To open Xbox Game Bar with your controller’s Xbox button in Windows 11, turn on the controller-button setting in Windows Settings. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar is the overlay the button opens. Windows 11 has no separately named “Xbox Controller Bar,” so the phrase in the title refers to Game Bar.
Turn on the Xbox button for Game Bar
Microsoft’s support instructions for Game Bar describe this route. The steps below follow them.
- Press Windows+I to open Settings.
- In the Settings search box, type Xbox Game Bar and select the matching result.
- Find the setting labeled in Microsoft’s screen-reader instructions as Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller, Xbox button, and turn it on. Microsoft’s guidance for this setting is at Use a screen reader to record your screen with Xbox Game Bar.
- With a controller connected, press the Xbox button. Game Bar should open over the current app.
If the toggle is hard to find
Menu wording can change between Windows 11 builds, so the exact location of the toggle may not match a path quoted from another guide. Microsoft’s instructions tell you to search Settings for Xbox and select the Xbox Game Bar setting, which is the most reliable route. Do not depend on a fixed submenu path unless you have confirmed it on your own build.
Open Game Bar without a controller
Game Bar also opens from the keyboard with Windows+G, as listed in Microsoft’s keyboard shortcuts in Windows reference. This shortcut does not depend on the controller setting, so it is useful as a fallback if your controller is not connected.

Xbox Game Bar and Xbox mode are different features
The title’s wording can point to two separate Microsoft features. Game Bar is an in-game overlay opened by the controller button or by Windows+G. Xbox mode is a full-screen, controller-friendly gaming experience. Turning on the Game Bar controller button does not turn on Xbox mode, and Xbox mode is not needed to use Game Bar.

Do not apply the Xbox mode version or market requirements to Game Bar. Microsoft’s cited material does not establish the minimum Windows build or Game Bar version for the controller-button setting, and it does not describe regional availability for that setting.

Limits of the official guidance
- The controller-button setting is documented, but the cited Microsoft pages do not list a minimum Windows 11 build for it.
- Microsoft’s wording for the setting is quoted from its screen-reader instructions. Labels in your version of Settings may differ slightly.
- Microsoft does not name specific controller models in the cited material. Any controller with an Xbox button can be used for this function, provided it connects to your PC.
If you do not have a controller, Windows+G opens Game Bar without any extra setup.
