There is no universal Enable Thunderbolt switch in Windows 11. Thunderbolt and USB4 support is negotiated between the computer’s hardware, UEFI/BIOS firmware, ACPI configuration, host-router firmware, Windows, and device drivers.

On a compatible PC, the practical process is to update the manufacturer’s firmware and drivers, enable any relevant firmware option, connect a compatible device, and verify that Windows detects the USB4 host router. Windows 11 exposes this information through USB4 Hubs and Devices, rather than through a setting named Thunderbolt.

Before you try to enable Thunderbolt

Check the computer manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model. A USB-C connector does not automatically support Thunderbolt or USB4. It may support only USB data and charging, or USB data plus DisplayPort output.

You need a compatible Thunderbolt or USB4 port, supported system firmware, and a compatible dock, monitor, storage device, or other peripheral. If the hardware does not include a Thunderbolt/USB4-capable controller, no Windows setting or registry change can add it.

What you see What it means
A USB-C port with a lightning-bolt symbol Often indicates Thunderbolt support, but verify it against the manufacturer’s specifications.
A USB-C port marked USB4 Indicates USB4 support, which may provide the relevant Windows USB4 management interface. It does not necessarily mean every Thunderbolt feature is supported.
A plain USB-C port Do not assume it supports Thunderbolt, USB4, PCIe tunneling, or display output.

Step 1: Install Windows, firmware, and OEM driver updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.
  3. Go to the computer manufacturer’s support page and enter the exact model or serial number.
  4. Install the latest available UEFI/BIOS, chipset, Thunderbolt or USB4, graphics, and dock firmware updates intended for Windows 11.

Do not install a generic driver simply because it contains the word “Thunderbolt.” On modern systems, operation also depends on OEM firmware, ACPI tables, Windows’ USB4 connection manager, graphics support, and driver-signing policy.

Step 2: Check the UEFI/BIOS settings

There is no standard BIOS menu path or universal option name for Thunderbolt. If the manufacturer exposes a control, it may be under Advanced, Security, Thunderbolt, USB4, PCIe, or I/O.

  1. In Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart.
  4. Look for a Thunderbolt, USB4, PCIe tunneling, or external-device security setting. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the recommended value.
  5. Save the changes and perform a complete restart.

Firmware must give Windows control of native USB4 support through ACPI _OSC. Microsoft specifies that native USB4 support must be reported to Windows as enabled. Firmware can restrict PCIe tunneling for security or policy reasons, but USB tunneling, DisplayPort tunneling, and interdomain USB4 connections must remain available for the USB4 connection manager to operate correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing these firmware settings requires a full reboot. Hibernate and resume is not an adequate replacement.

Step 3: Connect a compatible device and check the Windows USB4 page

  1. Connect a known-compatible Thunderbolt or USB4 device directly to the computer. For testing, bypass the dock, hub, adapter, or monitor if possible.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB.
  3. Look for USB4 Hubs and Devices.

Microsoft added this page beginning with Windows 11 build 22621.1778, delivered through KB5026446. It lists detected USB4 hubs and devices and their capabilities.

The page appears when Windows detects a USB4 host router. If it is missing, the computer may not be USB4-capable, the firmware may not be exposing the host router, or the host router may be dynamically enumerated only after a compatible device is connected.

Step 4: Check the host router in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories such as System devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Network adapters, depending on the manufacturer’s implementation.
  3. Look for a USB4 or Thunderbolt host-router entry, or an entry with a warning icon.
  4. Right-click a relevant entry, select Properties, and inspect Device status and Events.

When the required firmware capabilities are present, Windows can identify the PCIe-enumerated host router with the hardware ID PCIUSB4_MS_CM. This allows Plug and Play to load the USB4 connection-manager driver. The exact friendly name shown in Device Manager varies by system.

Optional: show the USB4 page on a dynamically enumerated system

Microsoft documents an OEM-recommended registry value for systems that expose the USB4 host router only after a USB4 device is attached. It can make USB4 Hubs and Devices visible even when no USB4 device is currently connected.

This does not create Thunderbolt or USB4 support. Use it only when the computer manufacturer confirms that the system is USB4-capable and uses dynamic host-router enumeration.

Why a dock may charge and transfer data but show no display

USB4 and Thunderbolt docks do not use a single all-or-nothing feature. USB data can work while display output fails.

For USB4 display support, the graphics driver must support WDDM 3.0 or later and the USB4 monitor feature. The platform and driver must also support DisplayPort tunneling. On systems that use USB4 DisplayPort bandwidth-allocation mode, Windows 11 build 22621.1344, delivered by KB5022913, added dynamic DisplayPort tunnel bandwidth allocation support.

If a dock’s USB ports work but its monitors do not, update the graphics driver and dock firmware, test a direct monitor connection, and check whether the computer’s specifications explicitly support display output through that port.

Symptom Likely cause What to try
USB4 Hubs and Devices is absent No USB4 host router was detected, the system is not capable, or the router is dynamically enumerated. Connect a compatible device, update UEFI/BIOS and OEM drivers, and verify the port’s specifications.
The host router appears, but the device is in a failed state Firmware may have disabled required USB, DisplayPort, or interdomain tunneling. Install the manufacturer’s firmware and restore the vendor-recommended Thunderbolt/USB4 security and tunneling settings.
The device disappears after sleep or hibernate Firmware state may not be preserved correctly, or ACPI port-mapping data may be incomplete. Install BIOS and chipset updates, test a full shutdown and restart, and report the issue to the manufacturer if it returns after resume.
USB works but displays do not Missing WDDM 3.0 USB4 monitor support, DisplayPort tunneling, or bandwidth allocation. Update the graphics and dock firmware, test another cable or display, and verify display support for the port.

Use a current driver supplied by the computer, dock, or peripheral manufacturer rather than disabling Windows security features. Microsoft’s driver policy began affecting previously trusted cross-signed drivers by default with the April 2026 security update.

Is Secure Boot required?

Secure Boot is not a universal Thunderbolt-on requirement established by Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance. Windows 11 requires the PC to be Secure Boot-capable and use UEFI firmware; Secure Boot itself does not have to be enabled merely to satisfy that Windows 11 requirement.

Some manufacturers may impose additional security requirements for external PCIe devices. Follow the security policy documented for the specific computer, especially on business-managed systems.

Why is USB4 Hubs and Devices missing from Settings?

Windows shows that page when it detects a USB4 host router. It may be missing because the computer is not USB4-capable, firmware is not exposing the router, Windows is outdated, or the router is dynamically enumerated and no compatible device is connected.

Can a registry change add Thunderbolt support?

No. The IsSystemUsb4CapableFromOem registry value can expose the USB4 settings page on certain OEM systems with dynamically enumerated USB4 hardware. It cannot add a missing controller, firmware support, tunneling capability, or driver.

Does a USB-C port support Thunderbolt?

Not necessarily. USB-C describes the connector shape. Check the exact computer specifications and port markings. Thunderbolt or USB4 support depends on the controller, firmware, and supported protocols.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Thunderbolt or USB4 dock work for USB but not monitors?

Display output has separate requirements, including graphics-driver support for WDDM 3.0 or later and USB4 monitor support, plus DisplayPort tunneling and, on some systems, DisplayPort bandwidth allocation.

Do I need to enable Secure Boot for Thunderbolt?

Not universally. Microsoft distinguishes Windows 11 being Secure Boot-capable from Secure Boot actually being enabled. A computer manufacturer or organization may still require particular security settings for external devices.

The Bottom Line

To enable or troubleshoot Thunderbolt on Windows 11, start with hardware compatibility rather than a hidden Windows toggle. Update the OEM BIOS/UEFI, chipset, graphics, Thunderbolt/USB4, and dock firmware; check the vendor’s firmware security settings; connect a compatible device; and verify Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices. If that page never appears on a supposedly compatible system, the problem is more likely firmware enumeration, ACPI configuration, hardware support, or a blocked driver than a missing Windows switch.
