standard deduction guide for the cited figures, and check the applicable IRS instructions for the year you are filing.

Enter deductions in TurboTax
- Gather records. Collect documents relevant to your situation, such as mortgage interest statements, property and state or local tax records, charitable contribution records, and medical expense records. Keep receipts and supporting documents; what qualifies and what evidence is required vary by deduction.
- Answer TurboTax’s deduction questions. Enter the information requested for applicable expenses. TurboTax describes a guided question flow and says it fills out Schedule A when you itemize. Screen labels can vary, and the available sources do not establish one set of click-by-click instructions for both TurboTax Online and Desktop.
- Review the deduction comparison. Compare your eligible itemized deduction total with the standard deduction for your filing status and tax year. The IRS says that in most cases, taking the larger amount results in less federal income tax.
- Check for deductions reported elsewhere. Some deductions do not belong on Schedule A. For a 2025 return, review Schedule 1-A if you may qualify for one of its deductions, and verify that no expense has been claimed twice.
- Check the return against your records. Confirm that each category and amount matches your documentation and the applicable IRS instructions before filing.
TurboTax’s overview of the workflow is available in its Schedule A guide. A guided interview helps enter information; it does not establish that an expense meets IRS eligibility rules.

Choose between the standard deduction and itemizing
Schedule A (Form 1040) is used to calculate itemized deductions. Add only eligible amounts after applying each category’s rules, then compare the total with the standard deduction that applies to your tax year and filing status. In most cases, the IRS advises taking whichever of those two amounts is larger for federal income tax purposes.
Do not decide based on one expense in isolation. For example, mortgage interest or a large medical bill does not automatically make itemizing more beneficial: the total eligible Schedule A amount is what matters. Also account for any deductions that are available separately from this choice.

What belongs on Schedule A
The 2025 IRS Schedule A instructions cover medical and dental expenses, certain state and local taxes, interest, charitable contributions, casualty and theft losses, and specified other deductions. Each category has its own limits and conditions. Do not include an item on Schedule A if it has already been deducted on another form or schedule, such as Schedule 1-A, C, E, or F.
Medical and dental expenses
For tax year 2025, eligible medical and dental expenses generally count as an itemized deduction only to the extent they exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI). This threshold applies to the eligible amount under the category rules; it does not mean every medical bill can be deducted. TurboTax summarizes the rule in its 2025 medical expense guide.

State and local taxes
Under the IRS’s 2025 Schedule A instructions, the overall limit for the state and local income, sales, and property tax deduction is $40,000, or $20,000 for married filing separately. For modified AGI above $500,000, or $250,000 for married filing separately, the limit is reduced, but not below $10,000 or $5,000, respectively. These are tax-year 2025 limits; consult the applicable line 5 instructions rather than applying them to another year.

For tax year 2025, the IRS created Schedule 1-A for deductions involving qualified tips, qualified overtime compensation, car loan interest, and the enhanced deduction for seniors. Eligible filers may claim these deductions whether they itemize or take the standard deduction, subject to each category’s own requirements. They are reported on Schedule 1-A, not Schedule A.
